It's also that we reached the point where processing power isn't an issue even with the low end phones so its not about the specs anymore, it's about the other features and quality of life while using the phone. And well comparing idk last year galaxy s phone with something like galaxy S8, well if we exclude the memory and chip, the amount of features and exclusive stuff S8 offered back then (1440p infinity display, retina scanner, sd card slot, headphone jack and so on) is just higher. If i am not wrong the S23 even had plastic back. The only meaningful upgrade phones made in the last few years were multiple camera lens clusters and high refresh rate screens. But that is about it. Even flagships don't feel as premium as they did back then and are almost similar to many mid range phones.
the tech has not peaked, its just that we dont need the massive upgrades to doo our day to day tasks without hardware being a limitation, there is still good innovation in the flagship space.
@@oksowhat Imo all theses innovations are in the "fancy gadget" category. They don't really change the experience or what can be done with the smartphone.
I have not found a midrange this year that has sd card and isn't a downgrade of a flagship from the many years before. S20 FE 5G is not beatable at 200€.
I'm baffled by the stupidity of companies being surprised by declining smartphone sales. Do they seriously expect us to buy more when they keep removing features and included accessories while also increasing the price?
There really isn't a need to buy a new phone every year. Back then phones came up with meaningful arguments to change phones, now they're just slightly better camera, slightly faster processor and moving the camera bump elsewhere.
I think phone sales dropping is just natural at this point. The improvements to new phones are incremental and people largely have what they need already, so they just buy a new device when their old is getting too slow or isn’t supported anymore, which takes anything from 2-7 years depending on the manufacturer. I went from a XS to a 14 Pro with nothing in-between because I had no reason to get a new phone until my old one was requiring 3 charges to get through a day.
I used my Pixel 3a until it stopped getting security updates, then picked up a 7a. The 7a sucks by comparison. I need a case to compensate for the massive camera island and tiny bezels, so it's bulky as hell in my pocket. It has no headphone jack, and both bluetooth and USB dongles are unreliable and don't work nearly as well as the headphone jack did. I would just put a new battery in my 3a and use that again if I wasn't concerned about security updates.
@@mjc0961 Fuck headphone jacks there's adapaters from micro USB/USB-C for headphones that need to be jacked in. I don't have one yet but I bet they're reliable for the 10$ they cost.
EU just rolled out the removable battery mandate compliance. This should be a win for end users. I'm going to hold out until the new generation of phones with removable battery
I just replaced the battery on my iphone 11 pro for $69 instead of buying a new $1000 phone. Not buying a new phone for next two years when ios updates would stop on 11 pro
Let's look at it this way: back in 2013, a flagship phone like a Nexus 5 could be purchased for $350. Now, a mid-range device like the Pixel 7a could be purchased new for $500. Phones are too expensive, and as many Americans are soon going to have to worry about student loan repayment again, it isn't practical to waste $1000+ on the latest iPhone.
You do realise $350 back then means around $460 today? So, by all means, we’d be paying basically the same price, if not, marginally a bit higher, but, these phones are way more capable than they were 10 years ago. So, I would argue you’re still getting what you paid for.
@@hilal_younus I wouldn't. You do realize that making $10/hour back then means you're probably still making $10/hour today? In other words, making LESS money? Wage stagnation is real and a serious problem. Your argument only holds up if wages had continued to increase along with everything else so that $350 then is the same percentage of someone earnings as $500 today. It's not. $500 today is way more expensive for people than $350 back then. Also, phones are *absolutely NOT* more capable than they were 10 years ago. It's the same basic features of being able to make calls, browse the internet, take photos, and play media. But now we're missing basic features like expandable storage, removable batteries, and headphone jacks that we had in 2013. Today's phones are *_LESS_* capable than they were in 2013. I would argue that we're getting screwed in multiple ways.
But there's also the opposite. A cheap phone is totally usable nowadays because it comes with a 4000mah battery, a decent chip and 4GB of RAM, which is more than enough for web browsing, casual photos and watching tiktok many hours a day. Back in 2013 people were buying those shitty Smasnug Galaxy Y and Core with 1GB ram that barely ran the shitty bloated touchwiz rom.
@@hilal_younusyou do realise wages have barely grown since then right? Wage growth and purchasing power hasn’t kept up so in real terms it is much more expensive to consumers than just compensating for inflation
I long for the days of the mid 2000's where phones was in all quirky shapes and sizes, your mobile was an extension of your personality. No every single phone is a black rectangle, my wife's Apple is a black rectangle, my Xiaomi is a black rectangle, my parents' Samsungs are black rectangles, my brother in law's Experia is a black rectangle... Smartphones are bleeding boring now! I haven't upgraded my phone last year because why shop around for yet another black rectangle? I miss my funky Motorola V80, when I had it my dad had a V3 razor. They looked like spy tech, we loved those phones.
In South Africa, phones have become so expensive that they are now on 36 month contracts instead of 24. The kicker is they are still only under warranty for 24 months. And not having an included charger is maddening. So I keep my phones for as long as possible now.
Next, tell them about MTN sending those 36-month contract users advertising via emergency push messages. Imagine waking up to a full screen text ad from your network provider that drained your battery overnight because that message type stays on - keeps your screen on until you take action.
Phones have become incredibly expensive, leading people to view them as long-term investments meant to endure, rather than disposable, inexpensive gadgets that need frequent replacement due to newer models being significantly better and more capable than their predecessors. Companies have grown accustomed to charging exorbitant prices for diminishing levels of innovation. What outcome did they anticipate?
There is also another reason 😂 I for once can't be assed to read through tons of specs and models regularly so I just buy one and use it until it gets lacking, unsupported, the battery dies or I need a better one with new features - so to basically speak as long as I can avoid buying a new one 😂
Very interesting to see phone sales crashing all the way down to 2013 levels. Maybe there will be even more innovation in the industry now that this is happening?
Phone manufacturers are following Apple’s footsteps and now offering longer support. Phone costs are also more expensive so people are sticking with their phones longer. Until full satcom phones are mainstream, I don’t think any amount of minor “innovations” will bring this momentum back up.
LG is that company that itches to innovate but can't really land in business strategy. Come to think of it, they're the exact opposite of other companies that are all about business and remove chargers and headphone jacks in the name of "innovation"
@@RudenbehrNot true. The LG v20,30,40,50, and 60 were all great phones as were the G6,7, and 8. The LG velvet was a beautiful midrange phone and the Wing was very innovative. The problem with LG, was a lack of marketing. They failed to effectively advertise their phones.
You know, given how suddenly Madison disappeared after being prominently featured, I suspected something sketchy even back then so it doesn’t surprise me much.
@@GH0STST4RSCR34M yeah, but for almost everyone that has had a public facing job, we get _something_ in say wan show about them leaving. Here we got nothing i can remember. I’m not on the forums so maybe there they acknowledged it but in actual videos? Nothing
The old TouchPad was a Web OS tablet back in the day. It wasn't on the market for long and when HP decided to wrap up all of Palm's projects they fire sold the units at 100.00 CAD.
To me higher end smartphones have been getting WORSE (less innovation, no headphone jack, no micro SD slot, serialized parts/hard to service, etc.) I used to get so excited for smartphones releases now I hardly care. About the only thing that's got me excited are foldables but those are still exceedingly expensive and still half baked
Same, coupled with contiuing invasion of privacy: I feel more like my phone is less a tool for me to use, instead I'm the tool the companies wants to drain whatever they want and can through the phone.
@@Kaninballen yeah its true. The only hope is companies like Sony who still makes full featured flagships for enthusiats (with it's own flaws tho) or the new Fairphone which has insane support and repairability. The privacy tho, well that is a long fight, google and others have been at this for years, it's good that the awarness of people seem to be getting a bit better.

Bring back the SD card slot on the s24 or 25 ultra and I bet sales would climb to new highs. The reason why phone sales are crashing are because of less features and companies not listening to their fan base. 😒
@@mjc0961 I've never really had a problem using my wireless earphones when I got em but I don't see how it could hurt to add the headphone jack back along with replaceable do it yourself batteries. As I've stated: Phone companies are taking away features. All that does is tarnish and gives less reason to buy something.
With technology, it is more difficult, every year, to make significant improvements. Along with several years of support, you can see why phone sales have decreased. But, then again, there will always be that group that just has to have a new phone, every year.
Not so much that i think mate , but more that the smartphone makers dont help their own case by taking features away that where once always a standard , and now the price of phones is getting higher to a point of utter ridiculousness . My first high end premium galaxy phone in 2012 that was well equipped and with stuff/extras in the box was not a cheap phone , roll on 11 years , and samsungs most premium phone costs 4 times as much and comes with almost nothing in the box , and if you look at a lot of the other phones on the market , they are getting up there too . And as a consumer myself i look at the value of the current phones , they dont even come with a charger , no wired buds ( not even cheapys in the box ) , i suppose given their profiteering/meanness , we should be amazed they even supply a bloody cable with the phone .
@@mikldude9376something tells me that smartphone sales decrease is due to the Google/Huawei battle. I noticed how phones were selling less than it was in 2019. Trump made everything worse with their entity list. Make America great again, he said 😂😂😂😂😂. After that, Qualcomm, Intel, Nvidia, Google and Samsung have faced the worst losses ever and to add insult to the injury, they made Huawei their fierce competitor
I have been using the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 since 2018 😊, I bought it on the launch date for $825 but today similar model (S23 Ultra) costs a whopping $1510 almost double the price, yes I can still afford it but I am no more interested in spending this much money on a smartphones 😋
The thing is, why would you even upgrade ? I mean sure new model has more power and memory but does anybody even need that at this point ? even low end phones can handle anything you throw at them with no hiccups for a while now. And apart from that what do you get ? Removed SD card slot and headphone jack. Hell Note 9 even has a retina scanner and a beautiful 1440p high density display. It even has a multiple camera units which is like the biggest innovation in the last few years. It only lacks high refresh rate screen but that is more like nice to have luxury. Sure Ultra would still have better cameras and newer software but i mean is it really THAT dramatically better ? And worth the lost features that new phones don't have anymore for some reason ? Probably not.
Possible reasons: 1. Same physical design. Every phone is a rectangular block, so aesthetically the interest has waned. 2. Planned obsolescence. People are tired of looking for a new phone every 2-3 years just because the previous one's battery has died. 3. Price. The difference between 6GB 256GB and 8GB 512GB variant is not justifiable.
And flagship specs, not a low end phone with performance from 10 years ago. And enable the FM-Radio again. That isn’t even an extra chip or anything. It is built into the SoC but brands decide to disable that feature.
The HP Touchpad from 2011 would be the first webOS tablet, this was before LG adopted the OS. Great tablet to buy on fire sale and install the new Android 4.0!
Yep, I was gonna flag this odd remnant of palm's last gasp before their software was split into saleable parts. It's a shame really, web os was sort of ahead of Android and iOS in a few ways ways. There just want room for another player at the time.
I'd rather Install full on Linux instead of just another Android. OEMs ought to consider offering Linux OS options for their devices, break out of this Google Android/Apple iOS duopoly controlling the market. Forget about Microsoft Windows on smart phones because they don't know they are doing and more interested in services.
Well my 2013 galaxy note 3 cost 600$ had a stylus, had a user swappable battery (I got a 10000mAH battery) a headphone jack, more fingerprint resistant and shatterproof back cover, a micro SD card slot, and a USB 3 port. Name 1 phone that has all these features today.
I'd take my S22+ over the Galaxy Note 3 though. I had terrible experiences with swappable batteries. You can get a pretty good phone for $600 if you look for value phones or good deals.
Didn't it also have a IR blaster that could be used to control anything with a remote? I know my Note 4 did. I liked that phone so much, I kept using it untill 2020!
TouchWiz is much more sluggish and terrible than our current 1UI OS skin. Imaging hardware, computation photography algorithms and Bluetooth codec standards have improved dramatically over the last decade. Not everything revolves around hardware alone. Excellent hardware prowess and great software optimization work hand-in-hand. If what you've said were true then Sony should've been the best-selling mobile OEM in the market right now. Clearly, it ain't.
@@SamSardvery true. Removable batteries have been garbage and could barely made it to 3 years. And one particularity of removable batteries, as they deplete, the phone can shut down at 70 percent, while with non removable batteries, my phone can still run on 5 percent battery for hours. I sincerely don't want to use these removable batteries again. Non removable batteries are a pain to replace but I'd rather choose that option
not surprised about the smartphone slaes. felt for a time now that we reached peak smartphone. and that coming from an enthusiast that always wanted the newest phones back 5y ago. now im happy with a second hand iPhone 12 pro and dont see the reason to upgrade anytime soon. especially with the prices new flagships are going for right now. back a decade ago u felt like u need to get the next newest thing bc something was always missing, like not good battery life, really bad camera or bad display. now all of the flagships basically have all of these features down with minimal improvements.
@@mrmo3379 Everyone else hasn't had any meaningful innovation for well more than 5 years now, so by your admission Apple is just as caught up as everyone else.
Yeah and the fact that prices keep getting up and the the phones are actually becoming less feature rich (except the memory and power) than they used to be is just sad.
i think a lot of people are looking for alternate tech news right now, so glad I found you cause you've managed to get through so much news while being quick and informative, keep it up man!
Back in 2012-2019 I was HUGE on the best smartphones, always wanted the best specs and camera and everything. These days, I really don't care as long as I can do what I need to do without lag. The last flagship I owned was a Galaxy S7 Edge and since then I just go with decent $200 phones. Aside from niche use cases, a phone $80+ will get the job done, so I personally don't see why any normal person would pay $1400+ for a dang phone. Half the people who pay $1400 for the best phone don't know the first thing about the specs
That's actually great news about the Smart Phone sales, it means that this is an established market, where people wait for a purchase. Apple is stable because it's been around the longest.
Marton: I think that technically makes this the first ever webos tablet. HP TouchPad WebOS tablet: I am a joke to you? Marton: Yes HP TouchPad: Oh.. ok
Always my favourite day of the week when a Friday checkout video comes out! Still remember when they used to be RU-vid stories and I'm glad it turned into a whole new channel! Keep up the amazing work 💙
TechAltar and this channel trounce LTT if you ask me. Cult of personality RU-vid channels suck, the quality (if there ever was any) drops faster as they grow because fans will forgive a lot of nonsense thanks to their one sided romance with the RU-vid star.
I use my current phone for the exact same things I used my iPhone 4S for back in 2013, but my current phone has a lot more power to run spyware on me, worse games and an absolute crapton of features that I never asked for and are actively ignoring. If batteries never degraded I would still be using my 4S.
Gee I wonder why smartphone sales have been declining for a long while now? Could it perhaps be anything to do with the ridiculous price hikes - anybody recall when a flagship smartphone cost less than 400 whatever currency? The answer is simple, charge less, but it's too late for that now, no manufacturer will do that.
I think the reason why smartphone sales have been decreasing since 2013 is because almost everyone who wants a smartphone already has one, and as the technological progress is not as fast as before, there's less motivation to buy a new device every year.
Ikr, felt like a strange omission to show that graphic and not mention it but spend quite a bit on how Apple bucked the trend by only losing a little bit.
Pixels are insignificant in terms of volume sales. So naturally even a small uptick will show as a huge bump in percentage sales. Doesn't paint an accurate picture of the overall Android phone ecosystem
I agree with Vard. Google phones have never really done well overall in the Android ecosystem. Maybe there could be a rotation of customers. Apple users switching to Android or other Android users tired of their previous brand switching over.
Foldables are too expensive and still sensitive for mainstream to take over. Otherwise, it makes sense this rush for a smartphone to stabilize. It is purely impossible to have an always growing market. Only Africa might change a bit this trend, but they mostly buy much cheaper devices there. Same for stock exchange, how on Earth is possible to always expect companies to grow? For instance to expect Netflix or some other company to have more clients year after year after year and when this is impossible, their shares collapse. The system itself is corrupt.
I'm glad to see smartphone sales crashing. Smartphones have been terrible for years now. High prices, less ports and features, massive camera islands when the majority of users will only use 1 of the 15 cameras they keep thinking counts as innovation.
Honestly I would be happy with something that goes back to a 16:9 screen ratio so the entire phone can be smaller, take away the selfie camera because I never use it and don't want a hole in my screen, give me back the headphone jack and micro SD card slot, let me pop off the back cover to replace the battery easily, and give me 5 years of OS and security updates.
I am not surprised that phone sales are on a downward trajectory. Look at the price of them! There is very little value in the upper premium market. The unit volume may be the same as 2013, but one would imagine that the nominal margins are significantly higher. Although is not to everyone's taste. New premium value offerings from makers like "nothing" and others will help drive competition.
i'm pretty sure my note10 receives weekly payloads with that intent disguised as "security updates". at this point, it's significantly worse than it was when i bought it
noone is mentioning that the drama is maily just from linus himself but the rest of the company behaved relly well. The video they released is really nice. And if they will do just half of the stuff they talked about thats gonna be amazing. Imagine ANY goverment to act like this
But he's the face, the main draw (arguable), primary benefactor and the leader of the company (I'd argue the new CEO is the manager but even that has only been the case for a few weeks). So him acting like that is not a good look, for the viewers and especially the sponsors. Governments have to please and manage (not the best word) millions of people all with conflicting interests all while not being very personally invested in the best outcomes (their interests might even be at odds with most of the general populace). A 100 person company with direct feedback (views and sponsorships) can't be compared to a govt, maybe local govts but those are generally better than the centre.
This comment was typed using my Galaxy Note8 from 2017. It's about as perfect as a smartphone can be and has everything I need. The only issue with it is that the battery doesn't seem to work as well as it used to. I'll keep using it for as long as I can. The new phones are no better than the old ones, in some cases even worse. How hard is it to include a headphone jack on new phones? As someone who still uses wired headphones, I see the lack of a headphone jack as an absolute loss.
Apple has also been dropping devices from software support a lot earlier the past few years. The iPhone 7 could’ve ran iOS 16 and the iPhone X and 8 could’ve ran iOS 17. Some may say that’s plenty but the iPhone 6s got 7 years of support and meanwhile iPads with the same chipset as the iPhone 7 can run iOS 17 proving the phones could do the same. Plus the phones and iOS updates have basically been the same thing for the past 5-6 years so there’s literally no reason why those phones couldn’t have gotten the new iOS updates besides planned obsolescence.
The lowered phones sales are likely due to rising costs of living due to the war. Everything from food, gas to rent is getting more expensive. Phones are a simply not a priority.
Palm was the company that made WebOS first with their smartphone that had the slide down keyboard. When that failed ☹️ HP got with or bought Palm and they put out the Touchpad, which I got for a $99. Palm OS was great.
The sales of phones tanked due to their prices skyrocketed in last decade Flagship like LG G4 costed 400$ now you spend for iphone or samsung triple the price. I doubt inflation is 300%
I can understand removing the headphone jack to a degree due to how cheap and prevelant Bluetooth ones are, with no more dealing with internally snapped wires that you need to get just the right angle to work with, but removing expandable memory for flagships while having it in the cheaper models is just dumb...
If I could replace battery, and as someone that's in eu I will again - thank you eu, I'll be keeping my phone for 10 years if I don't brick it. I don't need your fancy pants incremental useless upgrades.
The moment I saw that LG briefcase TV the first time, I was confused like, is that a portable TV? Until I realized that it's actually really cool, and it's just another version of a tablet, but much larger
Phone sales are crashing because they're too freaking expensive. And even if you have the money, why would you buy one? There are absolutely zero meaningful differences between phone generations. Literally no one outside of tech enthusiasts and photographers care about a processor being 9.3% faster or the camera taking slightly better pictures. Make an actual innovation or improve on something that people actually care about, like battery life.
Well cause phones are now really dissapointing, ussualy with worse specs than theirs predecessors. no SD, no Jack and ussualy Snapdrag 695, which does not support 4k recording
Smartphone sales are declining that's why brands start crumpling their devices to force the users to upgrade their phones frequently. In the last two years display green line issue become very prevalent and yet brands don't give any damn to it
phones had become so expensive that people are reluctant to pull the trigger on a new phone. entry 5s is $200 but entry 14 is $800 and thats not even a flagship now. madness!
I‘m still using my iPhone 7, which I bought in 2016. There is absolutely no need for me to spend 800 - 1000€ on a new phone just to do the same tasks that I‘ve been doing on the current phone "but faster". I‘m holding onto this phone until the phone dies.
They force you to upgrade by ending IOs upgrades. Eventually none of your apps will work, because they force they force app makers to upgrade. My iPhone 6 made all my important apps unusable. They allow things like weather to still work.

Google is the only manufacturer that releases new phones while keeping the price same as predecessor. While Apple and other manufacturers just keep increases their price as they makes newer models. Even worse the chinese market is doing the same weird practice (highly noticeable if you look at Redmi K series, or Realme GT series, etc from 2018 vs now) and its a really bad practice.

In my opinion, apple stable sales is because of deliberately “slowing” them down through software “updates” so you can replace it yearly or at 2 years, keep in mind that the only 2 things that I can think of being “decaying” over time that need replacing is battery and screen, everything else is mechanical has no reason to slow down
has been proved ios updates significantly reduce over the years the soc clock speeds, so this make the device slower and also reduce Energy consumption so device its less harmed by battery wear
They should bring back the micro sd slot. That's the thing that is holding me back. I'm not gonna be a data mine for corporations. They keep removing tech that is actually useful. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Now the new phones suck.
Global smartphone sales are having a hard time because of one key factor - In the first decade and a half of smartphones being part of society, the advancements in technology moved forward in leaps and bounds, new features and functionality was forefront almost every single new generation. Now days, innovation is marginal, nothing surprises us anymore, so now less and less people feel the need to upgrade every year or two.
As a struggling normal human being I don't need a new phone that does the same stuff every 2 years..that's dumb. I know a bunch of guys that repair my phone every other year. Every 5 years I buy new. However I know them corporates will 'discontinue' support for my phone very soon. 😤😤😡
If they can't make a phone that I want, I can't buy a new phone - simple as that. After almost 3 years I'd like to replace my Poco X3, but there is no better phone than it for 200€. If I need to get a new phone, I might just get a new X3
The was a webOS tablet back many years ago. HP bought the rights from palm. Almost immediately after that HP did a fire sale for $99. The tablet was amazing for it's time. Even had a version of angry birds lol
Funny how she complains about a heavy workload when there's people here in my country working 12 hours a day plowing fields in blisteringly hot weather.
IPhone sales probably remained stable because their phones break the instant you sneeze at them, then you're out several thousand dollars. This was the number one reason I switched to Samsung and if you buy a flagship phone, chances are it's gonna last you for years.
The falling sales of mobiles are not caused by long-lasting phones but by falling quality and growing prices. Samsung and Apple feel this most as their devices are the most expensive and quality (from the highest) decreased the most.
I bought a Kyocera Digno 903KC today. Not only have the smartphones peaked in sales, but some people are replacing them with feature phones that won't take 80% of your free time.

I wouldn't go so far as a feature phone, but I've seriously been trying to declutter and simplify my digital life. Putting software on my phone and computer to strongly curb my social media use is among those steps.
Smartphones are no longer exciting. For a little while they were able to keep the excitement going by reducing bezels, improving display technologies like high refresh rate, etc. But ultimately, if you've got one smartphone you have used every smartphone from the last few years.
I’d still be using my 1st gen SE if the software was still being updated and I could get a new battery in it for a halfway reasonable price. The new phones with the fancy 3+ camera setups and the chips rivaling the power of a low to mid end laptop are completely overkill for what I want out of a phone.
@@Shay416 Exactly. I get it for gaming phones but otherwise ? I feel like the more powerful chips are only a negative these days. The battery size of phones doubled compared to 5 years ago but phones still last the same. Most of the power gets wasted by overheating chips that have crazy uncontrolled boost capabilities and what not to have better specs than the last year but, why. They shuld focus on making as efficient chips as possible now, it's not like we need more power in phones, there isn't a way to cool them efficiently anyway, the games that are there also can't even rival games from handheld from 10 years ago lol so why. I mean high refresh screans and efficient camera tech needs a lot of processing power but still.
Funny enough, it's the high-end market of smartphones that are growing while the low-end decrease. That's why Apple is faring better than the competition because they dominate the premium market.
