When he answered that question about the 12th hole I paused the video and out loud said to myself “Wow. That was a perfect answer.” The entire time he was speaking I was thinking to myself: When he retires, I hope he becomes an announcer. What a class act.
I'm a lefty too. My pull goes long, my push goes short. The green is shaped that way. I remember Phil saying that same situation is one of the big reasons he went for his famous shot off of the pine straw on 13. His misses were more likely to be playable. And yes, he'd be great in the booth.
Political questions...?? Really? Shameful, but MASTERFULLY handled by a true Champion. Phil - you're an amazing golfer and an even more amazing human being.
The left wing media wants nothing more than to destroy the Masters like they destroy everything else. If they dislike something, they can't just change the channel or ignore it, they take it upon themselves to find a way to destroy it. I agree, bravo to Phil for taking the high road. I would have ripped that b!+ch a new a$$h0le!
Why would you waste a political question on Phil? You can ask him anything and you waste it. Why would you ask any pro athlete their take on politics. Phil also didnt even no what she was referring to lol
I'm not saying I agree with it or not, but I think the answer to "why" is probably clicks. For better or worse (likely worse), journalism, and by extension journalists, are judged and compensated by clicks. People don't pay for daily paper delivery anymore. You need to get a headline that generates clicks to survive. Politics riles emotion and generates those clicks.
@@thejokeexplainer it’s also why people (with brains) are becoming increasingly disinterested in politics and social issues. As you said it’s mostly brought up to rile people up to generate interest.
@@alexjones7043 I very much agree it's a complete turn off (though smart policy may be more important now because the world is changing faster). The discourse is almost never about a data-driven ways to improve policy. It's usually just emotionally-driven, half-true clickbait. I'm looking forward to tuning it out (even more than usual) and coming together to watch some world class golf on the biggest stage.
I think Phil knew exactly what she was referring to. While she was asking the question his face, to me, said "you're not really asking this, are you?". Phil is no dummy in just about any subject. The guy's a straight up genius.
Perhaps it is just me but it seems like the male reporters are asking relevant questions about Phil and the Masters, while the female reporters are woke and only interested in trying to get Phil to say something that will get him canceled.
isnt he worth like 400m dollars? these people act as if "cancelling" somebody like that is actually going to do anything other than give them clout with their friends that are actually grown up versions of children..
A better reply would be to ask “what’s wrong with Georgia’s election law?” Then when the liberal activist says “black people are too poor to get an ID”, Phil should call the liberal activist a racist for suggesting such a racist conspiracy theory.
Honestly, the PGA and MLB should not really care very much how states decide they want to manage their elections. The problem is, they insist on mixing politics with sports, entertainment and business and it is slowly destroying our culture. The answer should always be "we are in the sports and entertainment business, not politics, so we leave those things to the politicians, ask them."
Same - I’ve noticed sports journalism these days is more revolves around entrapment and getting a juicy line from an athlete rather than asking insightful questions.
The activist who spoke up at 8:00 to ask her question needs to be stripped of her press pass. What a disgrace. "Is your sport doing enough to combat this law?" is the most egregiously biased and ridiculous question I have heard of an athlete in a long time. Activists like that posing as reporters, and the companies that hire them, bring shame onto the media profession, and the shame is very well deserved.
@@tony.bickert The issue wasn't that it was a "tough" question, but a completely biased question which relied a highly questionable premises. The best way to respond would be to take issue with the premises, but doing that would get into all sorts of political issues at a golf press conference. Let's just stop beating around the bush and call out reporter bias.
@@phidip2328 Georgia is in the news due to racism. Augusta National has a history of racism. It's a Masters press conference. It's a fair, unbiased question from the press. Unpleasant to you but that's a you thing. No free passes. Sorry. Deal with it. When you need the tough questions to be asked in your world by the press I will stand up for you too.
@@tony.bickert Tony, Georgia is not in the news because of "racism". It is in the news because leftists have advanced a highly partisan and suspect narrative in regard to stronger voting laws. The reporter's question buys into that highly suspect and partisan narrative and presumes others agree. Because the question is so loaded with opinion based on a particular partisan worldview, it is a partisan question and has no place at a news conference, much less a news conference about golf.
If anyone deserves the career Grand Slam, it has to be Phil. He’s been unlucky and made some dodgy decisions in the US Open, I just hope that he can somehow find a way to win the missing major of his fantastic, hall of fame career! Augusta National Golf Club should kick Christine Brennan out of the press room permanently, for always asking political questions.
By Golly I sure Respect and Admire Phil Mickelson for his candor, sense of humor and strait forward answers. P.S. he sure can hit that pill around the pasture too.
Phil’s unwavering belief that he would eventually win the masters is what establishes him as really a great player of all time especially doing it 3 times. Has he got a 4th one in him? Maybe. He knows how to do it. But maybe he’d prefer a US open. And so would everyone else. They’d love to see him win it. He would have the career grand slam. Only 5 people have it. You’d be number 6 Phil. It’s not impossible. He deserves it. I’d take that bet.
If I were Phil, upon getting the “voting law” question, I think I would have stood up, thanked everyone for their support and questions, and walked off the stage.
Phil handled it the way it should have been handled. He is a guest in the premier golf venue in the world. As much as we would all like to see it done the way you suggest, handling it with class is the “Masters” way to handle it. In reality, there is too much at stake to handle it any differently at any tour stop. Yes, the golf is the entertainment, but the benefit to charity in the local community is monumental. It is wise not to turn over the apple cart when the benefit to every community that has a tournament is so huge.
Touche! And by the way, here in Florida they will often give away free sandbags during potential hurricanes. And guess what...you need an ID to get one.
She's been asking political questions to everyone. Asked that same question to multiple players. She needs to be kicked out and never be allowed back in there
She’s not a journalist/ she’s an activist. It would be fantastic for someone to push back on both her making it political but also the specifics of why it needs to be pushed back on. Easiest to just give her canned answers and not feed her tho i guess
There oughta be a law against the free press! They want to cancel white racists! Patriots against democracy. Lets get em. Wait, scratch that. Geez, I was almost indoctrinated. The mob of 116 likes almost got me to march with them to the clubhouse with flag pole clubs and buffalo hats.
Imagine having the opportunity to ask Phil Mickelson about Augusta National and you decide to ask him not one but two political questions instead. What a waste of everyone’s time.
There's always one who pushes the political / social question. He's a golfer and the Masters is a golf tournament, can we please have ONE thing in this country that is about the game and expect nothing else? I'm begging.
The fact that so many people want an event to be about the excitement of a sport rather than politics is like putting a gigantic target on it for the Woke mob to attack. The woke movement is toxic, and they don't really care who they drag down.
It is always feelings with women. Why do you think most married men don't do sports with their wife. Do you think women want men around talking about "feelings". 😂
Some just can't leave politics out of sports. The report or who ask the question on Georgia voting law should read it! I pray the PGA doesn't fall in the trap of trying to appease the socialist left idiocy. It will surely ruin the game has it has other pro sports.
It’s because they don’t really care about the sport. They’re only here because we are. And they don’t have any ability or personality to start something for themselves.
When I started my career 29 years ago as a funeral director, my boss told me never do two things; you don’t talk religion and you don’t talk politics. So simple yet so perfect. Love Phil.... he’s smart!
Such a legend. I noticed Phil's putting took a hit when he started wearing those sunnies. Tho they do look cool, id be intrigued to know if his putting comes back when he drops them or not. At least for my peace of mind alone.. ; )
Yeah...AND she, like all reporters asked her question with insinuations based on her own narrative. Smh. Screw MLB already..but i hope enough people get serious about boycotting coke & every coke product ..to hurt them.
In Australia if you absentee vote at a polling booth not in your district you have to provide ID, and always have. It just keeps people honest. Its really not a big deal.
It isn’t. It’s liberal lies and disingenuous behavior. When asked to be specific about something in the bill, they refuse. They know the bill has nothing discriminatory in it. But they insist on referring to the bill as a whole as if it somehow contains some thing untoward or racist. Yet it doesn’t because they never answer the question when asked to be specific.
Well by my knowledge the bill is loaded with things like reducing ballot dropboxes, extending voting lines by assigning specific voting places, banning mail in voting and ID is a small part of the bill. Unfortunately that will make voting more difficult, and is an attempt to solve the fake voter fraud issues that were really never there.
@@someoneonyoutube7918 Well, I got news for you. It provides longer early voting in rural counties, increased drop boxes in rural counties, resources to combat excessively long polling lines, it provides added security with ID and drop box locations during early voting. The only people that could complain are Democrats that want to steal another election. For anyone else, this affords plenty of voting options with the most transparent and reliable results.
@@Labelup01 Oh Gawd, is that who it was? Figures. She's a major PITA, and a mediocre writer too. And it's because she's mediocre that she always has to play the race and gender angles, so she can appear "edgy."
13:35 - what a perfect answer. Thank you Phil for not catering to the WOKE MOB - That reporter that asked that question needs to be fired.... Stop bringing politics into sports!
Someone please ban the female reporter trying to set this man up with these ridiculous political questions that have absolutely nothing to do with The Masters or golf. I’m glad he said what he said!
Why is it that the three female journalists asked questions not related to golf or the masters tournament? If this is their only angle, maybe they should be removed from the press gallery. Don’t get me wrong. I am all for equality, inclusiveness etc. but really. 🤔
Sports organizations, businesses, and entertainers should not be trying to "combat the new Georgia voter law", Georgia has decided they want to manage their elections a certain way, that is their business. This is a golf tournament and nothing more. People need perspective, this politicizing of everything will be our destruction.
You have a three time Masters champion who is very articulate and prepared to talk about the tradition of the tournament, his personal triumphs, the nuances of the course, and you have a couple of journalists trying to score political points.....disgusting.
As of April 2022 - the things Phil says in this interview are all contradicted by his turncoat events of this year. Phil was banned this year by the Masters - let's see how long his banishment lasts.
@@tomreed153I just looked up menu and main course is Filet Mignon and meso-saultae bass, with mashed potatoes and spring veggies. House or Caesar salad. Why did they just mention the appetizer? Don't know but pigs in a blanket is mini hotdogs in pastry.
You all talk about not being political but look at all these comments, politics rule and the new law in Georgia is truly draconian. I even see some really awesome racist and sexist comments in here and probably a couple of capitol stormers. I wish I didn't love a game that attracts some many douchebags.
Everyone in the comments trying to cancel the reporters who asked questions they didn't want to hear. Gotta have a little thicker skin than that. A couple questions ain't gonna kill anybody.
That's fine if she wants to ask any question she wants - it's her time slot - she can ask Phil as to what color his underwear is... no one cares. But when she presents her question in the dishonest way that she did (in painting the new GA voting law as a bad law that needs to be combatted & that it is bad for minority voters/diversity/inclusion), she ABSOLUTELY deserves to be called out on it. Plain & simple. *But... by calling her out, I guess some folks (it's only just a few, trust me on this) will be offended. It sounds like YOU need some thicker skin... because you are definitely an offended & triggered dude. You are DEFINITELY triggered when you lie about everyone trying to 'cancel' that reporter.*
Sorry Phil some liberal nobody had to ask about politics, she set up and should be removed from the media here at this special place. We don't do politics at golf tournaments, what an embarrassment!
