Thanks Ben. That means a lot, as that was my goal. My mind was thinking “just show me some actual photos taken by someone I know and trust”. On Monday however I am doing a more technical Q&A with someone from Canon if you’re interested. Live streaming at 10a PDT.
@xkben90

@@BehindTheShot Thanks! I am definitely interested. Just curious... do you think the R6 will have significantly better low light performance than the EOS R? One thing I was disappointed in with the EOS R was the low light. It's great coming from crop sensor cameras, but even still, it seems that it struggles. I know that the lower MP count will help, but I'm wondering if the updated sensor (the one from the IDX III) also helps in addition to the lower MP. Thoughts?
@BehindTheShot
@BehindTheShot 4 года назад
@@xkben90 Great question, and of course time will tell. My though is that the R is 30MP, where as the R6 is 20.1, like the 1DX mk III. That allows for larger photo sites / pixels, which is always better than more pixels when talking about low light performance. In fact it has a wider ISO range than the R5, so the argument can be made that the R6 is the camera for people like me that photograph concerts. The sticking point is that I use a 5D4 now, and while the High ISO performance may be better, and the images themselves may be better, there is the mental reality of moving down from 30 to 20 MP. Now to be clear, that is purely a mental block. MANY people shoot a 1DX3 for live music, like David Bergman, and 20.1 MP is more than enough for them. But yes, my thought is the sensor in the R being at 30MP, plus simply not being as good as the 1DX3 style sensor hurts it. The R6 having that advantage will be a good thing.
@xkben90
@xkben90 4 года назад
Behind The Shot I know you are talking photos, but I am actually excited as well from a video standpoint, so for me personally, the hit on the MP count isn’t too concerning, especially if I can get a better signal to noise ratio. Thank you for the quick response. Subscribed!

I have pre ordered the canon R6, it will be perfect for my event work. Not at all worried about 20mp .... I've used canon cameras since the canon eos 5 film camera 1992, I went digital in 2004 & have owned the 5d, 5dmkII, 6d, 6dmkII - 20mp is a good balance of high iso performance & file size. For me canon has the best ergonomics, the camera just feels right in my hands, I used to shoot weddings & the 6d / 5dmk4 were great, I now specialise in car photography & currently own the 5dmk4 & 5dsr ..... love the resolution in the 5dsr for car photography because I sell very large prints & the files out of that camera look amazing when you print big. These are great tools to have & having the option to pick the right one for the job your doing is the way to go!

Buying the R5 gives you the possibility to crop in in post and leave your teleconverters at home. Amazing what you can get with the R6. Hope there is some more lenses to come.
@BehindTheShot
@BehindTheShot 4 года назад
Yes, the R5 resolution gives a lot of flexibility with cropping after the fact, but there is much more to the choice between the R5 and R6. Along with the R5 resolution comes larger file sizes and possibly longer processing. For journalists or those that need a quick turn around that is now a disadvantage. Plus, for the cost difference you can easily buy a Sigma 150-600. Also, many photographers don’t need or own long glass and / or teleconverters because they simply don’t photograph that long. For those that need the MP the R5 is clearly the choice, and for those that want what is almost a 1DX3 in a mirror less body the R6 is a great option.

If it had just at least 24 megapixels, It'd be camera for sure. I wonder how many stops of DR this has or if the low light performance makes up for the low mega pixels.
@BehindTheShot
@BehindTheShot 4 года назад
My guess is, based on the processor being similar to the 1Dx mk iii , that the low light performance will be very good. Hope the DR is too. As to the 20MP I agree, I wish it was 24-30, but that’s mostly because I have a 5D4 and 5D3 now and mentally it feels odd to go down in MP. But, let’s be clear, the 1DX 3 is 20.1 and is used by high end pros shooting major jobs. There is plenty of file resolution there to print a 24” print or larger. If the argument is wanting room to crop the counter argument is that most people don’t print big, they post online at 2048 px or smaller in the long side. Based on that there plenty of room to crop.

@@BehindTheShot For a while I shot portraits and weddings with the amazing original 5D. It has 12.8MP (I still own 2 bodies). I printed numerous, beautiful 24"x36" prints using those files (for clients and myself) - if you nail exposure etc in camera there is no problem printing huge with 12.8MP. In fact, the original 5D is legendary for it's beautiful files. It was the 3fps that eventually killed it for me. And the postage sized lcd screen and single card slot didn't help either haha!
@BehindTheShot
@BehindTheShot 4 года назад
@@MitchelWuToyPhotography Agree 100%. People don't realize that also the larger the print, often the lower the PPI needed. Really, higher than that is just for cropping to gain 'zoom' artificially, while leaving enough resolution for a print. I can see that being a must for many, but tele-extenders are relatively inexpensive compared to buying long glass.

As a hobby photographer I have a few Canon bodies including including the 7D2, 5DM4 and EOS R, I also have a Nikon D500 and D850. The advantage that I see that Nikon has over Canon is dynamic range, especially in the D850. But like you I love the feel of the Canon bodies, but if I need to be able to pull out the shadows and crop the image, the D850 is king in my opinion. What I am looking for in a Canon body is the ability to pull out the shadows and crop the image like a Nikon D850. Will the R6 or R5 compete with the D850? If the R6 is producing impressive pics, will the R5 blow us away with performance?

@Behind The Shot @Rick Sammon Great discussion and photos, gentlemen! I'm coming from mostly using the 5Dm4, and while the R6 does seem appealing, I agree that it is hard to consider "stepping down" a full 10MP from the 5Dm4. So that leaves the R5 (in the Canon lineup). If Canon could have held a bit closer to the original 5Dm4 pricing, I would be much more on board. You also have to take into account and consider the need to purchase at least a few very expensive $350-$550+ CFexpress memory cards if you want to take advantage of any of the "high-end" video features. The increased price for the body, plus the prospect of upgrading to just the basic Trinity of new EOS RF lenses makes this quite a large investment. It's great that we can all use our existing EF glass, but we all know that to match the full capabilities of the new R5, we'll obviously want the new glass as well. That makes entry to the new R5 "system" a minimum of a $10k+ investment, and also pushes any potential newcomers to Canon, even with the more affordable R6, to quite a hefty investment. For professionals, it is actually quite reasonable considering the performance and features. But I'm sure those prices will dissuade quite a few photo & video enthusiasts, especially during these somewhat economically-stressed times. Regarding the postponed workshop, while I'm a beach and mountain man at heart, one place I would seriously reconsider going to right now might be Mt. Rainier (and Mt. Hood or the Cascades in general). Over the last few months, USGS personnel and vehicles have swarmed the mountain and all of the surrounding cities, installing hundreds of GPS/laser/thermal/seismic sensors and communications. That is A LOT of time, equipment, and money being spent to monitor the Cascade range. If you do some photo research, even from casual scenic photographs, you can see how the top of the mountain has grown. I guess with all of the sensors & monitoring that's now being done, we should have a fair bit of warning. But I would not dismiss a Mt. St. Helen's type event at Rainier in the not so distant future. And Hood & St. Helens are also under MUCH more scrutiny now as well. The USGS ain't hanging out up here in full force for nothin'. ;) But I guess that might make the Cascades a good thing to document now before the landscape is forever changed. Other 1000+ years dormant volcanos across the globe have recently come back to life as well. More excitement to photograph, as long as you can do it safely...send in the drones, haha! Stay safe, Amigos!

Thanks guys. Some really useful insights here. I was intending to go for the R5 along with the 100-500 as a one camera one lens combo for nature and wildlife from butterflies through to birds in flight. The 45mp of the R5 would give more scope for cropping, especially for small birds (eg Ricks's shot of the red cardinal which by the way looked good even cropped from a 20mp file) where even a 600 f4 often doesn't get you close enough. I'd also appreciate the better weather sealing of the R5 over the R6. However high ISO performance is also really important. In one of the videos on the R5/100-500 it shows a wildlife shot taken at ISO 12800 that looked and was described as 'clean'. If that is the case that would be good enough for me even if the R6 would be better still. Can Rick add anything there? Also a couple of specifics for Rick. Can you customise the frame rate for the mechanical and electronic shutters if you don't need the maximum 12/20 fps? And with the R5 do electronic shutter shots have to be written to the faster CF Express slot? Thanks again guys.

Based on a bit of research it would seem the the RF adapter works with both EF and EF-S mount lenses, so that shouldn’t be an issue. I can’t answer if 20MP is enough for you. That’s a personal choice. But many people do find that to be enough.
@LouisLuzuka
@LouisLuzuka 4 года назад
@@BehindTheShot thank you for your prompt reply, let me rephrase, i take landscape photos for print and i know that 20mp is a big step down from 30mp in the eos R even the RP has a little more, but for EF-S lenses you can only film in 720p so for me its looking like either the eos R or the R5, but i do love that you posted a video on the R6, feels like canon knows what they're doing with this one, you gotta pay to play. smart!! which is your favourite camera to use so far, and what has brought you the most joy?

@BehindTheShot 4 года назад
Hi Louis, Thanks for the clarification. I agree that Canon has hit a lot of the checklist items for many people. 20MP is plenty for printing. Even if you end up printing at 200dpi you could print 20 to 27” prints. In other words you can print pretty large from a 20MP image. But no question the larger MP bodies give greater crop flexibility. And I was not aware of the 720 limit you mention with EF-S lenses, and I haven’t been able to confirm that in a quick search. My 5D4 is my fave camera.
@LouisLuzuka

@@BehindTheShot thank you so much that helps a lot, so if I choose to get the R6 then I'm basically being more certain with my composition, so I wouldn't have to go in post to crop in and I should be good enough, thanks for clearing that up and the 5d4 is certainly one I had my eye on as well my first pro body was the 40d and that thing was a tank even if it wasn't full frame as a kid it was a huge step up from my canon rebel ! I was led to this video clip with Rick Sammon due to the fact that I have been shooting with my Canon R6 camera. I do mostly bird photography and have been a great fan of Rick, especially when I have seen his live events at various camera conventions. One thing that really stood out in your interview with Rick was the fact that he shoots in Aperture Priority. I have been having a debate with several RU-vid bird photographers that claim that one should never shoot birds in any mode other than manual. These folks are adamant about their use of manual in shooting birds and getting quality captures. Here is a link to one guy who feels Aperture should never be used in bird photography. By the way the R6 with my 600mm f11 is one fantastic lens. I also use my RF 100-400 USM II in low light and get many tack sharp bird shots. Here is the guy who claims only shoot manual. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I-7LPu5DJQ8.html

Hey Tom, Looks like you started a "conversation" there. I shoot concerts in manual mode, only manual. I know others that shoot in an auto mode, like Aperture Priority or Auto ISO etc. Neither of us right or wrong, and if anyone is arguing they are then they simply biased to what they think. I can show you wildlife photographers with star images shot in AV Mode. Same with any other mode, and you are making quality work and selling it or whatever then keep doing it and ignore those people. The idea that AV should NEVER be used is crazy. Yes, any auto mode makes decisions for you and you may not like the decisions, especially if it makes a change as you follow a subject through varying light conditions. But, if you are good at riding EV compensation or whatever, and if you make the shot, then who cares. Be you .

Generally I agree, but in even half way decent light a lightweight 800mm f11 for less than 1,000 dollars might be fun to carry on a hike, or maybe the (lighter yet) 600mm for less than 700 bucks. Stop and think about it and it's really only about a stop and a half slower than the new 100-500 all the way out to 500 (7.1), and that's a three thousand dollar lens. Having said that I cannot remember ever getting a successful flight shot at f11, or even trying, but I think Canon has a lot of confidence in their new camera's high iso capabilities. If I get the R6, which I am planning on doing, it might be fun to rent one of these lenses just for kicks.

What is the reality is that most birders and magazines don’t really care as much about the aesthetics as pros do. I’ve seen the most washed out over exposed and sticks behind birds etc get published while the aesthetically pleasing images just sit in computers hard drives lol. There is definitely potential in this series, good effort. They'd greatly benefit by including exif data when showing a picture. I didn't bother trying to listen to the lengthy conversation to try and tease out that info, so it's a thumbs down for me. I hope that's constructive.

Thanks for giving it a try Graham, and for the feedback. I do include EXiF but not as a graphic. It’s part of the conversation, except the 1 or 2 times a guest’s has not wanted to share it. This was actually an unusual episode, in that the focus was the EOS R6 release, regular shows are a bit different. The premise is a deep dive into a single image, with a rare episode where we might show supporting images, so there is much data that is verbal only. The show is also available as a podcast in either audio only or video. But again, I really appreciate your time giving it a try. Enjoy your weekend.

I am not sure if that’s a question or a statement, but I have a recent episode where we discuss all AF settings in detail.

R6: ONLY 20MP. two-thirds the resolution of APS-C cameras like the Canon EOS 90D. WTF CANON. YOU CHEAPED OUT AGAIN.

While I understand the complaints about the 20MP, and I also wish it was 24-30, I think this is not the big issue many see it as. Lower MP brings disadvantages and advantages, like everything else. Faster offload of images, faster processing, easier workflow, larger pixels almost always translates to better pixels, with less heat and less noise.People have been making amazing professional, and sellable, images on the 1DX mk II for years with no complaints. People like David Bergman that are at the top of their game. If you shoot for a wire service, or a gig that needs fast turnaround the 20MP could be seen as a feature.. So yeah, mentally it’s tough to feel like I’d go from 30MP on my 5D4 down to 20MP, but make no mistake... 20MP is very usable.
