Photographer’s open-floor glass home perches over Canadian lake

To create a photography studio with maximum daylight, Larry Williams built a glasshouse. Doubling as a boat garage (the lower floor), it hugs the lake's edge. Viewed from the inside, the outside world tumbles in: the wake of a powerboat ripples up to the window, kayakers wave as they pass, a child jumps from the dock.
Toward the back of the house, granite invades the view: the home is built on top of the Canadian Shield- a swath of ancient rock stretching across half of Canada. Williams speaks proudly of the 300 million-year-old limestone and 3 billion-year-old granite outside his door.
To heat and cool the home, architect Pat Hanson relied on a geothermal system: tubes of water snake into the lake to benefit from the lake floor’s nearly constant year-round temperature. In summer, the water in the closed-loop system is cooled by the lake and in winter it is warmed. The granite floor acts as a heat sink to slowly radiate the sun’s energy through the house during the evening. The white roof reflects light and heat to keep the place cool during summer.
To create a home inside four walls of glass, Hanson placed the domestic functions inside a floating cube supported by steel beams so as not to touch the walls. Downstairs, it houses the kitchen and guest bath and upstairs, an open bedroom. The stairway is bathed in Corian which continues upstairs with a Corian bathtub and bed structure doubling as sculpture. Large sliding fritted glass doors close to provide privacy for the mezzanine bedroom, though are typically left open to allow for natural ventilation.

I waited a long time to edit this one because I was afraid it would be misunderstood. I too love the cozy cottage feel, but at this location this home makes sense. From the inside, you don't notice the glass or steel beams supporting it, but you feel a part of the landscape. As we filmed, we could have been out on the dock watching my kids swim or sunning on the granite. The walls or any outdoor/indoor barrier nearly dissolve.

No need to justify. This is a thoughtfully planned and relatively modest home compared to the gross mansions going up across Ontario's cottage country.

New buildings are supposed to look as they are built today and can live hopefully a very long time. I can never understand why building something to look as if it if 100 years old. Doesn't make any intellectual sense at all. Being one with nature has nothing to do with old looking architecture. I do respect some people like that style and I also like old buildings. But when building a new house... I also sometimes see comments like "finally a house with personality" when the interior is cluttered with stuff. Now see, thing is, some people doesn't need a lot of things. Some people doesn't need a lot of colour. They simply has a lower mental threshold. The interior still reflects more than well this person and probably has more character than the cluttered bohemian chic house often referred to as warm and personal.

One of the more Graceful & thoughtful executions of the glass house design. His love of granite on the site & depending on the lighting, I bet he can create some stunning shots from the 'pod' of a treasured subject. Imagine sunrise & sunsets as daily cornerstones. The aurora or moon rise or timelapse of the milky way. This space is a photographers paradise indeed.

The forest side of it is equally beautiful..! Imagine you turn your chair at one side and see the blue water and turn 180 degrees to see the beautiful lush greens with the rocky surrounding.. I mean it could have been a good contrast..! So they missed the other half of it. 3. Its none of my business but.. With the hygiene view point. Toilet is really at the wrong place. 4. I love, love, love, love this house. Of course I love, love, love the water anyways. We had a houseboat for over 30 yrs that my Dad, Mother, & I built w/an engine & we would go cove out over the weekend. Man I miss it. My step-mother #witch, sold it after my Dad passed away. She just wanted money. She didn't care that my Dad worked hard for it & he told her it was supposed to go to me & she went under my Dads back & sold it. But there's karma & it will bite her back. I just pray. Even though it hurts, bc it was a nice boat & it was one of the last project that we as a family worked on before my parents got a divorce. She can't take the memories away from me for sure. And we made a lot of memories of that boat as a family. Great video thank you for sharing, Chris from Missouri

I appreciate Larry's love of the landscape. Clearly viewers don't like the stark design in the natural landscape. I'd say the building was designed from the inside-out. In that way, I think it works.

I don't see it as stark at all. Rocks are jagged as well as smooth. This fits in well. It doesn't impose itself on the landscape.

Wow, I don’t know how you guys get any work done. That view is heaven on earth. I’d be using table rock as my meditation rock. The material selections I agree are sublime, timeless, functional and durable. More importantly, they create an environment of sheer PEACE….. For feng shui harmony in the master, I’d add a luscious raw peice of waxed and buffed timber to ground the bed and separate the water (bath) dampening the relationship also backing the loo and vanity as well. The granite landscape is so interesting offering a journey over the property…not something most properties can offer. Your lake house jewel is a contribution to architectural history. Well done guys.

Toilet could have been added next to the shower room - I'm not living there but it is weird. Even with IBS - a few more steps into the shower area for the toilet is just not a big deal ...it really ruins the ambiance ....although they may view a toilet in the bedroom as "ambiance." I bet those rocks are slippery after rain or snow ...and he is no spring chicken. Maybe a banister on one side of the rocks for balance...that could be one hell of a fall and hit hard enough ...fatal. Hope they have help cleaning a ton of large windows - a constant maintence issue -at least for me. Other than that, I love the idea of this home and it's simplicity.
