Phos is Worthless

At its heart, Houseki is about finding value within yourself, and your place within the world. While being a harsh thought, at the beginning of Land of the Lustrous, Phos doesn't bring much to their community other than biting sarcasm. Through the series, we are given the gift of witnessing their journey of self actualization. Phos doesn't always move forward, often taking several steps back. But there is grace in their failings.

Hey, I hope it wasn't too confusing, but I purposefully used both male, female, and gender-neutral pronouns throughout the video; as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the many different ways people tend to refer to Phos and the gems in general. I was planning on using fully gender neutral terms (they/them/etc.), but found it hard to write and have the script flow naturally. Sorry in advance!

Kamimashita: Warning, Wall of Text. Short Answer: The gems canonically call each other ‘he’ and I will make this point clear even though I’m aware it doesn’t matter, especially since the only confirmed female doesn’t talk like a girl. --- Long answer: The way the gems refer to each other is actually really simple, it’s the fans or those just getting interested in Hnk because it has a ‘gay non-binary cast’ or ‘cute gem girls’ that are making it difficult. The gems refer to each other in masculine terms, calling each other ‘kare’(he) and variations of Brother (Aniki/Niisan/Otouto), or referring to themselves as ‘boku’ or ‘ore’. Cinnabar and Bort are fond of very masculine Ore, while Phos and even Diamond use the boyish Boku. Only a few of them use the neutral ‘watashi’ to refer to themselves(Rutile and Jade), but even then plenty of men in anime use this version of I. The only time any of the gems are referred to as anything resembling girls is when Ventricosus calls them ‘Anoko’, which can be translated like ‘that girl’ or ‘that kid’. But based on how Aculetus calls Phos a ‘Bone’ and continues to more or less refer to Phos as an object, the latter is most likely true. But the gems are not male. The author herself doesn’t see the gems as male or female, but something like an in between, as the gems have (in her words) the top half of a boy (triangle, flat) and the bottom half of a girl(long legs, hips). Even so, they have no, *ahem*...equipment, with no kind of identifier for either gender. They are, without a doubt completely genderless. But part of the point of the story is that these kinds of things don’t matter. I’ve only just noticed this in its entirety, but Ventricosus doesn’t talk like she’s female at all. She refers to herself early on using ‘ware’(very formal) which while it can be used by either gender and is to my knowledge more like the Royal We, she also doesn’t call herself Queen(Jou), instead calling herself King(Ou). Later, Ventri uses ‘washi’(formal-ish) which is also masculine. This could possibly be chalked up to Ventri speaking as royalty, which requires formality, but it’s doesn’t explain her using King or switching from a masculine way of referring to herself as royalty to another masculine way of referring to herself as something of an equal. The only time she is referred to as female is by her brother Aculetus calling her ‘Older Sister’. Everyone so far in Houseki no Kuni talks in masculine terms, though only the gems so far refer to one another in any definable way, minus that one time Aculetus called Ventricosus sister. But people will continue to refer to the gems as they see fit. It’s kinda funny really, most of the real problem are those that vehemently declare that they refer to each other as ‘they’ and will fight you for it or don’t call them he because they don’t like it, even though they are themselves *sigh*, “assuming the gem’s gender”. The main translations also somewhat contributed to this. Early fan translations called them girls because (I’ve heard) they were copying a Russian translation that more or less referred to the gems as girls very chance they had, while later translators have used male pronouns like they do in Japanese. There was this one chapter that used ‘they’, and it’s more or less the reason I don’t use it to refer to the gems-it was way too confusing to read. While the manga translators at Kodansha decided to keep things completely ambiguous by calling the gems ‘that gem’ instead actual pronouns to cleverly hide any actual identifiers... Sentai took a different route. And still failed. Sentai decided to straight up call the gems ‘they’. Now, I understand what the translators over there were going for, but calling the gems ‘they’ in canon even though you had a viable replacement is kinda odd. They even called the ‘Phos’ in episode 3 she even though the gems probably wouldn’t even know what ‘she’ even means, not to mention it’s just weird how they suddenly went from calling a fellow gem ‘they’ to ‘she’ with no problem. This problem really comes down to how people want to refer to the gems, at the cost of disregarding canon, or devaluing it, as I’ve heard people say it is an allegory not for growing up, but for being transgender, which is missing the point, since beings who don’t even know what gender is wouldn’t even consider that. The story of Houseki no Kuni about finding one’s self, but it is only concerned with one’s personality, not gender identity.

The use of "they" in English is a direct request from the author. A statement from the translators: "The whole decision to use gender neutral pronouns for all of the characters came from the series creator. Before I even started I was told that they wanted to keep the characters essentially genderless by avoiding using “he” or “she,” which really only left the option of “they” because using “it” or something horrible like that was absolutely out of the question. In the Japanese script, the characters use what is actually the generic pronoun for “he” from time to time, and a lot of the characters use what are typically considered more masculine versions of the word “I,” which is something we don’t really have in English. But it can feel as though it has a bit more room for ambiguity in Japanese, whereas in English it feels like it very clearly assigns them one way or another, which is not what the creator intended." Sentai went the route that expressed the author's direct authorial intent.

Yeah, I switched them every paragraph, but some paragraphs were longer and not focused on Phos. I think it was an interesting idea in concept, but fails in execution. I think I subconsciously included more male pronouns since I started with "she", and refer to every other gem with female pronouns

I find it really sad that Phos had to literaly lose himself to stop being useless. Specially how sensei and antarc react to when he loses his arms, they are clearly more concerned about her than phos is even able to because she has really lost a lot of memories. It is tough but I think a lot of japanese ideals of fitting into society are in this series. even if she is hurting, even if shes broken she is of more use now and shes praised acordingly. Im not saying its wrong but it huts to watch, I really liked useless phos.
@Kamimashita
@Kamimashita 6 лет назад
I had this kind of discussion with someone earlier, and ultimately you're correct. The first season of Houseki is Phos trying to find their place, but I think they go about it in the wrong ways. Phos is clearly hurt from everything they've been through, and continues to lose precious memories due to their hardships. While Phos is more "useful", it's not something that can be sustained, and I think (I haven't read the manga so it might be more explored there) Phos has to ultimately learn to embrace her uniqueness... which means embracing her brittleness. Because one can be worthless in one aspect, but irreplaceable in another.

Then again that is a myth I'm glad is questioned here as it is interesting to see it shatter. "You should be yourself and you are special and your specialness will find a place to shine as long as you re true to yourself" that meme is ubiquitous all over media and it can be quite harmful. One is just too used to see it. Maybe one should change, maybe the world isn't yours to take and it doesn't care about you. Its at least interesting to think about.
@cheesypoohalo
@cheesypoohalo 6 лет назад
This is very interesting to me, because I actually prefer the new Phos, even though many people have been saying they preferred the old Phos. For me, old Phos had little drive and mostly lounged around, complaining about his situation without doing anything about it. Yes, he was cute and fun, but I often found the laid-back attitude a tad frustrating as the mysterious plot was being dangled in front of me while the protagonist was designed to be a lazy character who couldn't care less. Fast forward to the end. Phos is driven, capable, but in a spiral of (essentially) self-harm because he still feels useless (or not good enough), and is racked with guilt to the extent that he can no longer sleep. I've continued on from the anime and into the manga, and without spoiling too much, the mention of how Diamond is effected when Phos changes is very interesting, because other characters undergo similar heart-wrenching developments, all with Phos at the centre. So far it seems no matter what Phos does he will never be truly satisfied in himself, and with other tragedies mounting (Antarc etc) it seems Phos will begin to view more and more of the pain around him as his own. Err... I'm starting to see why people don't like the new Phos so much. The series is going in a very tragedy-oriented direction.

that's how growing up is guys, and this is why this manga's character evolution is so f'in good. it just nails it perfectly. i haven't read the manga enough to make connection with its events to event that could happen in the real world, but i know for a fact that there was no way this could end well, if phos didn't change, she'd probably be more calm, but if she didn't, a lot more people would have died... as for the usefulness thing, let's not forget that she did get a job before changing body, and while not very well, it was still working to an extent... just in the wrong way, but it still was, so she wasn't completely useless, especially when we consider these are gems not flesh beings, it is true to say that they are useful just being alive, as they are practically immortal, they are living encyclopedias of the world history and things for how they know it... which in a way or another, makes phos actually less useful like she is now on th elong run. or at least that's the case untile i read volume 7(or was it 6?), because fuck spoilers and fuck 4chan who did that to me(as well as the manga cover itself i guess :\ )

The society for the gems in Land Of The Lustrous is essentially a post-scarcity society. To top this off the gems themselves are also basically immortal. In such a society, such a world, these gems struggle with finding a purpose. For the majority of gems their efforts are focused towards defending themselves from the Lunarians and as such the seemingly most fulfilling jobs are the ones that contribute the most towards this goal. I shudder to think how life would be for these gems if the Lunarians didn't exist; because without these natural predators the gems of Land Of The Lustrous would probably really struggle to find meaningful work to do. I wouldn't be surprised if Sensei was maintaining the status quo on purpose just because the alternative would be much worse for his beloved gems. Cinnabar is a very intriguing foil for Phos, not just because they have to be isolated through no fault of their own, but also because Cinnabar accepts the pointless job they were given whereas Phos refuses to perform theirs. Cinnabar chooses to passively suffer in solitude, eternally performing a task that they know is pointless, whereas Phos chooses to actively suffer through change in order to find a task that they find fulfilling. Phos is willing to break, to lose their memories, to change their personality, to stop being Phos, if it means being able to feel useful. These are two very different approaches to dealing with the same problem; the problem of finding a job in a world that doesn't need you. One seeks to minimize the burden they put on others but also refuses to grow or change, the other seeks to grow up but at an expense to others and even themself. Land Of The Lustrous seems to advocate the active approach while also being firmly aware that both entail suffering. Ironically, when Phos is finally physically able to fight alongside the other gems, they decide that what matters most to them is understanding the world and why it is in the state it is in....a task very akin to the one Phos was originally given.

I learned a different lesson from LotL. If you change to fit societies expectations you will lose the parts of yourself that made you unique and loved. It showed so well in how cinnabar reacted to the changed Phos - cinnabar seemed disgusted, disturbed and disappointed. I think that chinnabar was the one that appreciated Phos the most, even if they didn't show it. Even Dia, the gem that expressed the most kindness towards Phos, seemed kinda... weirded out. Other gems seemed to appreciate Phos but it's pretty clear to me that they don't really appreciate Phos as a person, but more as a skilled warrior. Maybe it's just me but Pho's change really broke my heart. I felt very proud of them when they did some badass stuff, but nonetheless, it hurt to see them change from that careless cutie into a griefing, cold individual. They deserved so much better. I don't claim to know what the creators stance on 'change' is, tbh. Do they want you to fit into a mold or do they want you to be yourself? The message isn't clear, because the series seems more like a honest conversation about change than a simple answer - and yeah, I really appreciate that.

I see myself a bit like Phos at the start of the anime. And it terrifies me because I don't want to change as she did. She gave up parts of her (physically and psychologically) but it haven't made her happier.
@iota-09
@iota-09 6 лет назад
and i see myself more as her latter... not because she changed, but because of to what extremes she puts herself in front of others when it comes to sacrifice. in fact, i see so much myself in post-winter-arc phos, that it pains me to see what people think of her at that point of the anime/manga. though i guess that explains the mentality i got lately of "nothing is right for anyone, everything is wrong, yet people accept what's wrong as right, while others do the opposite in a convoluted mess of hypocrisy and logical fallacies" it just fucking sucks, don't get that point, just try to make yourself better for yourself, only then you should start thinking about others, if you don't, you'll end up as phos, as me, and you won't conclude nothing that you desired for. in other(longer) words, think about yourself first, but not from an outer perspective, just do what you think you want to do in any case for yourself and that in no way could hurt you or anyone else, (like for example: if one wants to be less fat to appeal to a girl, rather than doing it for "getting" her which would in many cases end up hurting the person and make the girl feel bad about it, think why not lose it for what you could do for yourself with it? living more time with whom you love for example, or maybe just to gain access to new experiences you would've had a hard time with or couldn't at all before; perspective change, point is still less or more the same, but it changes a lot the end result so that you woun't be affected by what others think of you about that action and eventual result of your choice, this makes the care go to yourself and to a mindset of "i wouldn't hurt myself when what i'm doing is making myself be protected and bettered by myself"... it's a bit complicated, though mainly because of how i am terrible at explaining stuff, read it at least 3 times) then think about what more you could do for others or for others accepting you ONLY after that, if you want, others are people with emotions too, and the same goes for you from their perspective. humans are complex creatures with even more complex emotions and state of minds, which is why concerning too much for others before yourself to too much an extreme will usually end up with a miserable failure.

Looking at how things progress on in the Manga, I'd say this analysis is pretty spot on. I find it interesting that Phos throughout the whole series indulges in self-harm, be it intentional or not. Though not in the conventional sense of the word, I'd still classify the actions of Phosphophylite as "self harm". Constantly putting herself into harm's way, Phos fully depends on her unique Inclusions as well as precious resources laying around to bring her back to life. To me it seems as if Phos is trying to say that his worth is directly proportional to the amount of times he had been "killed" when attempting to save the others-whether he was successful or not seems not to matter. Bodily harm with no intent on suicide? Seems like it. Though that being said, it seems that Phos is less sentimental than the rest. Perhaps it's due to her young age-resulting in fewer memories-that she doesn't mind forgetting a lot of things. However it's important to note that in the series we've seen a number of Gems overreacting to being chipped by the Lunarians-the Amethyst twins as well as Antarcticite to name a few. Consider the fact that all the Gems are very affectionate towards Sensei, it's kinda odd that Phos is the only willing one of the bunch to risk her memories of Sensei to "save" the rest. Even in her new and improved form, Phos is still seen to put himself into harm's way to save others though being unsuccessful more often than not. This seems to be a recurring theme in the Manga where Phos's sacrifices are done in vain, increasingly so as the series progresses. Knowing the risk of losing memories of Sensei, Phos still continues her recklessness in the battlefield-not once have we seen her react in such a visceral manner like the Amethyst twins or Antarcticite. Losing all her appendages, Phos is left with only the torso. That's only 50% of his original body by weight left that was originally him. At this point Phos is well over 400 years old. 50% of all her memories are gone. Surely some of her beloved memories of her and Sensei must have disappeared-we could only theorize as nothing has been confirmed nor hinted to in the Manga (aside from her increasing suspicion of Sensei, which plausibly could stem from the losing of memories of him). All in all, the way how Haruko Ichikawa depicts self harm is poignant. Like Phos, we need to proactively take steps towards changing ourselves-to grow. If it means hurting others and above all-ourselves, we should still seek painful experiences and moments of despair over the status quo. We lose a portion of ourselves in order to grow stronger, more healthier. We lose old friends to only lighten our burdens. We lose sentimentality of the past to gain insights over our actions and ourselves.

hibye201 I think she isn't so emotionally affected by the loosing of memories by the simple fact that. You can't know what you have forgotten. When Cinnabar said that Phos promised a "more Fun" job not just a new job I was really sad. I was like "yeah that was ol Phos all right, and she's gone".
@Halcypian
@Halcypian 6 лет назад
And to add to what you said, I feel that the world Haruko Ichikawa created really does suit the lesson embodied by our protaganist. I mean, holistically speaking, you can't have you're MC lose his head and then be fine afterwards.... because (manga spoiler alert) you took the head of someone else. This part is especially symbolic in that it's LITTERALLY taking in another person's perception/point of view. I mean, what better way to emphasize that than the scenario like this? Her arms and legs are of course a different story, but we can agree that each loss and gain is in some form symbolism to another bigger more well-rounded idea that we should learn. However, I do have to say that (although not anyone being wrong) this plan starts to falter farther in the series, and although maybe due to my misunderstanding of the story's goal, that down the line (near the Lunarian Contact) it does get a muddy in terms of if the lessons prior apply. I just hope that the story goes down a path that's both enjoyable and unpredictable (because who would want the opposite of those?).
@hibye201
@hibye201 6 лет назад
Mason Shen I totally agree with you on all your points. There's one that I'm still unsure of a stand yet-the whole portion on the symbolism faltering. There's only one major plot hole thus far-the lack of inclusions within Phos's new head. We've learned from the King of Lunarians that the gems they sent back are only mimics, fakes. They lack all inclusions that made the Gems gems. However, Sapphire's memories seem to be intact due to the trace amount of inclusions in the head piece. This is quite literally impossible to occur seeing how it breaks the rules the writer has made this far. However, if we apply your reasoning-that it should be seen more symbolically than literal-I guess the plot hole kinda makes sense? This is stretching your reasoning to the extreme limits but still seems plausible, no?
@HomocidicalBear
@HomocidicalBear 6 лет назад
(SPOILERS) It's not a plot hole at all. Ghost Quartz saved Lapis Lazuli's head when the rest of them was taken away by the lunarians. There were plenty of inclusions in that head, hell, they even speak to Phos in their sleep.

SPOILERS FOR THE MANGA!! "At its heart, Houseki is about finding value within yourself" Is it really though?, basically all that phos has done is because she got helped from so many people, she couldn't do anything until she got her new legs, now she could do something but not too much, until she got her new arms, now she could fight , but wasn't smart enough, so she ended up losing her mind and well her head..quite litteraly, her grand scheme of going to the moon and such was because of lapis, i'm not saying that finding value within your self is not one message of Houseki No Kuni, but i think a much stronger one is that we are who we are because of the people that surround us, and that there are things that can't be achieved by one person.
@emikotagahushi941
@emikotagahushi941 6 лет назад
Hmm, interesting. Although there are countless themes in Houseki no Kuni, as with any other story, I think finding value in oneself is just one of them, but an essential one, considering how Phos values herself so little she willingly gives herself up to King (the slug) to be used against the Lunarians and also contemplates chopping her arms off. However, you're right, she also doesn't seem to value the other gems much. She definitely cares about all of the gems, but she doesn't realize just how much they've done for her. She's lost a lot of herself and her memories, that may also be why. But overall, perhaps the very reason she doesn't value others is BECAUSE she doesn't value herself in the first place. It's like the idea that, in order to love others, you have to love yourself first, and she doesn't love herself. So for her to value the other gems when she can't even value herself, it makes sense. :o

tl;dw: Dia is best gem Actually though I figured the fight in episode 10 was less about Diamond proving her usefulness in spite of Phos and more her proving her ability to work independent of Bort. Despite being in the highest class, Dia's the weakest fighter of the harder gems, largely because she relies too much on Bortz. Diamond's still not really an effective fighter in this fight, charging Shiro head on until either of them shatters. Still though, it was a great moment of development for her, as she finally was able to work up the confidence to do something by herself rather than just stall until Bortz arrives.

(Manga spoilers) Phos literally wasn't Phos anymore in the latest chapters, the development team really took character development to a whole new level. Phos and the other gems who now lives on the moon have completely changed for the worse, they almost seem...uncomfortably corrupted, changing from caring and loving to self centered and wanting to crush the Earth gems. An example of that is Diamond, when asked to come with Phos to Earth so they can "Destroy the Earth gems and make adamant pray" she responded with, "I'm sorry, but I have a rehearsal for my concert." But it's shortly later revealed that he was only afraid of Borts as Phos threatens to bring him back to the moon. Following up on that, when Phos and his team arrive on Earth, Diamond picks a fight with Birds immediately, and when she was on the losing side, she yells at her Lunarian fans, "C-cheer for me! You worthless fans, you call that cheering?!" It just shows how a different environment can completely change such a sweet person to someone like that.

I'm really hoping we get to see a second season of this. If you've read the manga (attention, vague spoiler), you'll know that Phos' is becoming increasingly more complex and their search for identity mixes with different motives that are less focused on their inner identity and more about the outer, material conditions of their life and conflict with the Lunarians. I'm sure at some point, these two different themes will start to intertwine much more (Rutile's comments on the new Phos already alluding to that). All in all, Phos is a great character (or, with how much they have already changed, multiple great characters) that I feel really invested in. PS: Your language was clear and precise and I find that the constant usage of they as well as the switching between he/she are equally appropriate for HnK. Don't mind the comment section, I felt your presentation really worked well with your arguments.

yup, people complained he wasn't consistent, but try to remember when to use which pronoun when your mind say female, what you read says male and what you know is right is neither of the two, it is confusing and it would be for the gems too if thye had a concept of gender as deeply ingrained in their community as it is for us humans. also honestly, houseki is a nightmare for translators that have to translate in a non-gender-neutral language, especially when it comes to the names.

I believe that her negative changes also should be mentioned, her trauma, change from being naive but innocent and free to more skilled but at the cost of that innocence and freeness. That realistic growth is what makes Phos such a realistic and relatable character to me, and it's wonderful how they nailed it.

Like. Ffs. But, anyway. This is really cool! I love how you explained the progression of Phos' character. The only thing I kinda feel let down about in regards to the plot is how their original character basically completely vanished? I honestly think that it could have been handled better. orochimarujes See, now, I came off as quite harsh in my original comment with the way I said it, but I stand by what I said. And I'm proud of people who actually only mentioned it in passing (or just didn't mention it at all) and commented on the actual content of this video (because the whole comment section wasn't bad & there seem to be more[?] people who commented about the analysis). I wasn't at all confused. I heard every point made and it all sounded fluid to me. See, pronouns aren't the same as names. Although they're fairly important to one's identity/who they want others to see them as/how they see themselves, they aren't as important as names. Whenever a different character was being spoken of, their name was brought up, as many times as it was necessary to reinforce that *that* was the character being talked about. So it might be a bit more difficult to understand, but not impossible. And if that was the issue, people should present it that way rather than bringing up arguments for which pronoun *they* want used for the characters &/or whining about "omg just pick, is it a boy or girl¿¿¿???". It's a point that should be brought up in passing rather than being the only thing one remarks on for pure annoyance. Then again. It is the internet and people on it have that sort of "fuck all" attitude where they forget the positive points of something once they find something they think is "negative" about it.

New subscriber! :D It was really interesting hearing you break down Phos's character. I also didn't realize that the value in Phos as a gem is in how she breaks. :o That makes your ending lines mind blowing! Lol. Phos was already valuable; she was beautiful due to her fragility, even the Lunarians valued her - Cinnabar pointed that one out. And yet she didn't see anything good in that. She just wanted to fight and to be like the other gems. She only saw worth in what they did rather than finding a job that gave her worth in what she was good at - which would've been the encyclopedia. Thus, her rejection of herself led her down a path of breaking her limbs and having them be replaced. She broke, and it was beautiful seeing her transform and become stronger - but also beautifully sad because she lost parts of who she was. And yet, even in her "stronger" state, she continues to break - constantly - with the gold filling all of her cracks in an attempt to mend her. It's like the very thing she wanted to escape from, which was her fragility, she can't escape from despite losing so much already. If anything, she's more fragile now than she was before, both physically and mentally. She'll just keep breaking until, potentially, she loses everything of who she was as Phos. By then, she'll just be made of pieces of other things. :*c This epiphany is so sad... PS: Arararagi. Kamimashita! XD

The "suport of her friends" part is only really valid with Daimon, Sensei, Antarc and Caringorm at the start and the flesh people. Everyone else herrased, condecended, neglected, betreyed and belittled the shit out of Phos. And their growth steems more from a desire to be liked by their pears. Half the gems basically wanted her dead, because they just thought a minor inconvenience like Phoss was too much to handle. And in the manga, they go as far as actually literally torturing them. I cant bring myself to say that the majority of the gems weren the catalist for Phos's growth because of suport. We see phos change so much when she realizes what it means to lose (legs, a friend, childish behavior, etc). We see her be jealous of her past self. I’m sorry, but why do you continue to switch between “He” and “She”? Is the gender unknown or is it just typos in the script?
@RuinousCat
@RuinousCat 6 лет назад
The gems have no gender. Some people argue using male pronouns because that was the translation of the manga and how all the gems in Japanese use male pronouns. Other people think "They" since then there is no gender but it can get confusing when talking about multiple characters. Finally are the people who use female pronouns because of how they look (top half is supposed to be male looking) and sound and refer to them as "she". It is a tough one.

I feel bad for phos, it isn’t phos’s fault that she end up being almost alike to a monster, it’s true that phos let her thoughts of becoming useful control her, due to losing parts of her body, her memories became blurry, she also forget about the promise that she made with cinnabar, everyone misunderstood phos, making her not knowing what to do anymore, it isn’t her fault even if she make a ton of mistake

Another great video! I might suggest using singular "they" to refer to Phos though. The translators and mangaka all have deliberately insisted that the gems are genderless, and use genderless pronouns. You waffle between pronouns here, and the inconsistency is a bit grating. I know you mean no venomous intent, but it needs correction. Embrace that singular "they"!

Despite being genderless the gems themselves tend to use masculine pronouns when speaking to one another. I don't think they have a proper concept of gender so I think it's fair game to refer to them any which way.

Willy Wonka So, the original creator of the series doesn't know the characters she has made, but somehow, for some reason, a random person within this world knows? You think too highly of your own opinion on the subject.

Ok we need to stop obsessing over these pronouns Just use masculine pronouns. That’s what the gems use in the manga. They are always referred to with masculine terms. Whether you agree with the gems being male or female or neither, as far as language is concerned, they all use masculine terms.

Okay, I'm sorry, but this is bugging the shit outta me, why are people going back and forth with addressing the Gems as either gender when in reality they have no gender? In Futurama most Robots identify themselves as male or female depending on they're personality, and voice, even though Bender is gender-less, everyone address the unit as a Male because of the behavior the machine displays. How is it not the same for the Gem People? We obviously have only 1 male type character being the Sensei Adamantine, while every other Gem seemly portrayed as a female, be it in physical shape, personality, or style. Keep in mind these gems are also hundreds if not thousands of years old, so personalities change or evolve over time.

Japanese has no true gender neutral pronoun. They most likely use male pronouns since it's the closest possible to genderless, but the gems themselves have no concept of gender

thank you kami, thank you. if they had genderless pronouns, they'd use genderless pronouns, if they had pronouns for objects too(like italian) and gems were a female pronoun, they would've used female pronouns, that's just how it would've been, that's just how oblivious to genders the gems are.

The gems bodies are not female. Their upper body is male and the lower body ( they don't have genitals so we have to assume just the butts are ) female . The creator of the manga stated this herself so it's not just me spouting nonsense. And not all the gems act female. Yellow diamond, bortz, Morganite ( if you dont count him/them as the tomboy type ), Cairngorm ( Spoiler for the manga ), I guess antarc, Peridot ( who doesn't get much if any screentime ), and Padparadscha are examples of gems with masculine mannerisms and personalities and with the exception of morganite and Bortz ( until spoilers later in the manga ) male-ish presentation. If your point is that because you think they lokk femwle and sound female ( Yellow Diamond doesn't sound female at all ) then they should be regarded as female doesn't work. Also sounding female doesn't mean being female since the existence of male characters that have female voice actors and sound feminine voices exist. Also, the gems can fluctuate between gender presentation. Phos has done it before and began to look more masculine post-hair cut though personality wise Phos was always bratty and boyish.

I like Phos because the anime/manga captures what it's really like to be worthless by nature, and although she grows throughout the series and breaks a shitton, she carries on. She never gets godtier powers from overcoming one obstacle like most underdog characters do. That's a downside to the other gems in the series, because they're so used to having a set purpose and being worth something, that when they're broken it makes them question everything.

1:40 Oh! I was under the assumption that "foil" was more or less synonymous with "antithesis," but it's more like "compliment" or "accent" isn't it. Interesting (and entirely appropriate) bit of word history as well, nice touch.

@Kamimashita
@Kamimashita 6 лет назад
I'm of the opinion that it doesn't hurt or harm anybody, considering that the gems don't have gender. If the show was some allegory for trans individuals yes, but Houseki doesn't delve into that area.
@iota-09
@iota-09 6 лет назад
no, it's just that people want consistency, there's who wants it for gramar, whom for political correctness, others because "that's how they said it in japanase"(afaik, japanase doesn't have gender neutral pronouns) and other just because that's how they see the characters and want everyone to do the same. in the end, is stil doesn't fucking matter as they are still genderless, and that is shown by how they have so many traits both girly and manly and nobody cares in that community.
