You do not have to delete subs with satellite trails I use pixinsight batch preprocessing script and sigma clipping will remove the trails .So you do not have to delete a sub with satellite trails pixinsight creates the rejection map.Your deleting good data you do not have to do that.

Well done Helena. It's good to voice your opinion as an amateur astronomer. I'm all for raising awareness on this issue. I've also been capturing pictures and videos on starlink satellites and will release these videos this week as well. Clear skies!

Great video! I’m hopeful that we will be able to adapt and continue imaging. I envision quick f2 scopes and software that knows where the satellites are. The good news is there is no shortage of brilliant people in this hobby! Clear skies

Lets move to mars! No light pollution and Just a few satelites! But the lack of breathable atmosphere and the fine dust would make some problems...

Starlink is the hell for us night sky lovers and astronomers, hope that project will fails. Even if those satellites has ion engine to deorbit, they have experienced lot of malfunctions and so they are going to stay in orbit for much more time even if they're shut off...

I've been seeing so many trains of these things recently! I think it will bring many developments in sigma clipping on the side of astronomers.

Give it a few years, and this won't be an issue what so ever. They're nearly invisible when in their final orbit, when also after about an hour past sunset. Future satellites will have even less reflective surfaces. And finally - stacking the sub exposures will eliminate the satellite trails that you would get in a single sub exposure.
@arjenbij
@arjenbij 4 года назад
Why would they be invisble at their final orbit?
@I_Spaced_Out
@I_Spaced_Out 4 года назад
@@arjenbij the solar panels are pointed away from earth, and hidden behind the satellites body. Additionally, next generation satellites will have shades installed on the under side to block the small bit of light that does hit that part of the satellite. Finally, they'll be farther away. Objects become dimmer when they're more distant. The dimming follows the inverse square law, so if they double the altitude after launch, the satellites under belly will appear a quarter as bright.

Hi Helena, nice little video about the starlink sat's. Yes i agree that they are a pain when imagining but quite eerrie to watch as they traverse our skies. A few nights ago i was out with a light weight set up (star adventurer / nikon D5300 / nikkor 35mm lens) trying to capture some Lyrid meteors, unfortunately no meteors flashed through my fov but several satellites did. I loaded the 100 60s lights with associated darks & flats into DSS and stacked as normal. All the satellite trails were omitted from the final stacked tiff file. So I am guessing DSS rejects these frames during the hot/cold pixel math algarithm? Marc
@HelenasAstrophotography
@HelenasAstrophotography 4 года назад
Hi Marc, I'm not sure on that one! I don't stack satellite images (or meteor images) I just shoot single frames. When it comes to nebula I take them out before I stack. I would recommend researching in some astronomy forums! That's a new one for me too. Clear skies :)

Lol u and I wear our hair almost exactly the same, btw I’m so confused and idk why the hek I need to use a red light next to my scope... is it because it’s a darker color or something or something else? I’m kinda stupid :( also I don’t think we will be going to mars any time soon unless we get a significantly faster rocket or some sort of gravity enduring platform... 1, it will take a while to get there... maybe more than 10 days (if we find a way to travel at light speed then we would get there in 20 hours... I had the numbers once but then I forgot)... by then our astronauts will be extremely weak and maybe not be able to carry their own weight unless we find a way to “work out” in space, but then nobody is there to help them unless we send robotic... whatevers with them or before them. 2... aliens 👽 Again don’t listen to me because I’m stupid, I’m just kinda stating what i think which is possibly not the smartest thing to do... btw i subbed

Hey hey! No I love hearing people’s opinions. They are all extremely valid. It’s much, much better to use red lighting rather than white. This is because in the dark, your eyes have to adjust to be able to see stars in the sky (as they are only used to seeing in day time). If you were to put on a white light for example, it would ruin your seeing and your eyes would have to readjust. Red light doesn’t damage seeing, which means you can have a happy night of imaging and see where you are going at the same time :)

Interesting topic, I live in New Zealand at almost 46 degrees south and I rarely see any satellite trails in my images and I almost exclusively image in narrowband with 15 minutes subs. Must be one of the benefits of being in such a lightly populated latitude?
@shivercanada
@shivercanada 4 года назад
Why they didn't make them black and stealthy is beyond me. In Deep Sky Stacker they can be automatically removed but with every sub having them soon, might mess up the images
@triestwildriders5922
@triestwildriders5922 3 года назад
Recently I've read that blackening too much their satellites could cause too much system overheating due to sun heat, while a brighter covering helps to reflect part of thermal radiation, unluckily 😫

Hi Helena: 42,000 satellites is just the beginning. Once China, Russia, India and other countries get involved, who knows the amount of satellites will be orbiting the earth. While the satellites should burn up in the atmosphere, there have been satellites and space stations that have made it to the ground, Skylab debris landed near Australia and a radioactive core of a Russian satellite landed in Canada. While I am confident astronomers will still get good photographs, we will get far fewer good ones. BTW, love your Doctor Who Tardis shirt! Long live The Doctor! Lastly, glad to see Amy Astro featured you on her last video.

We need to get our telescopes out into space! Also Starlink satelites will burn up in the atmosphere definitely. they are small compared to skylab and other stations.

Very nice shot even though it was not want you wanted! Few nights ago I think I saw one going west where Venus was a hour or two ago. It's ok to get them in shots when camera on tripod. You managed to photograph the iss the international space station with Camera? As for them in shots with deep sky.photography it would be annoying when trying.to photograph an object like the north American nebula near Deneb in Cygnus. You.think it'll ruin alot of shots when more of them are launched. Some believe man never been on the moon. Hopefully man on Mars will happen in next 20 years. I always thought back in 1988 when I first got interested in astronomy there would be a lunar base by 2005 but hasnt happened yet. Be nice when man goes to mars and then eventually a Martian base. You think it will happen in next 50 years? Clear skies!!!
