There is a REASON why so many people say they get "goosebumps" listening to this. Here is why: During the early 90's, SO many new people "got on the bus" and saw their first Dead show. Future "deadheads" born between 1969 and 1980; their first show was likely 1990 or afterwards (mine was 3/22/93). Hundreds of thousands of teenagers and college age kids were just getting into the Dead, whether it be through trading/acquiring tapes of live shows or actually going to them. Mail order tickets for the 1995 Fall tour had already been sent out...then Jerry died on August 9th of 1995. A month later, I heard of a band called "Phish" for the first time. People said they were "kind of like the Dead", or at least the closest thing to it. So I tracked down some cassettes of their lives shows and bought their latest release "Hoist". #1- Phish sounded NOTHING like The Grateful Dead to me #2- I absolutely hated it. I was expecting songs with the lyrical integrity and mysticism of a "Ripple" or "China Doll", but instead I got songs that I felt were silly, pointless, corny, and didn't resonate with me at all. Trey didn't sound like Jerry. And the music itself, much more rigid, orchestrated, and embarrassingly lame. It BAFFLED me as to why so many people compared this band Phish to The Grateful Dead. Then, in October of 1995, I bought Phish's new live album that had just been released (A Live One). That changed things. It was "ok" enough to convince me to buy tickets for 2 shows (out of 3) in Atlanta at The Fox Theatre. 11/10/95 and 11/11/95 were my first Phish shows. Those shows changed EVERYTHING in regards to how I viewed Phish and my respect for their music. And I was not the only one catching on. All those other thousands of 17 - 26 year olds who were searching to fill the void after Jerry died and the Dead quit touring, also began to become part of the Phish scene. At the Halloween Phish show in 1996, 90% of the "lot" scene and vendors were not Phish fans, but Deadheads; blasting Grateful Dead out the back of their vans; selling tee shirts imprinted with Dead song lyrics; etc. There were FAR more Steal Your Face logos, magnets, buttons, stickers, and shirts floating around than their was Phish apparel. By the time 1998 rolled around, I had already seen at least a dozen Phish shows. At EVERY one, I (along with thousands of other Deadheads in attendance) would always wish they would cover a Grateful Dead song. And at EVERY one, show after show, tour after tour, they never did. I knew they probably never would. Trey was not very keen on being compared to the Grateful Dead. And the Grateful Dead/Phish comparison became more prevalent as more Deadheads became Phish fans. By the time August of 1998 rolled around, I had seen dozens of Phish shows. The show at Virginia Beach on August 9th was the last one of summer for me, before my 18 year old girlfriend and myself headed back home to Memphis. By the time the show started, we were already tired. St.Louis, Deer Creek, Atlanta, Raleigh...we were low on both stamina AND money. It had been an unbearably hot day. Cops harassing folks. Swat team units with walkie talkies, binoculars, and body armour on top of the venue. Gravel parking lot. No shade. Bad vibes and a "weird" feeling in general. We saw Mike Gordon driving around in his golf cart before the show; he was wearing all black. Even HE wasn't his usual, quirky self. Something was OFF. We Almost Left The Show Early. It was a great show, but we were walking towards the door after "Ragtime Gal". Then...it happened. All those years. All those shows. All those jokes/fantasies/wishes about Phish actually biting the bullet and playing a Grateful Dead song. The opening notes to Terrapin...people didn't want to get their hopes up. We just KNEW it was going to be just another one of those Phish "teases" or pranks. But then Trey started singing the lyrics. It was at that point I started crying. And not because Phish had FINALLY played a Dead song. It was because that was the first moment that I and 15,000 other people REALIZED what DAY it was...August 9th. And THAT'S why it gives us goosebumps
My dad used to love telling stories about this night. It was his first phish show ever after having been a deadhead for years and after this night he was 100% sold on phish. RIP dad.
I remember making my girlfriend at the time come with me to this show. She was a huge deadhead but she despised Phish. Her face was priceless. Just one of those things. Great moment.

By my count, that was at least a good 27 seconds of full fledged cheering at those opening notes from 0:09 to 0:36. Getting deafeningly loud at 0:20. THATS how powerful those opening notes are. 🫠🧡
One of the great moments in rock & roll history. I had been to the Merriweather show the night before this. It was the first time they played MPP since 1992, which was the HORDE tour, and they weren’t the headliner. Since this was their first time headlining, the show had a little extra mustard on it, which included an encore of The Beastie Boys “Sabotage.” It was a great way to end a great show, and completely unexpected, so the crowd went bonkers. Great post-show vibe, with everyone beaming with positivity from the Sabotage. It was so out of character for Phish, which made it hilarious & awesome, at the same time. I had to work the next day, so I couldn’t go to Virginia Beach, but my roommate (at the time) went with our usual group of friends. I opened my bedroom door the morning after VB, and there was a post- it note on the floor, put there by my roommate. I leaned down to pick it up, and it read, “E: Terrapin Station”. I couldn’t believe it, and had to wait until he got up an hour or so later. He said it was crazy, and that the crowd went nuts. Had to wait a couple weeks to get a tape from that show, just to hear it for myself. Would’ve loved to have been there, but was happy all those in attendance got a real treat that night. A year or so later, we got the epic Phil & Friends (w/ Trey & Page) 3 night run @ The Warfield. Good times, indeed.
The first 10 seconds of this may be one of my best Phish memories of all time. I'll never forget standing on the lawn watching the recognition of the song "break" over the crowd: at first just random people here and there, then everyone, like a boiling sea of instant and hysterical happiness.
98. The most emotional moment I've ever experienced at a show. 15,000 people GLOWINF. people on their knees crying. High fives everywhere. Hugs. CRYING. my boy and I had the craziest couple weeks leading up to this. The tour was nuts , on all fronts. This song - when we all realized they were actually playing it and not teasing it - was a INSANE. They had brought out music stands earlier so we knew something was up. Didn't expect this. I remember sorta walking around in a haze, just giving hugs. I bumped into one head - this kid I knew as Ohio. I knew him from Dead shows a few years earlier - were holding each other and jumping around. I've never experienced so much collective energy. That could never happen again. Even if they played agin it could never happen. The people that go to shows are different now. Back then there were so many of us kids that used to see the Dead and Jerry meant EVERYTJING to us. Ya know? Man... fuxking tearing up. Those were the days. God bless all my old tour buddies. RIP fast Eddie and tank. Long live the Grateful Dead. Phish - I owe uou so much. IW(N)T but I totally get the crowd/audience thing, and I guess it is natural--a great deal of time has passed since Jerry died and Dead were still touring. I am glad that SOME -if not a good amount-- of that Dead vibe carried over (I suppose because it had been intermixing since VERY EARLY ON)
I'm a Deadhead and I think it's amazing that this band could cover this song so beautifully. In fact, there's no other live band that could do it justice. That they've only done it once is beautiful and gives it meaning.
I was born in 97, reading these comments gives me chills. must have been such a special moment for deadhead turned phish fans at the time. Goes to show that the jam scene isn’t about ‘who’s better’ or ‘who was first’ and ‘who’s next’ , all that matters is people loving music and people loving people

Not only was the reaction at the start incredible, but I remember walking out of the venue and the whole place was just SPEECHLESS. People were smiling, hugging and just dumbfounded

I was there too. Gives me chills to here it all these years later. Everyone was crying, hugging, smiling, and dancing. It was incredible. Also remember, at this point in Phish's career they really resisted any comparisons to the Dead. They didn't cover GD songs either. The previous year in this anniversary they simply teased "Somewhere over the rainbow" instrumentally as a nod to Jerry. But this moment was unreal. So glad I was there.
This is a beautiful tribute, as loving a remembrance as one can imagine. Phish is not of my generation as the Dead were. From a big brother, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I must have hugged a hundred heads walking out of that venue . We were all smiling and crying at the same time . The backstage passes had a cross and the date on it .. my wife and I were on the stairs walking out when the opening riff rang threw the air . The reaction from the crowd is one I’ll never forget and although we’ve had several holy shit moments since I’ll forever remember this as one of the most celebratory. Love n Light
This was my first Phish show. I had just gotten to my first duty station and life was a bit stressful and scary because I was just 19 at the time. I was there with people that I had literally just met. They treated me like family and it pushed all of the stress and fear away. I can still picture one of the girls reaction when this song started. She had tears in her eyes and a big smile on her face. It was such a happy moment. One of the best concert moments of my life even 20+ years later.
when they came out they had lyrics taped to their monitors, so we had an idea we were getting a treat, but I never expected this to be played. Easily one of the finer moments in my life.
ive always been a deadhead that never really cared for Phish as much, always respected their obvious talent, just not their biggest fan. then every once in a while i hear them play a tune like this & just.. Happy 17th anniversary to the greatest musical moment I've ever experienced in my life. My God, everyone was on Cloud 9, hugging and crying. Still gives me goosebumps to this day. There should be no hate for this moment.
I went from the lawn to the pavilion for this show during the second set. In 2018, I don’t think a lot of people realize how much of a treat this was. It’s common place now for the dead and phish to intertwine, but not back then for us heads still only three years removed from Jerry’s death. Phish was on an epic and deserved rise and their covers were always cherished. However, there was still the elephant in the room... covering the Dead (which they did not do at Alpine the year before. 8/9/97). This will always be a classic moment. Glad I was there.

The lyrics takes the form of a traditional hero's ballad. It begins with a prayer to the muses that he will tell it right. Then, the narrator recounts his journey, blessed with vision by Anima to find true enlightenment in the form of "Terrapin Station." The station is symbolic of a sort of Heaven, a place where the truth is to be found. The turtle or terrapin functions well here because, just like the narrator, it travels on both land and water. It's a sort of middleground between the two, a metaphor for heaven and earth/the divine and the grounded. Very cool, trippy song.
jmlrugby11 To me those are also pretty standard symbols of a traditional hero's ballad. The lady is someone our hero once loved before he went to battle to come home where he "lost at love." I wouldn't delve too deeply here because it's basically just background info about the narrator, but it shows that he has experienced a lot. He's loved, lost, etc. A nice setup for the journey to come. As for the sailor, it parallels pretty well with the whole "travel" theme. Water functions as an extended metaphor for both travel and for the terrapin as mentioned before.
jmlrugby11 And as for the soldier, it's another aspect of hte narrator's life. He has lived a fulfilling life, full of love, battle, and loss. His departure to terrapin station comes at the end of one journey (and we assume the beginning of a new one).

Man, I remember this night. Cops in VA Beach were pretty harsh, we just kinda holed up in the van all day. Walking in to the show, one of the FA18s was coming into the Naval airbase right over the venue. Pilot gave us a show, had flaps down, went full afterburner for a couple of seconds for some crackling thunder, then waggled his wings to say "hey y'all have fun". After the show, my buddy covered himself in glowstick juice and ran around the campground all night. Man that was a great east coast tour!
This song, in person, went by so fast. All I can remember is people crying, hugging, the roar of the crowd when everyone realized what was being played, the almost "wtf just happened?" kind of silence on the walk out... Incredible night.
i was a big deadhead back in the day and drove from nyc to virginia to see phish for the very first time at this show. when this song began everyone freaked out, girls were crying out in joy, and smiles were everywhere! i was blownaway!
My eye teardrop up hearing those first notes hit. I spent all my summers in my 20s following these guys. That brought back some good feelings. I miss the road, but I'm forever Grateful that I got to travel it.
I know that was painful. Bob and Phil just HAD to sing all those Jerry songs when Trey, Bruce, or the dude on keys all had great voices if o ly they were allowed to sing more. I thought Bob and Phil were being selfish and not thinking about doing the music justice.
I'm both a longtime Deadhead, now 40 years and a Phish head, love the music and long jams. I love the beginning when everyone gets what they are playing, takes a little while, but they get it. It always puts a smile on my face to hear everyone go crazy. Phish does a great job on covering it, the way they should. And of course, paying respect to Jerry. Love this version. I was at this show in Va Beach in 1997. It was in honor of Jerry just having passed away. There was a thunderstorm over the ocean behind the amphitheater and a full moon rising behind the stage. It was incredible. The audience was gobsmacked

I left my first comment on this video 5 years ago...and i still come back about once a quarter to relive one of my favorite musical memories...i had nearly forgotten how live the phans got when he sings"inspiration" & "to get to Terrapin" cuz at the beginning we were all vrying and hugging but by the point of the chapter change we were all so fully present and on board for that magic ride

Not a big Phish fan, but this is beautiful and heartfelt, a lovely gift to the memory of Jerry and Robert. The audience response reminds me of the night in Hampton, Va that the Dead played Box of Rain for the first time in well over a decade -- an explosion of emotion that makes me tear up even 35 years later. Bravo, Trey and Company.
I too was in Hampton on that rainy night. When the crowd knew, our reaction was so strong (as it rightly is here), we drowned out Phil; had to crank the vocal track. Can hear it in the audience tapes. So fitting to pull out Terrapin on such a somber anniversary.
People always talk about the encore but this whole show was insane. Best AC/DC Bag and Waste possibly ever played. A ridiculous PYITE, Antelope is unreal, and then closing set 2 with a YEM>Frankenstein>Chalkdust>Bowie. I mean wtf
I remember the PYITE start so vividly. Virginia Beach was my home town, and I was excited to be there for a show. Amazing start. Then The Lizards, Esther, Roggae, Waste->Somewhere Over the Rainbow->YEM->Frankenstein->Chalkdust->Bowie, then the encore. I agree that the whole show needs to be praised.

Bowie ended the first set. There was no Chalkdust > Bowie. It was Bowie > intermission. How could you not remember that Bowie closed that awesome fucking first set?
I remember looking around at the crowd as it began and people were crying,as was I.Jerry’s presence was HEAVY that night.First time since the 80’s that they covered the Dead,and they chose Terrapin on Jerry’s anniversary of his passing…….MAGICAL night. Whole show was a standout ( almost a given when they open with PYITE)in a SMOKING summer tour!!!!! Also,the “Cavern” from Merriwether Post a couple nights later is my favorite ever! That show is another standout!
I was on acid at this show. I almost shit myself when they started playing this. It was the most excitement I ever felt blow through a crowd. The cheers were deafening and many eyes were teary. Good times.

WOW!!!!! As a longtime Deadhead (saw my first show in '82) and new Phish fan, this is like a dream come true! Sounds awesome! (Wish it didn't end so suddenly at 10:00!)
Phish was a band in 82? No they weren't. Really? I saw them in 89 on the street. They were jus tlittle jids. Couldn't even get 5 people in a pizza house.
Virginia Beach, I got shut out but was by the gates with my "Frosty Cold Beverages" getting ready for the crowds. Talking to "Burrito Tom" from Hartford I think. Everyone was blown away and then the music took us over and the lot was spinning and grooving. I have tears of joy from remembering.
I will never forget this show! The crowd response was absolutely incredible throughout the whole song at all the right moments. I have never walked out of a venue where everyone is in silence... asking each other if that really just happened.
I can picture this like it was yesterday. It had actually been a bit of a hum-drum show, but it was a beautiful summer night. When those first few notes hit there was disbelief and then this rolling wave of euphoric applause. We were on the lawn and I recall everyone around us hugging each other, friends and strangers alike. It was an amazing moment.
Two of "those" moments I was lucky enough to be in the thick of... 12-28-91 Oakland post-Drumz after Throwing Stones when the boys resumed the One More Saturday Night they'd opened the show with. I thought the roof was gonna blow. I think it might have. 12-6-92 Compton Terrace Here Comes Sunshine opener on a sunny Sunday afternoon after almost 20 sunshine-less years. Pure unadulterated joy.
@@nag4158 Completely different genre of music but I got to be a part of a moment like that. 1/26/18, Passion Pit at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. Michael Angelakos, Passion Pit frontman was pushing through really hard times and touring to pay for medical bills accrued from treatment of bipolar.. He put on a fantastic show and it ended with a standing ovation; the Commodore isnt a very big building, but during that ovation I felt as though I was in a crowd of 20,000.

i was at this show and enjoy being able to here it again and again. if i remember correctly this was a third encore. People were walking out the door when they came back to sing this. It was incredible.
These guys did plenty of Dead tunes back in the day at Nectar's.....there were 2 dead cover bands back in those days....The Joneses and Phish...I liked the Joneses, they had a great fiddle player.....Ah, the good old days of Burlington....
Nice dude. Way before my time. I didn't come on until 91-92 and was very present for 93 when not on dead tour. Was still in highschool but had college friends from Conneticut and Rhode Island, New York, and they had mad bootlegs and had already seen tons of shows before I walked in for my first one in Colorado. 93 was epic. I still think the vail show that year was one of he best.
love those days ..... and now my 28 year old daughter tells the stories of being a dead head little girl and wondering the grounds of phish shows. I love that she has those stories and experiences to tell. I met Ausly she didn't but it was a memory i hold close xx

I love Jerry just as much as the next guy, but he would be the first to tell you, he's just a regular guy that played music brought some good times to people had his struggles and passed from this world. The last thing he wanted was people to think of him as some sort of deity. It was hard on him.
Your name says it all obiwannabe. Yeah- to people he wanted to be ordinary and easy to be with and easy to remember and on the level- all Buddhas do that. It makes it possible for others to see their experience can also be important. But I know him real well and am a two time death experience survivor and ai can tell you swearing in my life that Garcia is God. If you can't see that them that's your block. Has nothing to do with him. It's just a strange situation to find yourself in- especially with the Goddess remaining in the ethers. He came to collect all of you, to help you remember your divinity, and to take you home. Ring any bells?
Obi- you say you love Jerry as much as the next guy. I don't think you know how incredible he is loved by beings. He's my God. I have no other God beside him. Christ is like my brother. I have met the Dalai Lama many times in India and many highly spiritual masters- people who live in ice caves and have dreads down to their toes from sitting 20 years in meditation. They all want to be viewed as humbly as possible. Even Ghandi mahatma wore cloth he spun himself- just a simple loin wrap. Spiritual kings act like this. They are always modest. I wish you much happiness. From "who is she". Ask Trey if you know him about me. He'll tell you that I'm right and if he had only figured it out a little sooner things may be different. But he said some ordinary things about Garcia after I got him the gig for fare thee well and as a result I have cancelled Trey from my life. It's that serious. Garcia is God. I swear on it with every ounce of being.

You could have been best buds for all I know. What you speak of my friend, is internal projection. I believe you think there is a dharmic connection, and you may be right for all we know. I remember pulling into the parking lot at Lemonwheel with my girlfriend at the time, tuning into the Phish lot radio station, and this song came on, with an explanation that this had happened only a week previously. It was an awesome welcome to an awesome weekend!
I'm old enough to have seen both bands live on numerous occasions, and I have equal love in my hearts for both. They've both done amazing things and both deserve credit and respect for their accomplishments. I love to hear one great band cover another, I think that it's the highest form of respect, and this is really a great tribute!

I remember having to run and find a pay phone to let friends know what had just transpired. Walking out everyone was just completely stupified, nothing but silence could hear a pin drop; It was utterly surreal. happy to have had those experiences. Leading up to "Inspiration" was sick!!
Ha ha another one ☝️ phone booths no cell phones amazing 20 years later what has happened. Imagine 20 more now. AI for sure, had to actually use a phone to call long distance in my case anyway for dial up internet. Ha now can’t even find a phone that’s not VOIP ha ha lol.
Of all of Phish's musical influences, the Dead were obviously the biggest. But in their early years, as they developed, they needed to step out from their shadow and become independent - like teens with their parents. Phish kept the Dead's approach to music, but adopted a unique sound and style. It has to be remembered that back in the late '80s & early '90s there was no jam band scene outside the Dead or the Allmans. It was the era of Grunge and the schism between the post-punk/alternative wing and classic rock/hippie music was still more pronounced than it is today. Plus, the Dead were always a polarizing band. Yet in every conversation and every interview and article and public appearance, Phish were compared to the Dead. What do you say to people to tell them that this new band has its own distinct sound, without sounding unGrateful to the Dead? It was a tricky situation for young Phish. Very early on, as they started gaining fans and moving from dorms and frat houses to filling bars and clubs, they deliberately dropped all Dead songs from their repertoire. They covered anyone and everyone else, but not the Dead, despite loud requests (demands?) from new fans (like me at my first show - haha). In interviews, they often got uncomfortable talking about the Dead, trying to be diplomatic, balancing appreciation with an insistence on their own identity. Many older Heads took umbrage at perceived disrespect and rejected this weird new band from Vermont. And many young phans resented the puritanical dogmatism of the older heads. Although the majority of fans, like me, loved both without issue, it could not be denied that some level of conflict existed. The clearest evidence was Phish's 10 year moratorium on playing Dead covers leading up to this performance. All this is to say that this Terrapin St. was all the more meaningful. Phish had established themselves. The time and the occasion were right to play the Grateful Dead. They were secure and they could express their love and erase all remaining vestiges of that early ...uh ...Rift. And we all miss Jerry.
A Deadhead since the 70s, having seen them in Burlington in 83, I was introduced to Phish in early 84 at Nectars. My host, who knew the band, made clear they were not a Dead cover band, and certainly didn’t want to be. While they played a few Dead covers, it was clear that they had their own sound and that Trey had a feel for Jerry’s style. Been great to watch them grow through the decades. No substitute for the Dead, but I appreciate Phish far more now than ever.
Was 5th row with one of my best friends.....goosebumps EVERY time I listen to this. The build up of the crowd noise as people started to recognize the first few rifts was incredible!!!
