Wonderful images of a magical place 👏👏 beautiful filming too from the drone, from your last location I preferred the second shot. The images at the end are fantastic well composed and edited.
Love your work, Chris. My fave is the snow-covered beach with smooth blue water with mtns in background...spectacular! Hard to choose a favorite, really
So this is what you've been up to. ;) Absolutely beautiful area Chris and thank you for sharing your experience with us. Most likely a location I'll never make it to so having all of this detail is quite special.
Brilliant video. Myself & 5 friends are going in February so great to give us a peak of weather to expect. Love the image at 30 mins of the fence & building 👌👍
thank you for this video Chris. I am going to Lofoten Islands in Feb and this was really helpful for an amateur photographer like me. I was debating whether to take my 70-200 with me or not but after watching your video I decided that I would. Very good shooting tips in your video so thank you for that. I promise I will try the fried cod tongues too. Take care.
Thanks Hank! If you can afford the space and weight in your bags I think you'll be glad to have that 70-200. Of course I shot primarily with my 16-35 on most things but as you saw there were definitely lots of opportunities for a long lens as well. Best of luck on your trip and I wish you good light and conditions!
Chris I really appreciate this video as I had a great time in Lofoten and your tips in the video were super helpful. I wish I had room for my drone too but had too much gear as well as visiting family in Sweden for week added more luggage than I anticipated but overall I had a great time. Next trip Iceland. Great work you do here. Thank you.
Fantastic video, what an experience, definitely a location to add to the list! Some stunning shots Chris, difficult to pick a favourite but your 400mm shot of the mountains is definitely up there!
Thanks Chris! It really is such a beautiful place up there, I can't recommend it enough. That backlit mountain shot was super unexpected but I was really happy I had that 400mm with me!
Great to see you back in the screen. It looks like you had an amazing trip and captured some incredible images. I think I’ll leave the cod tongues to the professionals.
I admire your dedication. Days traveling (there and back) to stand around in the snow and ice. You where very productive, I especial like the long lens shots of the atmospheric mountains in the golden light. Nice to see you back. Looking forward to your next video 🙂
Very nice - glad I came across your channel. You're easy to listen to, and I really like all your captures. For such a potentially bleak environment, you took my eyes to places that surprised me, love the drone shots, and a few of the close up captures just looking into the incredibly crystal water and shallows life. Brrrrrrr
Looks like you had a super productive week Chris. Too many beautiful images to pick one favorite. I enjoy going on these group photo trips; such great camaraderie and experiences.
Thanks Larry! I definitely agree. That was one thing I didn’t expect - being with a group of like minded people from all over the world was truly a highlight of the trip!
This video caught me by surprise also. Initially I thought you were packing your large format stuff off to Norway, and I wanted to see the logistics. I really enjoyed your images, and your b-roll and your drone. Looks like a fantastic place. I recognized the red shack that TH did and must say that I liked your tighter shot better. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Edward! Sooner or later I'm going to have to deal with the challenges of traveling with film, perhaps on a return trip I'll figure out how to stuff a view camera in a suitcase, ha.
What a great video. Loved all your images. Your comment and shot of cod liver oil took me back to my childhood. Cod liver oil was the miracle supplement in the day and my mother gave it to us every morning. That was 70 years ago. Horrible tasting stuff.
Thanks Jack! I missed the whole cod liver oil phase but man they sure love the stuff up there I guess, haha. I did get served cod livers at dinner once, that was quite a treat 😝
Wow, those are great pictures you got. Makes me proud to be a Norwegian. Did you know that the BBC series Amazing Hotels has an episode dedicated to a hotel in Nusfjord? Maybe that's where you stayed. I think there are less than 100 citizens living there.
Thank you! It's been some time since this trip and the laws are continuously changing so I wouldn't use my experience as advice, but I am indeed an EASA certified pilot. As I understand it the insurance requirement came into effect after my time there so I don't have any experience in that regard unfortunately.
Lofoten! Oh my heck. And here I thought our recent camping trip outside Manti was exotic. I really liked the one b/w mountain image. There was another mountain image that might work as b/w. Also the yellow sunset image with the bird. I'm not such a fan of the wide-angle, big foreground stuff, but that's just me. Looks like it was a great trip. Good to see you back here again.
Haha, yeah it was quite a ways out of my comfort zone in terms of travel, but I suppose that was a large part of my motivation to go. It definitely made me reconsider (in a good way) what I think is possible for me in photography..
Loved your video and it's getting me excited to visit next month. Hard to say which is better but I like the longer exposure shots with the waves coming in. I really liked the long lense shots of the mountains. Reminds me of Iceland but nicer beach shots for sure. Do you do any Northern Lights photography or was it too cloudy?
Thanks Lloyd! We were absolutely watching the aurora forecast but unfortunately the nights we had a good chance were all overcast. It was a bit frustrating because we had other nights that were totally clear but the Kp index was nothing. Hopefully you'll have better luck than I did! I'll have to return one day to get those aurora shots!
Thanks Philip! I haven't done a ton of them myself and I'm sure they vary depending on who is leading them, but in this case they were providing as much or as little instruction as you wanted out of them. They had a few prepared presentations for us in the evenings, and they were super attentive towards everyone individually in the field but if you wanted to wander off and do your own thing for a while that was totally cool as well. It was also just nice to be surrounded by like minds for a week and to gain inspiration from each other.
Well I never saw that coming! Some great shots in there but I guess if you can't do that at Lofoten you shouldn't take photos 🤣 A great selection but from the very beginning that pano of the snowy beach with the bay curving round below the mountains is perfection!
Thank you Chris for taking the time and effort to produce this video. I've learned a lot. One quick question if you don't mind sharing. What is the name of the Church @ 29:55 ? It looks stunning.
Thanks so much for watching! I don’t actually know the name of it, and to be totally honest I think it might have been more toolshed than church but it’s near the small town of Vik
A+ video! Thanks so much for sharing camera settings! If you don't mind, how many batteries did you bring for your camera, and how long did each one last in the cold?
Thanks so much! On this trip, shooting with the Canon 5Dmk4, I brought five batteries total, one in the camera and four spares. Typically I'd say I went through around two or three batteries a day, and I don't really remember them being overly affected by the cold. It stayed in the 20's and 30's (F) the whole time we were there, so I'm sure that would have been a different story if the temperatures had been colder. Hope that helps!
Thank you for this very informative video! Just curious, how did you take your DJI drone to Norway? I’m a photographer based out of California and I’m planning a trip for December 2023 and wanted to know what I have to do to bring my DJI mavic pro with me. Thank you.
Thanks for watching David! Most - if not all airlines forbid putting your batteries (or any LiPo battery) in your checked baggage, so just be sure to put those in your carry on. I went an extra step and covered the contacts with a strip of electrical tape since that seems to make the TSA agents happy, but I don't know if that is really necessary. I didn't have room left in my camera bag so I put the drone body itself without the battery in a protective case inside my checked bag, but be sure to remove your memory card and carry it with you if you do that. They lost my luggage on the way back and although it ultimately made it back to me all that footage would have been lost if it was never found and I'd left the card in the drone. I'd highly recommend backing up or changing cards at least daily in case something happens and you can't recover the drone (that happened to one of the people in our group) at least you'll have the footage and images up to that point which softens the sting a little bit. That's about it really, airport security everywhere seems pretty accustomed to drones and Norway doesn't appear to have any problems with them, so you should have no trouble bringing your Mavic Pro along. All the best, you'll have a great time!
I think it might depend on what you'd like to shoot - being there around the polar night could give you excellent opportunities to shoot blue hour shots for multiple hours of the day, and good chances for shooting the aurora for example
Totally a cop-out, but I can’t pick a favorite. Thanks for the longer video and sharing the photos at the end. Lofoten is on my list as well - there is a hearty group of surfers that have settled there and they have lots of interesting stuff on YT also. Can’t wait for your next video!
Thanks Scott, I saw all the surfer shacks and signs while I was there! Hard to imagine beaches in the arctic being such a hotspot but it sure enough it is!
Thanks Craig! I'd really like to return with a film camera one day, I haven't quite figured out the logistics on traveling with film yet but I see others do it so it's definitely possible. I'm working on a couple things to give it a try in the near future so we'll see how it goes..
@@ChrisDarnell I have seen some work on film from Iceland, more so on slide and it has a unique look about it, I think it was Mike Strickland, check it out. I dont recall recent film images from Lofoten though.
Thanks Phill! It really was, haha. Images just run out in front of your lens up there it seems. Not sure when, but I expect I'll be returning with a film camera of some sort in the future.. it's definitely on my todo list!
