This is only 30 years old, but what a difference the game was played then to how it is now. Ben Rivera threw 131 pitches, something you would never see now. The game was played at a much crisper pace, the pitchers got the ball back from the catcher, and made the pitch without walking around the mound, etc. I watched it again, because I went to this game in Chicago.
Well said! And guys didn’t get paid nearly what they get paid today. Big reason why the game is ruined today. Guys don’t have to play nearly as hard to earn that paycheck. I miss yesteryear hate to say
Yet the HBO series "When It Was a Game" came out a few years before this contest here, and people bemoaned the greed of the players in the free agent era in the early 1990s, saying things such as the players of these days don't have to play nearly as hard as back in the 1950s to earn their paycheck. One tradition of baseball passed down from one generation of fans to another: fans of a certain age grow older eventually to adopt the attitude that the game of "today" is ruined by greedy players who aren't as tough as the ones who came before. Shit, people probably said the players of Cap Anson's age played more for the money than players did of Old Hoss Radbourne's era, that's how long this has been going on. Then again, we're the ones who have collected old games and are uploading them to RU-vid. Make no mistake -- we ADORE the players of today such as Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, Fernando Tatis Jr., Tim Anderson, Jacob DeGrom, Kershaw, Nolan Arenado, Ozzie Albies, Mookie Betts, who play with such heart and enthusiasm and swag. We are firm in the belief 20 to 30 years from now there will be fans who will claim "players today don't play the game like they did in the 2020s."
Sosa sucked ! Never knew what base to throw it to, but knew where every camera was! Run to the outfield with American flags , but miss the cut- off man and threw it into the 3rd base dougout! A total me player ! Buchele was a very excellent triple A 3rd baseman . Lefervbe was 162 -162 in 2 years with a VERY Mediocre team! He did his best, many worse managers ! Sandberg, Grace and Sosa , weren't going to get it done . Harry said it all. You need to spend some money!!
