i see a scene like this and i get so GD mad at PSH! really? you had to gamble with your life cause you thought maybe you weren't rare enough or special enough? well, you were! and now we get to watch hacks kill an entire industry with their mediocrity. GD it!
My voicemail is "AT THE SOUND OF THE TONE, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN.....BEEEPPP"...MY OTHER ONE ON THE HOME PHONE "ITS A BEAUTIFUL DAY, SO DON'T BE AN ASSHOLE & FUCK IT UP"
"Yeah, I don't know who the fuck this guy is". First off, that was hilarious. Second, that was a genius bit of dialogue. Intelligence officers *hate* speaking their mind unless they know *precisely* who their audience is. Hoffman conveyed that exact sentiment with the simple declaration that he disapproved of the presence of a completely innocuous third party; a third party whose presence wouldn't have been necessary but for the window *he* broke.
I always had a soft spot in my heart, for Philip Seymour Hoffman. This scene and his work in "Twister" is why he will always be one of my favorite actors. May he always rest in peace.
This man, in my humble opinion, was the greatest actor of his generation. PSH gave everything to his performance. He could go method without going to extremes to prep for a role. What a talent.
@N Allen I am guessing he spoke for everyone who has been pissed on... He has the Brass Balls to back it up.. so he is their Hero , and has immunity .. which he clearly spelled out .. LMAO
I love all the people in the background. They aren't even being coy about what's happening in the office. All just shamelessly watching the scene play out in the boss's office lol
I keep revising this up in my mind. This might be one of the greatest scenes in movie history. If only this film had been told from his perspective, it could've been an all time classic.
For some reason the body language, slight typewriter tap, and soft thank you at 2:57 makes that last little interaction a lot warmer than one might expect lol
The amusing moment is when all the office interaction and conversations going on behind Gust come to a gradual stop and they turn quietly into his cheering party.
Love the Thumbs up from the office worker at the end, highlighted how the real Gust Avrakotos allegedly had a network of admin workers at Langley who he helped out regularly and they would feed him information to help him keep his job.
The best part about this amazing scene, is that we get to live vicariously through Gus. There are times I wish I could do that to my boss and then walk away with near impunity.
My career as a spy is not based on what i know, what I think, how I act, but what dirt I can dig up on my "superiors". Now you know how a low level spy in Russia became president, and could get a US president to do what ever he asked...
Watching this again (or any of PSH films for that matter) affects me in a way like no other. I am truly hurt by his untimely passing way before we ever got to see the pinnacle of his career. His command of the screen was intoxicating
This is what I call true Acting at its best!! Those background extras are just in awe of his performance in this scene for sure!! You are truly missed Philip Seymour Hoffman!!
Thank God for the Late Philip Seymour and the skills he had as an Actor. I also want to thank the men and women in the CIA, FBI, NSA and DOJ. That are trying to protect each and every good American. Thank You and God Speed.
I have had the wonderful, ecstatic and heart pounding joy to say similar things to a small number of unethical bosses in my life. I learned that self employment was my only real option. In the end I found customers that love me as I am. Find what works for you, unmercifully if necessary!
