In this video, I photograph red kites in flight at Argaty, Scotland. Each day they feed red kites at Argaty and they have a dedicated photography hide to capture the action from.

I'm originally from Norway, but I have lived in Scotland since I studied wildlife biology a long time ago. In Scotland, I’ve worked as an ecologist and occasionally still do some freelance ornithology work. I have a passion for the natural world and I believe it’s our duty to keep as much wildlife and ecosystems alive for ourselves, for future generations and for nature's own sake.
Combining my passion for wildlife with an obsession for photography has been my ultimate pursuit for the last couple of years and I’m enjoying the journey more every day.

They look and sound a little bit like our Black Kite in Australia. So fantastic to see them on the increase as they are magnificent birds.

Great video clip, We in Perth Western Australia have the Whistling kite, very similar to the red kite but bigger. We are lucky we don’t need to feed our kites, they are very good hunters, and are not endangered. I have the exact Canon gear including the 1x4 extender, great gear for BIF.

Hi Espen. I have been to Gigrin several times now and in fact I'm there again next week (rain forecast😟). I have found you get some great shots by setting up on a tripod and focusing on the food, moving slightly to the direction of swoop and using a remote release to stand back and watch them flying into my 'zone'. More success and much more comfortable! There are some dead branches in the tree to the right where you can get some great perched shots with a 500mm and extender on a cropped sensor camera. BTW, my 80d has all focus points with the version 3 1.4X extender - I didn't realise you only get one with the 7D2. Interesting....
@EspenHelland
@EspenHelland 4 года назад
Good tip! You must have got some cool actions shots from that :) I think I misspoke in the video, I meant to say I only use one point when shooting, but when the extender is on that point is locked to the middle.

Thanks for sharing Espen. As a child, my uncle took me down to Tregarron in mid wales in the mid 70s to see them for the first time. At that time there were only a handful of pairs clinging on and I remember seeing my first one flying across the road in front of our car and I thought I was going to burst with excitement. I work in mid Wales now and see them pretty much on a daily basis, its so good to see how well they are doing and I don't think I'll ever tire of watching them. 👍

@@danieljohnston5306 Yeah, didn't look like they minded the person feeding too much. They're so used to it now that they probably find it quite safe. Think it's more like Roger said: for the visitors. If all visitors would wander over the grass where they're fed it might have been a different story.

Great vid Espen. I went to Gigrin last year in Wales and it is amazing how many birds you get at these places. It makes it difficult to photograph because you just don't know which way to look. I found the best method was just to pick one bird and track it . I live in Northamptonshire and we are lucky enough to get the Red Kites overhead on a daily basis in the area. They are stunning birds!
@EspenHelland
@EspenHelland 4 года назад
Thanks KG! I agree, picking a bird is definitely the way to go, but I would often look at all the birds without my camera and try to pick the ones that looked most likely to either grapple, at least fly towards me.

Red kites don't expand their territories much, may be 5-10km per year as the population grows. Provided there is suitable habitat!
@EspenHelland

And providing they don't go on habitat where they're persecuted. Unfortunately still a big problem in the UK.

I noticed that your ISO shifts a bit between shots, but your aperture and shutter speed remain fairly constant. Were you shooting in Manual mode with auto ISO? I enjoy photographing birds in flight, but struggle with maintaining proper exposure when the background changes from bright sky to dark trees. Was wondering what exposure mode the pros use :)
@EspenHelland
@EspenHelland 4 года назад
The light was relatively consistent so I had ISO set to manual. If I remember correctly I took a reading from the brighter grass, but I would make small adjustments after taking some test shots. In the beginning, I would fine-tune it to leave detail in the sky when taking flight shots, but I realised that the sky was very dull and didn't look so good so I was happy just blowing out the clouds and leaving it white. I think you learn exposure faster by setting it manually, but of course, it's easy to mess it up as well and I didn't get them all right :)

Hi Espen another great inspiring vid and put another reason to go to Scotland Holiday .One question would keep camera pointing at food resource or try focus one one bird as it circles before diving down
@EspenHelland
@EspenHelland 4 года назад
Thanks :) Yes, but I didn't like the composition where the food was that much, would probably be good for some action shots though. Focusing on one bird was mostly my approach, but still tricky, as the speed they accelerated when diving was really fast!

Hi Essen. Question kinda related to this video. I know you’ve mentioned using roadkill to attract birds of prey, is there an alternative if you’ve no roadkill? I can’t really store roadkill at home so ltd be luck of the draw finding some on the way to a shoot. Wondering if shop bought meat would work for instance.
@EspenHelland
@EspenHelland 4 года назад
I think it would work, meat is meat. Might be a bit pricey though depending on how long you're going to feed for. If you can I would introduce the hide to the area for a while before you start feeding to increase the chances of anything going for the food sooner.
@Yosser70
@Yosser70 4 года назад
Espen Helland Thanks for the reply mate. That’s interesting, I was wondering if you used roadkill because it was a visual thing, and the birds recognised it as food more readily than say a chicken leg. Would love to see a video on how you approach attracting birds like this going over locations and tactics etc. Had the chance to take a class with Andy Rouse years ago where he talked about this sort of thing a bit but all I can remember is to stake the meat/ bait down or something will carry it off! lol

Espen, I love your videos but I have to say that this isn't really wildlife photography. I understand that this is a rehab facility and that's a wonderful cause and in this case I accept that it is warranted. There seen to be a lot of videos lately of people photographing baited raptors and in my opinion it is an unethical practice. Not surprisingly most of the photographers never say they are using bait. "I am not aware of any birding or wildlife rehab organization that supports baiting. However several oppose it, including the Raptor Center, Owl Foundation, and Raptor Education Group. Also the ethical guidelines of groups like the American Birding Association and North American Nature Photography Association strongly discourage activities which interfere with a bird’s natural behavior."
@EspenHelland
@EspenHelland 4 года назад
Valid point. It's an area I'd like to investigate a bit further, I certainly wouldn't want to have an adverse impact on wildlife because of my photography. I the cases where I've tried it before I've picked up roadkill and placed it near my hide. As thousands of birds of prey are killed by traffic in the UK alone I would think this is beneficial to bird populations on the whole. I can see that if you do this from one location over long periods of time though birds can become habituated to being fed there and maybe start to depend on it.
