Over the years, I have flown A340s of Cathay, Emirates and Lufthansa. They are slower than Boeings. However, I find them (and other Airbuses) generally quieter. Their latest A350 is a prime example. Yes, fly them whilst you can before they get retired by airlines!
I love how the outer engine seemed to disappear as you entered some clouds. The A340 was never my favorite but I flew on it several times and I think it’s definitely about time PAL retires this aircraft. I’ll miss flying on a plane with 4 engines though..
The perception of a long slow takeoff is probably not subjective. Airliners can use what's called "flex takeoff power". If the temperature-density equation allows and the plane is light (maybe because it's a short-haul and fuel load is low), the plane doesn't require full takeoff thrust to get airborne in the given runway length. Hence...
the clicking is normal ... the wind is blowing the fan blades it set to do that do it wont damage it... every time you see it windy you will here that :) I am becoming your biggest fan!!! keep up the good work!!!
I also flew on the main cabin of the PAL A340 to HKG last Nov. 2017. Service is good and plane is well maintained although they ran out of my preferred meal choice and the plane itself was showing signs of age already. And yes, Airbus planes seem quieter than Boeing (no offense though).
A340 hairdryer sounds like a busted ref or aircon at takeoff... sad though one by one they go. Any ways still have a few years until for PAL to enjoy though.
