Join me in the workshop as I continue to work on the 2 fretboards we started in the previous episode.
First we take a look at the Orange binding experiment.
And I show you how I cut the fret slots using my Proton table-saw setup.
This is the first guitar building series coming from the new workshop so I'm very excited to show you around as I'm building this guitar and explain what I'm doing and more importantly, why and how I'm doing things.
Take a look at the Obsidian Ebony from ThermalWood Canada:

Experimentation doesn’t always work out. This series has given me some great ideas. And… it has emphasized the importance of being precise. Thank you!

I’ve looked up on how to do this and from the forums I read, people are using vacuum chambers with cactus juice and add your dye to the cactus juice. Pretty much the same method used for stabilizing wood.

Looks great Daniel. If it's any use to you, I've had success using a naturally orange wood such as Padauk to get orange stripes down my necks. It's of course a slightly different colour and lacking the flame figure but maybe worth a look if you haven't already considered it. I personally love the wood.

Love the orange color of that binding. I have heard that people have most success staining - oak and ash - especially spalted oak. Using maple was a challenge. I am curious if a dye might do the trick. Maybe no penetration is a good thing - resulting with orange on the side of the binding and natural color on the top which would be unique?

Daniel.. Think about how wood moves water through the tree.. Think of it as a bunch of tubes. If it's even possible, you would have to draw the staining through the end grains all the way through the wood. Just a thought.

Hi Robert, You’re right. I have done some more research, which I should have done before doing this experiment, and I agree with you. I think I should have used a proper vacuum chamber and a lot more stain. Maybe an experiment for another video.

Well the fretboards are looking great. Bummer about the stain orange not penetrating all the way through the maple. Maybe a softer wood. I'm pretty sure the stained veneer I buy is tulip wood.

Ha vakman, strak werk weer, hopen dat je je strips voor mekaar krijgt.

How would the binding strips look when glued on and cut down to the fretboard level, shaving down the top edge, orange maple orange? Looking forward to the next episode, thanks

I really enjoy watching your videos! When you get to the finishing part of your build can you please show all the steps? what sanding grits do you use? sanding sealer? water or oil based products? i'm doing my first build now and used gray fill and am wondering what is the best next step. mohagany body and staining. thanks in advance!

gray I mean grain fill

Je kan de maple binding toch naderhand kleuren met een penseeltje? Ik denk niet dat de lijm ver in het hout doordringt, aangezien de stain dat ook niet gedaan heeft.

I was hoping that the vac bag was going to work as I tried to make my own black veneer from walnut, I used a black tea wash, then a steel wool/vinager solution followed by several coats of a water based stain then black Indian ink followed by a black spirit stain even black liquid shoe polish, all to get the same result as you 🤦
