"I just love the sport so much. I've taken nutrition and the mental side of it more seriously. I've upped my training in the gym and focused on more running specific techniques."
Phoebe Gill on securing her spot at the Olympics after becoming the UK 800m champion in 1:58.66 🇬🇧
The 17-year-old also praises Jemma Reekie and states she's looked up to her for a long time 🙌

Wow, two great performances from someone so young. Who would of thought a girl who has not long been 17 would leave a world class athlete like Reekie in her wake, after giving Reekie an armchair ride too. It's quite astonishing. I hope she enjoys her Olympic experience win or loss. I am sure she will give it her best shot, i believe she could go sub 1:46 in the right circumstance, which will move the under 18 world best out of sight. Given how she performed in the British champs, and the way she got her PB, front running in cool windy conditions, suggests she has more in the locker time wise.

@@lionheart4552 Haha 1:46 would be rather good for a lady. I should ware my classes more often. I'm shocked in just how strong she is at that age. Imagine how strong she could to be with another year or two of winter training behind her. Some athletes are naturally strong, and can take the train required in their stride. Gill looks like that kind of athlete. I wouldn't be surprised if she doubles up in future championships, programme permitting.

@@norwolf47651.56 is possible for someone so young, but it's all about getting the right time for the first lap. Today was 59.78 too slow to get 1.56 Before was 56.56 was too fast for 1.56 If Phoebe runs 57 or 57.50 then maybe 1.56 is possible. Although for the Olympics just make sure she is in the front few places on the first lap then wind it up. If leading Keeley and Moraa would just come past her.

Brilliant performance! Her mental attitude, let alone her obvious running talent, suggests Phoebe could be a sensational new star. Keely Hodgkinson has another threat in Paris to replace Athing Mu..... youngsters never suffer from the same fears and anxieties as older athletes. Phoebe is comparable to athletics superstar Femke Bol's long striding, effortless style - she is moving much more quickly than it looks.

1. I ran the 800 in school. She says adrenalin, but that was talent + dedication to training hard + some serious mental toughness. 2. A reason for her improvement is easy to overlook: She's still growing. 3. Some of her competitors might be faster right now, but none of them were as fast when they were 17 as she is.
@lionheart4552
@lionheart4552 Месяц назад
Although It may appear that way this performance was neither mental toughness nor dedication to training. She is just amazed about her rise as much as the rest of us. Remember she was running 2 02 until that remarkable 1.57 from nowhere which she says was pure accident & unexpected.

Delighted but not surprised. After seeing her Belfast race (1.57ish) it was obvious she had both the form and the talent. It was just a question of whether her coach thought she needed protecting from competing at the highest level for a little longer. On this evidence she is ready.

She mentioned going to university, if she goes to university in the UK, it'll cost her many tens of thousands of pounds, but if she is good enough to get to the Olymipics then plenty of American Universities should be offering her scholerships, and they will have very advanced track and field programmes.
@corleth2868
@corleth2868 Месяц назад
Loughborough offer sports scholarships and if you're at University in Europe then running in most of the Diamond League races would be easy enough vs the 1 race they hold in the US. I doubt she'd have any trouble at all to get a sponsor to cover any Uni fees too. She could make a lot more money running in Europe vs earning nothing running in the NCAAs. Sure they can now make some money at US colleges but there are no restrictions on how she can earn money while at a UK University.

If, as we might expect, Phoebe does well in the Olympics, there will be a queue of US Universities a mile long making her offers. I can't think of any UK athlete so promising at that age except, maybe Katherine Merry. Let's hope that her career isn't plagued by injury. I should add, that such is her strength, I can imagine in the future 1500m might become her stronger event, but time will tell and roll on Paris.
@trickygoose2

They will do, but unless she turns down lottery funding, she won't be going to the US. She also would not be eligible to win any prize money from events like the World Champs while competing on the US college circuit.

In any event, I just have a feeling that Phoebe Gill has the strength for the longer even as well, and maybe when a bit older would be capable of doubling up, just as Kelly Holmes managed in 2004 in Athens (astonishing to think that Kelly was almost twice Phoebe's current age when she completed that double).

True but if she hits the first lap in 57 secs, she did 56.56 before, now she might finish low 1.57 or 1.56 and only Keeley and Moraa can run that fast. If Phoebe runs 58 or 59 first lap more runners will overtake her? Do you see the problem. At the moment she hasn't got exceptional speed for the second lap just the ability to keep going
