Phil Smith played this live telecast of the Haydn Trumpet Concerto in 1989. He has now played with the orchestra nearly 30 years and still makes it look as easy as he does here. Certainly one of the most dependable and inspiring performers there is, in one of the most exposed and demanding jobs of all.

Smith's cadenza shows how much of a monster he is on that trumpet. He ends with a high Eb arpeggio followed by an F-G trill. An absolute beast.

He didn't "get" the high note, he played the high note masterfully! Lol. He is such a great player!

Dustin Williams I agree. Too many players attempt this piece having not fully developed their abilities beyond what is required technically to play it. Those that do develop beyond what's required are therefore able to perform it musically!!!

I know it's Phil Smith and all, but isn't it stylistically correct to start on the top note of the trill, for Haydn?

I've always heard that applies to baroque music only, not classical or later. Of course if someone didn't follow that rule, I don't think it would be a major crime. Performers should always be allowed a certain amount of interpretively leeway.

Technically yes, and you can hear how he does that as his norm a lot, but sometimes when he wants the phrase to connect a bit more, he starts from the bottom note. You can hear Herseth do that, too, in his recording.

No, it is appropriate to start a trill in the direction contrary to the line of the phrase. If the chord tone is coming from above, below is the appropriate direction.

Wow. There is no improvement on that performance. Tone = perfect. Range= perfect Style= perfect. Cadenza= amazing. If there is a better performance than this I don’t believe it. And for god sake don’t say Wynton cause his is not this perfect. His cadenza is no where as difficult as this one. And he nailed it.
