Its also good to see this style being taught. over time boxing has deteriorated as too many gyms are teaching offense only and no defense. the defensive mode in the video shows that every time the fighter blocks a punch with one hand, the other hand is available to counter. this style also makes the fighter a 4 dimensional fighter and with the right footwork you dont have to run anywhere as you have the right defense in place with stable feet and can counter any punch coming.

@blaquemark83 from what i'm seeing on video...the left hand is down to protect the tummy area - that's the concept of "shell" defense; you can't protect everything but you can sacrifice portions of your body to protect the rest (e.g. the shoulder roll).

I agree to let them be them to a point, if they dont apply defense by nature, then you have to teach it and instill it in them by constant repetition, any fighter can be taught to apply new techniques using the principle of 10,000 repetitions = hardwired synaptic muscle memory, so the action or technique when stimulated by an attack (Right hand, jab, etc,) it becomes a reflex action by way of a defense and counter maneuver. Progressive, practical scientific training is key to advancing any style

i like how u stay professional against those who havent adapted to new "working" boxing techniques. continue to be humble and let the haters do their job. i love ur vids and will buy some. i have trouble finding trainers because most are "ole school", meaning they are on the traditional teaching. Ive studied the shoulder roll and have been using it for some years and have been VERY successful with it. i wish that i could find a trainer who knows this in my area. hopefully one day u can train me

Coach Rick, thanks for focusing on the technical aspect of mitt work. It is very important for the boxer to why we want them to do things a certain way. Digging the tutorials.,they are excellent

the title is self explanatory, Unique Mayweather Style. Floyd was taught this since he was a baby, it really works for him, alot of people try to learn it, but all they are learning is the pattern, not the style. trust me i know i live in Vegas, i go to floyds gym, and i know all the Mayweathers, Big floyd, roger and jeff. all teach it different but Big floyd created it.

@billysue2 Billy, you're right this is not a beginner technique. For the purpose of demonstrating, it's not crucial for him to step in tight and throw his right cross. At range this is how the punch would miss or glance your shoulder. He is actually throwing at her face. However she's combining the shoulder roll with a slight lean to make the angle that much difficult to get hit. Yes, these are videos for advanced fighters. The woman in this video is clearly not a beginner/ slow.

The moniker "The Philly Shell" was created by the "Fight Night" video game series in it's 3rd installment (2006). It can be dangerous to teach this defense (even though it can still be successfull) because it has to come natural to the fighter. When creating a fighter, you have to let them be them, and advance their style as much as possible. Otherwise you could be hindering them from being at the top. Thanks.

@dustintml If you have never done this type of mittwork you would need The series which is Vol. 1 and 2 (Basic & Advanced),, the Special Edition has a number of specialized techniques used by Floyd Jr and Roger while he was training for the Marquez come back fight... Thanks,, Coach Rick

in amatuer boxing the simple gaurd is the best all you have to do is protect the face you can take loads of punches if your hands are tight it dousnt score and because they cant get through your guard they will get frustrated and make mistakes Capitalize

@phatblackgurl619 In boxing, there are different guard position one can utilize (shell/classic guard etc., this is the shell). She is being taught to defend herself using her shoulders. Additionally, cross guards, slips and other evasive techniques can be effective out of this posture. There is no false confidence. It's a different style and technique. Use the technique suitable to you and your specific strengths. If you have slow reflexes, I'd encourage keeping both hands up (traditional guard)

Keeping the hand down is bad for those who do not have the athletic skill to pull it off. Its not for everyone, but its a valid skill to learn. jabs come from underneath the eyesight and you can draw your opponent in.

keep breakin it down like in this video. we need to understand the theories or purposes for each move, u are pretty damn smart for understanding the reasons why. i think its cool how you give credit to the mayweathers, keep producing winners, peace.
@contec
@contec 12 лет назад
i also disagree with blaquemark83 - the video shows the ultimate defensive mode. The left is kept to the body to protect the body and also to fire jabs from down low as it is harder for the opponent to see the jab coming. this defensive style in counterpunching mode would would pre-empt any left hook loop or straight right and because the body twists from the waist as an axis to slip the opponents punch any fighter who would come in strong could get countered in a split second.

First off, thanks for your great videos. Second, as you base this on Mayweather's style and it is alleged that Mayweather has problems with southpaws can you demonstrate to us a successful adaptation of the shell defense to a southpaw? Floyd's catch-roll-block is brilliant against a 1-2-3 combination from a conventional fighter but of course with a southpaw it's all different angles. Keep up the good work!
@JAMESRICKYCOWARD
@JAMESRICKYCOWARD 13 лет назад
@blaquemark83 Thanks for your comment, but thats a subjective statement, some of the Best fighters in the world and in history have fought with the left hand down. Its a skill that I teach to those who have the ability to learn it, she does and continues to win bouts because of this style of boxing. The Great Sugar Ray Robinson and the Great Archie Moore used the low left hand Pull roll bend technique as well as James Toney and of Course Floyd Mayweather Jr., I teach it and it works,, Thanks

@NextTime4U I sir have a drifiting hand also and use this it makes your opponent misjudge the distance between you an him because the fact your lead hand isnt as visible and at BLAQUEMARK83 if your chin is down as it should be and tucked into your lead shoulder you have nothing to worry about also moving your head helps if your playing rock and sockem with your opponent this wont work but if you move and use head movement and angles it does good video NextTime4U

or maybe to grab your opponent? It seems like a counter from this hand position wouldn't have much power behind it, but obviously the style can be effective so what is the benefit?

@Meelodin I was thinking the same thing. These cats probably never even laced up a pair and got in there. Being in there live vs watching from outside is two different things. I can do way more out the shell and shots roll smoother. This is a style..not the gospel folks. Somebody that has mastered a "style" is way more dangerous than a person following the mass of majority method/thinking out of a book and has not mastered anything other than keeping up their left hand. LOL

@NextTime4U I have a question bout the low left hand. I can see the defensive benefit of keeping it low to help protect the body as long as you can protect the chin by rolling. But is there an offensive benefit to the hand position such as having it in a better position to counter with a hook or jab? Thank you

coach rick: i practise the pull alot, but it happends often where i wake up the next day and my lower back is hurting. any suggestions? i recently started pulling back on the inside of the jab, instead of straight back, and i take a small step back with my back foot, it helps a bit.

Rick, keeping the left hand down is a bad skill to teach a fighter. A fighter should always be in position to fight back. The best defense is to not be there for the punch... If her opponent was to loop the left-hook to the shoulder or step in strong with a straight right the fight will surely be over.

Carl Froch ended the Groves rematch fight like this as Groves turned and put up his rear cover hand to block the hook Froch followed up with the back hand as he was square, if you see now this defensive technique is taught a lil different as you don't turn and square up as much as taught here when defending the lead hook, so yes you are correct infact I was scanning to see who else noticed this
