Photographing Swallows coming to a puddle to collect mud. Using the car as a hide I spent two sessions filming and photographing these birds by the side of the road.

Hi Mike, another really useful video, thanks for making and posting it. In regards to your comment about needing to upgrade your PC when doing 8k video, it's very easy to come to that conclusion, considering the large amounts of data that needs to be moved around, but there are alternatives to the constant need to upgrade :-) I recently switched from a mac video editor to DaVinci Resolve 17 which has a "proxy" mode where you can edit a lower resolution copy of the 8k video at full speed and it only needs to render the output at the end when you finish editing. If you want to check quality, you can render just the frames you want to check very easily. There is a free to use download to see if you like it. Regards Sarah

I would love Sony to incorporate a Pro Capture feature as well. It's extremely difficult for me to capture a humming bird or king fisher just as they're launching.

Another great video, Mike. Here in NZ, we often have a pair of swallows visit the beach where I spend a lot of time. They zoom around catching insects, a few inches above the beach and dunes, incredibly avoiding objects by the narrowest of margins but never landing. On a recent day of winds exceeding 40 mph, they were there and virtually at a standstill at times as they flew into the wind, but I didn't have my camera ready to grab a shot.

Hey Mike, Great video. Funny thing is my wife and I did this very thing a few years ago! And your images looks as if they could have been ours... So funny! I gave up mucking with window mounts that I bought, I made my own from plywood and covered it with automobile carpeting to match my SUV. I made it to set a bit lower so I could use my Monfrotto 502 video head and 500 f4 lens at eye level. So far it works so much better than ones sold out on the market. Always enjoy your videos! Great video Mike. I am in the Midlands and have just bought a Canon 90D. I am looking to get pics of birds and my Ridgebacks running and playing together. I have a Tamron 70mm - 300mm lens at the moment ( only 300mm I can afford at moment ). Any tips would be much appreciated.

I would advise you to get an M1 macbook pro or a mac mini, I’m editing 4k d-log footage with a 16gb mac mini, while editing in photoshop and lightroom at the same time. It’s purely incredible, can’t put this computer down, never gets hot! You can keep treating us with amazing videos like you do with one of those, and they are really cheap for a computer!

Hi Doug, I am not in a position to test different cameras. Only those I own. I am hoping Olympus catch up on the AF that the Sony A1 and Canon R5, R6 offer. If they do I will carry on with Olympus. For now I have one Sony body and one lens.

Great content! Any tips on photographing swifts in flight? I find it very challenging on my Olympus E-M1 II + Panasonic 100-300 II

Next to impossible to get close up flight shots. The OM-1 would do it much better, but it would still be difficult.

@@MikeLaneFRPS Thanks! That is what I suspected but having no comparison I really was starting to wonder if there is something wrong with me. I was considering OM-1 but so far I will try to use Olympus EE-1 dot sight. Maybe this will help with birds in flight a bit.

Another excellent video Mike. Do you find that when you are doing the swallows in flight that the Sony Af is quick enough to instantly snap onto the bird (or even its eye) or is there still a lot of hit and miss even if you managed to centre the image in the viewfinder ? I'm sure the Olympus would not be quick enough for swallows.

The Sony A1 is a new generation of AF, along with the Canon R5, R6 and probably the soon to be released Nikon Z9. If you can keep it in the viewfinder it will lock on far better than any camera I have used. I hope the next Olympus will catch up.
