Philosopher David Chalmers breaks down the philosophy behind the depiction of simulations as seen in movies and TV shows, including 'The Matrix', 'Inception', 'The Truman Show' and 'Atlanta'. His new book Reality+ is out now: amzn.to/3AJ3Pk7
In the coming decades, the technology that enables virtual and augmented reality will improve beyond recognition. Within a century, world-renowned philosopher David J. Chalmers predicts, we will have virtual worlds that are impossible to distinguish from non-virtual worlds. But is virtual reality just escapism?
In a highly original work of 'technophilosophy', Chalmers argues categorically, no: virtual reality is genuine reality. Virtual worlds are not second-class worlds. We can live a meaningful life in virtual reality - and increasingly, we will.
What is reality, anyway? How can we lead a good life? Is there a god? How do we know there's an external world - and how do we know we're not living in a computer simulation? In Reality+, Chalmers conducts a grand tour of philosophy, using cutting-edge technology to provide invigorating new answers to age-old questions.
Drawing on examples from pop culture, literature and film that help bring philosophical issues to life, Reality+ is a mind-bending journey through virtual worlds, illuminating the nature of reality and our place within it.

Chuang Tzu was a philosopher in ancient China, who, one night went to sleep and dreamed that he was a butterfly. He dreamt that he was flying around from flower to flower and while he was dreaming he felt free, blown about by the breeze hither and thither. He was quite sure that he was a butterfly. The Zhuangzi is a compilation of his and others' writings at the pinnacle of the philosophically subtle Classical period in China (5th-3rd century BC).

Zhuang Tzu or Zhuangzi are both fine to mention the same person. Combined -zi with the last name is a common way to mention those early days Chinese thinkers respectfully. For example, Confucius usually be mentioned as Kongzi in Chinese. Kong is his last name, and zi is to show the respect.

LOVED THIS!!! I was looking for a clip of The Good Place this whole time haha but given the theme of this video I can see why it wasn’t included. However it would be amazing to see it involved in a video! Either reaction on their interpretation of moral philosophy, or even a book review if the extensive reading list featured on the show! It’s honestly my favorite show of all time, through & through its phenomenal. It got me to love philosophy, made it easy to understand & it was comedic. Very good show. I’d definitely recommend it to someone who finds it difficult to dive into philosophy. I’d also like to know if anyone could find any fake books within the show-either mentioned or in the background!

Thank you David for a charming analysis! He is one of my favourite contemporary philosphers. Although I would have liked him to include here in addition one more gem of a mini-series: Devs, which also explores philosophical questions and plays with the idea of a physical multiverse and (quantum) computer simulated/constructed universe in one package. Naturally these ideas are also explored in many other Sci-Fi shows, such as Star Trek and Stargate franchises throughout the seasons in one way or the other. And of course you don't necessarily need the Western Tech/Sci-Fi setting (as pointed out also by Mr. Chalmers and some commentators of this video) to discuss these ideas as they are found in different forms in different cultures, religions and philosophies as well.

3:05 Baudrillard‘s concept of 'Desert of the Real' relates to hyper-reality - the idea that reality has run away with the spoon (as it were) as, for us, reality as we perceive it is based in images that have built and built on top of each other, creating a self-referencing "simulacra" or copy without origins in reality. It ties back to Guy Debord‘s pioneering concept of a "Society of the Spectacle" which is a book you should read NOW.

We haven't evolved the sensory mechanisms necessary to perceive anything other than the physical reality around us because our survival as a species never depended on it - and as we are the most highly developed species on our planet, it's unlikely that any other animal would have this ability either. In a few thousand years, as technology and development will completely change our evolutionary path, these questions will increasingly occupy our existence, and we may see a certain number of more highly evolved brains that may be able to empirically quantify the existence of what reality truly is, whether a simulation, multiverse or some other thing. This is such a fascinating topic and one that those of us alive today will never find the answers to.

You miss the point. You have never known any other reality but the one you were born into so how can you have any perspective? Remember the line: "Why are my eyes sore?" "Because you‘ve never used them before". The only way you can gain any perspective is by negating everything you *believe* to be truth and go from there.

Why is it statistically probable that we are simulated? Why does he say it's probable so many simulations would occur?
@johnnyzakka

In order for a simulation to be indistinguishable from reality we'd need immense processing power in computers. Something which we do not currently have. So I actually disagree with the odds he mentioned. Because we're either in the first (original) reality or the last iteration of that chain of simulations. So really, our odds are 50% that it's all real :)

For me, Alfred North Whitehead clarified reality a hundred years ago by defining what is actual in "Process and Reality" (1929). For the deluded, god-belief is quite real to them, but given that there are no gods, gods are not actual.

This raises the possibility that there be a parent-to-child relationship to a previous time slice of myself. This self could be simulated through the tested method of a classic biography. So through fine-grained technology could transfer the self as a more complete resemblance of a sequence of selves. However, this seems to lack a sense of authentic legitimacy. An analogy is how an authoritarian political leader lacks authenticity. Functionally the authoritarian claims to be in control but lacks legitimacy even though people claim '"life is good". Real simulations appear to grey-mirror this political science analogy.

This issue has been discussed more than a thousand years ago in both India and China. But hey!, it wasn't discussed by white men! OK, Chalmers is a nice guy and so no doubt was Descartes. But does the West have to continue to be so narcissistic? Here is queen Madalasa in the Fifth century in India. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uDd3iupKUyI.html
