Great points on mounting strobes. For tip 2, you could also look for a baby drop down pin.

Thanks for that hack Joel! I've spent days trying to solve this exact same problem. 3 years later, your expertise is still of great value. [ I'm a subscriber.]

Joel, do you think this size of beauty dish is good for a editorial. Photographing a couple? I am having my biggest photoshoot. Shooting a wedding styled shoot for the high end wedding magazine. Finally they gave me the chance! Tons of decor and flowers will be there. It is in hotel, in a ballroom. What would you use to lit the couple for full shots. I always use my bare speedlites and one 26” rapid box. But I know this won’t be enough. I would appreciate your advice.

Joel, you have better balance on that C-stand then I do in my life.

I see alot of photographers miss the whole concept of a counter weight... if you loosen the center wingnut, it should stay balanced while unlocked. If not, slide to the left or to the right until it's balanced.

Great hack. And I have owned a grinder for years. Shame on me for not thinking of it. Thx Joel.

You could attach your strobe to the stud in a super clamp, clamped to the boom.

LOL....I've done the same for years; Manfrotto and Avenger grip gear. It's like, wtf?; how could they NOT do it at manufacture? A boom pole REQUIRES a flat face to "lock" it.

I swapped my Manfrotto/Avenger stands for my Kupo C stand/Runway roller, Hex Grip Arm & various grips/clamps as well. Best thing ever. I'll never go back to Manfrotto or Avenger. So much easy & better to use & at very reasonable prices. Mine will last forever. I wonder why more of the pro's are not using them or aware of them !!

One of the most stressful studio shoots I ever did was with that boom, an einstein and a 7 ft umbrella (which needs the flash canted up as opposed to down with an octo). No way that was happening without a cast iron dropdown baby pin. 12ft in the air and 20lbs counterweight. Fun times. Not

Have no idea why all end spigots on stands DON'T have a flatspot! Rotation from torque weight such a common problem!

Joel, In your video “Photo Hack Episode # 1” What’s the name of your light stand company and what model number is that stand ? Whenever I walk into B&H I never see that quality of a stand!

Although with more effort you can do the same with a metal filer :)

Hello Joel, do you grind Flat on your Baby Pins /Long 5/8th Pins as well ? as I noticed that it is just off on some of my Godox mounts

As a professional craftsman, the grinder you use is one of the most dangerous. There is a lack of security around it against your hands! NEVER use one such if there is not a very special reason for this! As you say security first!

Also never use gloves or have loose clothing with any spinning tool!!!!!

I used to work in a foundry with 3 phase grinders that lack of guard is cringe! I have seen a fellas hand slip off the side handle & go straight into his upper leg it cut so fast through leather spats it was insane 😢

Jan Laugesen - also took off the tip of my finger with a grinder like that. Only took a fraction of a second.

In such situations, these stands were meant to be used with a grip head and baby pin attached to the end of the boom arm. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bN3I1xzjQZM.html

Question: Why the grip equipment producers don't produce the boom end / spigot with a flat side ? In fact, as much as I know, Avenger is the smartest company I guess for they have a better solution that grinding: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/124750-REG/Avenger_E250_E250_Long_Double_Stud.html

Do you also use a “baby Drop down Pin” many brands? It is cheap...

Eye and ear protection are definitely a good idea, but NEVER WEAR GLOVES WITH GRINDERS! If it manages to snag your glove, it’ll suck your hand right in.

Maybe they should make some baby pins with the flat surface already, uggh!
