Just to destroy you more, the backing vocals in Halloween (whatever you want, I'll be whatever you want) is Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes *who moon song is written about*
“ Chinese Satellite” appreciation! I definitely think it’s one of the under-appreciated tracks on Punisher, and to see you have such a strong reaction to it made me feel less weird about me hysterically crying the first time I heard it, lmao.
Embarrassed with a picket sign if it meant that I'd see you when I die - This line also made me completely speechless. Really creates some empathy for devout religious individuals and is just so raw in expressing the potential motives for these individuals. As a gay man I definitely feel this lyric on a deep level and really feel sorry for anti-LGBT protesters in that it separates the desperation of individuals to be accepted into a religion in hopes of some salvation and the actual act of picketing. Just makes me well up everytime I hear it.
TASTE!!!! i loove how u dissect the lyrics in these it makes me pick up on things i never noticed before!! the moon controlling the water thing in moon song 🤯
This album helped me get through the pandemic. It’s comforting yet ominous and the songs meaning and tone always seem to contrast, which I love. Also, I love your voice and hearing your interpretations of her songs.🫶🏽
Love this !!! One of my favorite albums of all time :) Highly recommend Stranger In The Alps, and for storytelling I suggest Preachers Daughter by Ethel Cain, it’s a concept album and it’s insanely insanely good
Chinese satellite make me sob honestly its beautiful, ICU has such a great production ( if you're a work of art I'm standing too close i can see the brush strokes changed me), moon song and saviour complex are amazing songs and I know the end is one of my all time favourite songs, I always play it as the plane lands lmao. I chose the music video to show at college last week (I study media) as we were doing a project looking into different types and I was so disappointed that no one liked the song or got anything out of the video. Phoebe is honestly an amazing, talented song writer, I know she's not unpopular but she is immensly underrated. Please tell me you've discovered that when she says I can't even get you to play the drums they stop.
Subscribed for your eventual listen to “Stranger in the Alps”! Hopefully you get into boygenius, her power trio supergroup with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus (Graceland Too is about Julien, and they’re featured on the harmonies in that song) - (and they also have a new album dropping at the end of March), Better Oblivion Community Center (another supergroup with Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes, who was the male harmonizer on Halloween and who Moon Song might have been about), as well as probably her first real love song ever lol, “Sidelines”.
Firstly thank you so much for subscribing, it does genuinely mean a lot to me, but more importantly for that analysis because I’m still just getting on board the Phoebe train! I knew I’d love her but needed the right time - my younger self really loved devastating music and he would have relished this album. So you think I should do ‘Stranger in the Alps’ next? And any other music recommendations?
@@TheTrickR00m Based on your reaction to this album you will absolutely love Stranger in the Alps! She also releases some devastatingly beautiful covers every winter and those are amazing as well
i will never not watch someone react to punisher!!! one of my favorite albums ever and i loved hearing your commentary and your perspective of the lyrics :) i am SO glad you mentioned the picket sign line in chinese satellite, one of my favorite lyrics of all time. ALSO the "if i could give you the moon i would give you the moon" hurt 10x more when i learned that Phoebe is linked to the goddess/titan of the moon in Latin and Greek mythology. she is quite literally saying she would give the person herself if she was able to. UGH!!!! i would love to see you react to more albums, maybe five seconds flat by lizzy mcalpine, stick season by noah kahan, or superache by conan gray
HER BRAIN! How does she manage to do it? That's so cool about the link to the Goddess of the Moon, it just adds so many more layers too. I've heard Conan's album (brilliant/soul destroying aha) but I've not heard the rest so I must add to my list! Thank you sm by the way
what an amazing lyrical breakdown this was!! loved the details you picked up and your perspective and thoughts on them. if you haven't already checked out 'five seconds flat' by Lizzy McAlpine i would love your take on that one. absolutely killer songwriting exploring lyrical themes in a very fresh way combined with world-class production!!
kinda late to this video but phoebe talked about how she and her dad's relationship got better after she released kyoto. it's very sad because just as her relationship was healing with her father, he recently passed away. he passed away on january 3rd 2023.
so need an elliott smith deep-dive, his influence in the sonic department and some writing quirks specifically show in Phoebe's work so thoroughly. such an underrated artist that definitely deserves his own flowers. moon song is my favourite from Punisher, it's the closest thing to perfection Phoebe has ever released and i have spent probably weeks on this song alone.
Ooh no way - okay, now I need to check it out. That’s high endorsement. Also I couldn’t agree more, it hasn’t left my head since I first heard it and it’s just so deep and multifaceted too.
@@TheTrickR00m oh my god, PLEASE do the Elliott deep dive!! My first listen to Phoebe I was blown away by how much intentional inspiration/influence from Conor Oberst and Elliott Smith I was hearing;it was a bit like hearing the best version of the writer I could've become based on my childhood faves. I think Phoebe is one of the current big greats in the industry on never toeing the line between referential and derivative tbh
Hi! Just had to pause the video to let you know how much I'm enjoying your reaction! I love when someone new reacts to this album because it is my favorite album of all time, Phoebe really is a special talent. I'm so impressed with your analysis of her songs and how well you understand the symbolism of some of her lyrics, especially when you quickly realized how Chinese Satellite is about religion/wanting to believe in a higher or other worldly power. Also, it's my favorite song on the album and I basically had the same emotional reaction you did the first time I listened to it (especially the picket sign line, that one hit close to home). Okay, excited to watch the second half of your reaction!
Hey Sarah! Thank you so much for checking out my reaction, I literally think it is such a work of art and need to listen to Stranger in the Alps as soon as possible now. I had a really particular crisis with believing in a Higher Power when I was like 11, so I totally understand what she's saying and I just love that line around the picket sign too. Hope you enjoyed the second half of the reaction!
@@TheTrickR00m i did also love the second half of the reaction! I'm excited for when you react to Stranger in the Alps, it's also a really great album!
Just to break you more, the backing vocals in Halloween (whatever you want, I'll be whatever you want) is Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes *who moon song is written about*
cant believe you have so few subscribers, your reaction was great and so thoughtful, punisher is one of my favourite albums, I heard it about six months after it came out when i was about 17 and it totally changed the kind of music i listen to i was listening to indie music but a lot of it was bands and male artists but phoebes music changed my taste completely and now a lot of my favourite stuff is from female solo artists who make beautiful music. (also a Taylor fan gotta ask your fav song)
Thanks so much - I know, I am still starting out but thank you so much for following and also sharing all of your knowledge about Phoebe because all of this information is incredible. I didn't even notice that the drums stopped when she said that, you really have opened my eyes to her even more.
new subscriber here! love phoebe and her art so much!! you should react to "Preachers daughter" by Ethel Cain, it tells the story of a character from her family issues to her kidnapping and death. It's really good! I'm sure you'd love it, it's also very unique
omg i loooove this reaction, iteresting remarks. my fave has to be I Know The End. I hope you check out some more phoebe stuff in the future! - new subscriber
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it - the way I Know The End sums up the whole album is genius and I was so taken aback. Should I listen to Stranger in the Alps?
@@TheTrickR00m Stranger in the Alps is definetely one of my favorite projects from the last couple of years. it's very unique. i'd love to see you react to it. esp your take on the lyrics.
I Know The End's music video is so emotionally resonant and deepened the song for me; I really can't recommend it enough. The music video for Savior Complex is chill, too (and it was directed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, starring Paul Mescal).
@@TheTrickR00m Well, they were dating until recently (I think they got to know each other doing the video). There's a really cute TikTok(?) interview between the two of them, which is when they met. Here's a link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aQhjYQra20A.html I think it was to promote Normal People and Punisher, which were released around the same time in 2020. Apparently they were both a fan of each other's work before they met (Paul used her music to help prepare for Normal People). I know way too much about these people I have never met lol.
i love music reactions channels for their insights on the instruments and production but phoebe's lyrics seem to go over their heads. you just seem to get her lyrics and interperit them amazingly!! loved it and love phoebe so much
Thank you so much, honestly that is so kind of you to say. I really love dissecting lyrics especially of an artist i'm not as familiar with because that's how they reveal themselves! And she is such a star, it's really clear.
btw the figure in greek mythology most commonly associated with the moon was the titanness Phoebe, also one of the moons of Saturn is named Phoebe in honor of the titanness so in moon song, phoebe saying that she would give them the moon both means that she would do the impossible and catch the moon for this person, but also give them all of her
Loved the video! Really insightful analysis mixed with real emotion and vibing to the music. Here are some albums I’d recommend: The 1975 - A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships The 1975 - Being Funny In A Foreign Language Lizzy McAlpine - Five Seconds Flat Manchester Orchestra - A Black Mile to the Surface Manchester Orchestra - The Million Masks of God Bon Iver - 22, A Million Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell I’ve already listed too many haha.
I think you'd like one of my favourite artists Samia, her music is different from Phoebe but also has thoughtful lyrics, themes and its a mix of indie pop, indie folk and indie rock. Her album The Baby is brilliant and she's just as good live.
loved this analysis. and i can't wait to see your reaction to stranger in the alps! if you're looking for more music recommendations, and haven't yet listened to lana del rey, i would HIGHLY recommend born to die the paradise edition or ultraviolence to be future videos
I never really realised chinese satellite was about religion until this video bc i forgot what evangelicals meant lol just thoight it was angels. I interpreted it as grief. "Swear i could feel you through the walls, but thats impossible" is my favourite line and it hurts so much especially if u do relate it to grief. Because it is impossible to ever feel that person again. Aside from I Know The End, Chinese satellite is my favorite song on the album
Boygenius! Check out Boygenius next!!! I think one or both of the other members of the "supergroup" - Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker - featured on Phoebe's song "Graceland Too". Some have speculated that the song is about Julien. They also have a second album coming out soon.
Hello, okay I just watched this one video and I can tell immediately that you’re gonna be one of my new favorite music reaction channels and you are VERY underrated!!!!! Loved the reaction, it was great. New subscriber checkkkkkkk 🫶
