After a little bit of a tip off about a potential chance of seeing the northern lights I picked a location that might work for some shots in the Yorkshire Wolds and set off in the van for the 90 mile trip knowing that I should arrive just about when it was getting dark.
All I can say is wow! This really was a once in a lifetime experience in the UK and I'm so glad I took the chance! Never thought I'd be hand-holding 5 second exposures with the OM-1 as a cosmic dance was going on all around me!
So, enjoy this short slideshow of the images I grabbed on the night - I'm still in awe!
If you enjoyed this video though, please do give it a thumbs up and leave a comment below with your thoughts - I'll be sure to read them all and I'll respond to as many as I can!

Wasn’t it just a stunning thing to witness I’ve been lucky enough to see auroras several times now but nothing will ever top that I doubt because it was seen by so many from our homes :) fabulous location and compositions Leigh

Thank you! I'm just blown away how far and wide it was seen - such a glorious night and one I'm glad I took a 90 mile drive to get to a spot that might work! It definitely did!

Beautiful shots. I slept through the hole thing not knowing about it 😢. I'd for a display last night, but it was too cloudy. Keep up the good work 👍

It was a once in a lifetime aurora borealis for us here in Mid Wales. Rather than my OM-1ii I grabbed my full frame Pentax K1 with an Irix 15mm lens and shot 20 seconds, f/2.4 with iso 400 on my Slik tripod, it was a stunning night, almost like science fiction. The Pentax is not good for video but it is a superb tool for night shooting, landscapes and star-scapes. Looking at Leigh's wonderful images I wish I had used my OM-1 with my m.Zuiko 12-100 pro to do some time lapse well but I was just so taken up in the moment gazing at the sky!

The om-1 was perfect with that 9mm on - never thought I'd get away with hand holding the entire night! Who says micro four thirds can't do astro! 😂

Epic stuff pal. I spent about 15 minutes trying to capture them to the north before I turned around and saw them behind me!!!

Lovely images. Second time in my life (70+) that I'vr seen them, first time with a useful camera! Went full headless chicken and left the iso on auto. Topaz ai is your friend.🤣 ps is that Sledmere?
@LeighWPhotos
@LeighWPhotos 4 месяца назад
@@brianlaunchbury4491 yep, spotted Sledmere on the maps before we set off and figured it would be a good one to try - turns out a lot of other people did too 😅 So glad I had an idea of the settings I wanted before getting going, but these are all jpg edits as we've not got home yet but just had to put something out as I'm still buzzing from the experience! My second time seeing it - the first time got me a day off school as my dad got the deckchairs out and we sat in the garden watching it until the early hours! Still never ever thought we'd get this sort of display though - absolutely amazing!

Nice. I am only able to get some moon pictures here. Too many trees and lights in Florida to see anything in the night sky.

I saw a few shots taken from Florida that night but I'm so glad I took the 90 mile drive to get into somewhere properly dark for this display. Hopefully the next time it comes around you can get out somewhere dark too!

Woderful photos Leigh. I have never ever seen them in my entire life. Entirely my fault for living where I do. Not allowed to go abroad. Sorry. 😭

First time I've seen them since the 80s - this was definitely an unusual occurrence to get able to see them so well from pretty much everywhere in the UK. No idea if it'll happen again in my lifetime but what an experience!

“Did you see them yourself?” Here in Southern California it would take a supernova to see anything out of the ordinary. So, no. 😢 For you, though - wow! Even at 1000 iso and f1.7, it’s amazing to me that you were able to hand-hold those shots. What was your average shutter speed? Seriously, those were some of the best aurora shots I’ve seen, easily competing with those taken by professionals in places like Iceland where you can bet they had a lot more in the way of fancy gear (tripods, for one thing).

Thank you! I was averaging about 5 seconds per shot so easily within the realms of what the OM-1 can handle with it's handheld assist display on - that little graphic showing how much you're moving gets me some obscenely long exposures! I was blown away with the shots I managed to get though - definitely far exceeded my expectations and I still look at them and wonder if it was actually real!!
