If this helps anyone, philo throws ~60-63mph on power drives in a round. Not Anthony barela speed but still impressive at his age. With good form like his one can definitely throw 400+ for a long time

I think Philo can pump them out 420-450 on a good day.

Philo, man what a great teacher and such a important part of the game. I really do look at him as one of the best teacher in the game. He has such a great approach at showing you what needs to be done and how to get there. Love it.

Omaha was lucky enough to have Philo show up at our weekly doubles league last night. He showed up a bit early to play a few holes and I got to play the last five holes with him before league. He was more than happy to share feedback with us on what we could improve upon and compliment us when we had a good shot. He's the only touring pro I've met but he was so incredibly humble, relaxed and approachable that he's definitely one of my favorite professionals now. What a great human being he is.

When I started disc golf, I tried to emulate Philo's form, because he throws so flat, although not the farthest, but for us mortals that 150 meters is off limits, so control was the key. Thank you for this!

Always loved Philos intellectual take on the game he is a smart disc golfer and that’s what has made him so great. He’s very thoughtful and you can tell he has found his game through experimentation and feel. Before this game somehow morphed into throwing 600’ in wide open ball golf courses players like this dominated and still do when things get technical
@HaikesXO
@HaikesXO 2 года назад
Because anyone can throw a 275’ woods line. Depends on the day and little bit of luck. Most can never throw 600-700 ft shots so that’s where, imo, skill and form really come into play.

I’m so happy for you guys getting these opportunities to get inside the mind of these pros. I love how passionate Philo is about the game and how he likes to teach. The one detail that I took from this that I just discovered recently was not putting the disc tight against my hand. By leaving a little space and just using my fingertips, I was able to generate so much more spin. Thank you very much for asking how these pros grip the disc for different shots, I feel like it’s helped me out a lot. I’m also loving the slow mo putting footage! Great stuff once again, raising the bar for disc golf instruction!

Whenever I need a refresher, this is my video. Back to basics. I spent an afternoon throwing mindlessly max speed, littering the course and doing video of my throws at 4k 60fps. I was horrified when I watched it back. So, back to the soothing tones of Philo to make it all ok again. Tomorrow is another day.

It is truly a blessing your able to capture such a legend in the sport and document that visual knowledge to share with everyone! I’ve been getting nostalgic at the old philo group tutorial videos so seeing him steady do his thing slinging the roc and being philo still to this day is truly iconic! You truly did the disc community justice to capture a legend on film! Thanks man keep up the phenomenal work!

That's so cool seeing it in slow motion. I can see so many flaws that I need to correct. Right now, I am just trying to standstill and get my timing down. It's so clear from the video why he gets so much distance. I just recently realized that I was shifting my weight too soon, killing so much power. I still don't pull the disc in enough. I am starting to realize that it's really more about rotating your body than actually throwing in the disc. I definitely am very flat footed too.
@justthefacts4965

That grip makes so much sense. I think Michael Johansen talks about doing the same kind of grip. Thumb pad off disc, further out in fingers, more spin.

I really wish we had all the angle of Philo's form filmed that you had for Simon and Drew (overhead and from behind) in addition to what is displayed here. I am sure there are little nuances worth studying form those perspective that we are missing out on here. Regardless, an amazing video that I really appreciate. 4.5/5 stars on this one. I initially modeled my game and bag after Philo because of how he likes to keep things simple.

Some pros seem to have a deep flight plate thumb grip (thumb is closer to center of disc than "normal". Normal = along edge of inside rim where rim meets flight plate.) More of their palm/base of their thumb is on the top of the disc. Personally I use a three finger for a more nose down throw, which takes more palm off of the disc, but It has been hurting my middle finger quite a bit. If I'm going to switch back to 4 finger, I want to hear the comment sections tips and preferences. I also think its interesting that Andrew Marweede can throw a 500ft+ forhand with a one finger grip, while sexton has a finger tip claw like grip, and eagle has a stacked 2 finger (my preference). I know everyone is different. I want to hear everyone's thoughts on grip, backhand and forhand. What works for you? Maybe it could help someone else in the comments, I know it always helps me.

ive got a question, what parts of your arm stays loose and for how long( wrist, elbow, shoulderjoint). is your entire arm loose untill the powerpocket and then you explode and try to use every muscle you got to power the disc? its really hard to see in videos what they do when it comes to looseness, whats forced and whats natural/automatic
@OverthrowDiscGolf
@OverthrowDiscGolf 2 года назад
I don’t think there is a part of the throw where you actively try to use every muscle. Everything is as loose as possible and then you accelerate as smoothly as possible. Don’t think throw it hard. Throw it fast instead. How does your arm move most quickly? If you were to try to whip your fingers as quickly as possible how would that feel?
@justthefacts4965
@justthefacts4965 2 года назад
THIS IS NOT A CRITICISM, I love Philo, it's an honest question: Can you guys explain the fact that Philo's driving form doesn't have a point in the reachback where the disc stays in place and he rotates around it, as is commonly taught? Eg. 7:48. I always wondered how important that really is.
@OverthrowDiscGolf
@OverthrowDiscGolf 2 года назад
The disc stays in place because the shoulders coil back at the same rate the body moves forward. Disc staying in place is a good indicator of that in most cases. It is a swing though so the disc doesn’t HAVE to stay in place. He gets the disc back via shoulder coil like other pros. P.S. Even if it was a criticism that would have been okay. I won’t take your head off over a disagreement

Question. So his driver grip... his index finger isnt curled around the rim. How is he getting spin on the disc? There seems to be no pinch point, pivot point. In your Overthrow grip video you say that the "pinch" point is the most important part.
@OverthrowDiscGolf
@OverthrowDiscGolf 2 года назад
Yeah, that was super interesting to see and we commented on it with him in person. This is the old “fork grip” that guys used earlier in the sport when DX was the only thing on market. He will generate spin with his wrist a bit more like you do with fan grip on approach shots. This is a grip that would make the shot waaaay more accurate in a point and shoot kinda way. If you have a pivot point you’ll get more spin but harder to control. Check out our front vs mid loaded grip video for more info.
