This is a beautiful pavane by Peter Phillips (c.1560-1628). Peter Phillips was known for his virtuosity at the keyboard and for his beautiful compositions. Several of his works were set for lute. This is a chimera of multiple sources but is very close to that found in Dd.211b.

I think you will like it! It is quite idiomatic but had some unique moments : )

Thank you for this fresh understanding of Peter Phillips' best known piece. I've always conceived of it in its keyboard version(s), not least that by Sweelinck. But the rendition in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book also reveals a subtly different side. However, the lute, because of how its different registers expose the voices, lets us understand this great pavane in a whole new light. Thanks, Laudon, let's have more of these revelations.

Thank you, James. Whenever I play a piece that was originally written for another instrument, I do try to bring out the strengths of the lute instead of just trying to imitate the other instrument. I think the results tend to be better and fresher. I've also noticed that there is a tendency for everyone to place ornaments in the same place and to use the same ornaments. I try to vary those a bit and in some cases, just remove them as I tend to prefer light ornamentation anyways. It can be fun to put a fall where someone is expecting a shake from all the recordings they have heard! : ) Cheers, Laudon
