Carl Gustav Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist and psychologist, founded analytic psychology, or depth psychology, which he named to distinguish it from Freud's psychoanalytic theory. He became interested in the problems of the unconscious mind upon meeting Freud and collaborating with him. It was through this collaboration that he learned the psychological method he would later utilize extensively: word association. However, Jung felt that Freud's interpretations, particularly regarding libido and dream analysis, overly emphasized sexual causes. Due to this and other disagreements, he separated from Freud's psychoanalytic school to focus solely on studying the psyche. Jung's most significant contribution to analytic psychology was his theory of the collective unconscious.
To explain, we must delve into the functions of the conscious and unconscious mind, which enable individuals to navigate both the external world and their inner lives. These functions also determine different psychological types among individuals. Two authors and their respective works profoundly influenced Jung: Johann Wolfgang v on Goethe's "Faust" and Friedrich Nietzsche's writings. Nietzsche's insights, in particular, shaped Jung's understanding of the human mind. Jung posited that the human psyche comprises a conscious part, which is the youngest and least developed, and an unconscious part, which is ancient and inherited from primitive ancestors to the present. He elaborated on these concepts in his book "Man and His Symbols," where he explores the notions of complexes and the unconscious.
