Philadelphia Orchestra Performs "La Marseillaise" 

People can talk cynical politics all they want but there is a cemetery in Philadelphia where French men are buried who lost their lives helping Americans gain freedom just as there are cemeteries in France with American men who did the same. People need to acknowledge the essential.

I congratulate those members of the audience who stood up. It’s the correct thing to do!

The real hero is the guy on the left who stood up first, without knowing if anyone was standing up behind him. Chapeau!!

Remember, the French helped us gain independence 🇫🇷🇺🇸

I raise thumbs up for the French standing up while performing 'La Marseillaise'.

I had been in Paris only a fortnight before: a colleague at the Collège de France had organized a week-long conference in honor of the anniversary of a book I had written. It was glorious fall weather, and I stayed on the Left Bank, a short walk from the Shakespeare & Co. bookshop. Two weeks after my return, Islamist terrorists carried out massacres in the City of Light. France survived, thank God. But I did not. American academia was already in the grip of ideological witch hunts and my university had begun an inquisition against me, pressuring my students to write denunciations, demanding they report in secret on things I said in my lectures. I chose to retire, with right on my side, rather than fight alone against a giant, rich institution of fascism as bad in its way as ISIS or Al Qaeda. La Marseillaise for nearly two and a half centuries has been the clarion call to justice for the oppressed of the world. I've no hope for my own life. But I do hope the downfall and destruction of this system will come, and Americans may live in genuine liberty, equality, and fraternity.

I love my Orchestra and the Philadelphians who stood for the French National Anthem. You guys made me proud! We are so lucky to have these wonderful musicians & conductors and we have for over 100 years.

Honestly, this is one the best renditions I've ever heard of our national anthem. Perfect balance between symphonic orchestration (with strings) and a military fanfare sound. Just perfect.

To see Americans playing our national anthem in public and making a standing ovation is a strong symbolic gesture. As a Frenchman, I am touched. This compensates for the Frenchbashing of the Bush years.

Il est spécial d'entendre La Marseillaise joué par un orchestre américain et de constater que tant les musiciens que les spectateurs se lèvent respectueusement pour écouter et attendent la fin de l'hymne pour applaudir généreusement. L'orchestration est excellente et la répartition entre les cordes, les bois et les cuivres font en sorte qu'il s'agit d'une très belle version.

C'est probablement l'une des plus belles interprétations de l'Hymen National Français que j'ai pu entendre, la rareté étant liée au tempo orchestré peu souvent utilisé. C'est aussi, pour moi, ce qui adoucit mon cœur parce que c'est l'Orchestre Philarmonique de Philadelphie qui l'interprète, debout, mais également parce que le public, probablement à très forte majorité américain, se lève (probablement avec la main sur le coeur). Je suis très touché et très ému de voir et écouter mon hymne dans ce contexte et en ces temps troublés. J'en ai les poils tous dressés, comme à l'affût.... Merci aux musiciens, au chef d'orchestre, au public ainsi qu'à la municipalité de Philadelphie d'avoir pu me permettre cette si belle, douce et puissante émotion.

When I was about 8, my piano teacher (also the organist at our church) invited me to sit down at the massive pipe organ console in our church and play something. This is what I chose. One of the most emotional national anthems ever written.
