The reference is too old now. Millennials might be old enough to know where the reference is from, but even then, not many millennials know Monty python. Gen I and Zoomers wouldn’t have a clue about Monty python.

In today's social media climate where it seems like people have to be force fed things to talk about on twitter I can see this being a legitimate business. Like consulting on things to talk about on twitter to make yourself look more interesting and like you have observations worth contributing to the world.

The reason some people dont find this funny is because, i think, many people dont have an emotional capacity to understand something thats so funny, but also so sad, because its true. the fact that its funny but you realise it actually happens is devastating, which makes comedy and satire connect to you deeply, in some strange way and on some strange level. this scene really means something to me.

'this scene is not funny' does anyone know, this film isnt meant to be flat out funny. its not and they didnt damn intend it that way. its meant to be satirical, sad and funny at the same time. that also creates an interesting mix to the point where it feels like a dream. when i first started watching this movie i realised it was going to be different from the rest, and its freaking brilliant.

Darren McGovern If that was the case, they could have had the guy do something actually funny, like mistake a philosopher's name for a brand of beer. Or say something clever like: "I don't care for Nietzsche. What's wrong with Nietzsche? Nothing." I honestly felt embarrassed for them while watching this.

Catzilla No accounting for taste
@KneelB4Bacon
@KneelB4Bacon 9 лет назад
Darren McGovern Well, actually there's plenty of accounting for taste and I did it in my last post. Finding and discussing the explanations for our tastes is a really valuable activity. It's the sort of thing that lets you get to know someone else on a deeper level and find a more fundamental sentiment that we share, despite the initial surface-level disagreement. But when you say "there's no accounting for taste", you're robbing yourself and those around you of such opportunities. Humor, (at least the non-slapstick kind) is based on subverting expectations. The humor in this scene seems to come from acknowledging that what they're doing isn't funny, which at first, IS funny. But constantly acknowledging that it isn't funny eventually leads to the audience realizing that . . . . it isn't funny.
@ihatespam2
@ihatespam2 9 лет назад
Catzilla OK, I'll bite. The whole conversation is about the fact that despite the excellent topic of conversation, dumb people with little interest in the world etc. will make it a "bad conversation." That does not mean it is not funny because it is bad, in fact that is where the humor is. Their comments are all reflections of their petty and, surface and trivial minds. Some people may not get it, some people may not find that funny. So, in the end, you are arguing a point that proves my point. No matter how much you explain the situation they will not find the topic interesting. Similarly, trying to explain a joke to someone will not likely make them laugh at it. Either they don't get it or it is a joke that wouldn't make them laugh anyway. All of the intellectualizing in the world won't help the joke if perhaps the timing doesn't work for you or person delivering the joke doesn't connect to you etc. If it was easy to discuss and explain everyone would do it and we would all agree on what is funny, but it isn't and we don't. To me when Palin say, "well we went to Disney land last year," is about as funny as Python ever was. He is so locked into his surface reading of life that he doesn't even get the question. Laughing yet? ;)

+Darren McGovern they're not making fun of Americans but of people who don't think (who, in this scene happen to be americans) it's the same reason why they go to a beach paradise resort and end up in a restaurant decorated as a british medieval dungeon. This is making fun of boring-ass regular people who go through life without thinking not even once.
