Your videos reveal a depth of knowledge, a willingness to do painstakingly meticulous research, incredible organization skills, and a deep understanding of how to arrange and present complex information in an easy-to-consume format. And all that still doesn’t include the significant amount of planning that goes into every level of your work. You have to come up with an interesting set of questions just to get the process started, and that’s no easy feat itself! Seriously, you are unique, irreplaceable, and, unfortunately, under appreciated (but not by me!). Just wanted to send you a sincere thank you for all your hard work. Probably the best review of the video function of these cameras I've seen to date, although I would've preferred a little more showing along with the exemplary telling (e.g., more sample videos). Love the incremental f stop adjustments. Here's my question: is the line skipped 4K (non HQ) out of the EOS R5 better than the 4K out of the EOS R (cropped)?

It's a bit of a shame. I was excited about the R5, but I think it just doesn't seem like it aligns well with my use cases. Great review, Gerald!

I’m not sure I can compare the effectiveness of any review of any kind of product I’ve ever seen to Gerald here. This is mind blowing how he can not only test these very specific tools to their utmost far limits and yet compress and deliver the analysis in such a concise and understandable package. A++ As a note, I am a professional photographer that does almost zero video for work. These cameras were not marketed to me. I don’t need anything new, I’m happy with my DSLR, however I do feel Canon marketing and product highlights in these cameras are very confusing. How can they on one hand, deliver 99% of what people hated about the R yet shoot themselves in the foot by offering features that are somewhat unusable? That’s not typically their MO, I have always looked to canon for their reliability and durability. They should stop trying to be something they are not.

"Recovery cooldown period of 30 to 40 minutes"... And doesn't matter if video or photo mode. Yep, The R5 and R6 have failed, unless Canon is able to fix this through a firmware update.

FINALLY, somebody said it. Canon backed themselves in to a corner with such a video-centric marketing campaign that it was destined to fail as soon as those video limitations kicked in.

Great review. I'm going to get the R5 because I like the look of Canon images and I need dual card slots because I photograph weddings (and cards have failed on me before). For video it'll suit my needs. I make RU-vid videos in 1080p. I'm not about to shoot a feature film with it.

wonderful video, I've been watching all the R5 videos i can find while learning about, loving and hating my R5. I feel like i a have a good handle on what i can and can not achieve with this camera. A quick question about the IS modes. So when i don't have an is lens on the camera i get is mode on or off option. IS this the IBIS or an added IS, so i can turn off ibis to help with the wobble?.also theres the Digital IS which has on or enhanced. so assume this is just an added is with cropping. havent really seem to much explaining these options in depth. The physics-defining overheating and the long cool-down time really seem to be a software limitation at this point. Especially considering the fact that cool-down time is not affected by ambient temp. Perhaps this should be considered as a "feature" for protecting Canon's pro cine cameras.

Now that I'm shooting more video, I've been wanting a mirrorless that is focused for video. Ok, here goes - long read ahead, you've all been warned.. I almost never leave YT comments, let alone lengthy ones - but massive kudos for this review and all other previews, Gerald. I can imagine and appreciate the level of effort they take, and I don't subscribe to a channel lightly, especially when I'm unsure whether I'll be interested in seeing regular camera content constantly appear in my feeds. As far as R5 YT reviews go - I've seen them all at this point. Thought I'd heard everything so I just came here for the INTJ-style analysis - but the bit about 120p internal being recorded as 30p slow-mo in-camera (wtf?) and the extra DR headroom with RAW was complete news. You were also the first to talk about the line-skipping quality and provide detailed overheating/DR measurements with minimal fluff, so as a techy who sees this as a hobby (stills photography primarily) I really appreciate this type of detailed rundown that not only discusses the implementation details but also the implications of them in practice and how they might differ from the competition where a superior alternative may exist. It tells me what they're doing right and where there's room for improvement, and acts as a litmus for just how once-in-a-decade-revolutionary this camera really is. I don't think I've learned as much practical differences between the brands and various models from the other sources as I have from you. To other YT'ers: Y'all need to step up your testing and thoroughness game; there ain't no authority like expert authority, and I'm not the type who thinks a high follower count is proof of that. As someone who bought into the R5 as a first ever camera (hopefully in my hands tomorrow thanks to the lovely people at CameraCanada), I can say what burned me the most about Canon's marketing was the fact that they focused on building hype for the video-centric features right up until the pre-order window without having all their cards on the table or giving reviewers enough time to explore it in depth. It was the media pressure and confusion from the public that forced them to react on the overheating topic, and even then, they could've been much faster to release the detailed user manual and/or recording limits/samples/file sizes, etc. Instead, it went something like: months of slow trickle and hype build up, followed by a month of reality checks and steady trickle of bad/gotcha/caveat type findings by people such as yourself Gerald. It's as if they wanted people to pre-order the thing, hoping they wouldn't see any of this content over the next four weeks until they got the camera in their hands and further, that they STILL wouldn't care after running head-first into arbitrarily placed brick walls well after pre-order cancellation was no longer an option on the table. Yo, Canon, if you're reading this listen the fuck up - it's coming from a first time customer: With a basic lens and cfexpress card, you're asking Canadians to drop 8k CAD for your 8k pocket furnace during an economic and public health meltdown the likes of which hasn't been felt in roughly a century. You do NOT set impossibly high expectations only to allow them get crushed in the final push to market, ALL THE WHILE knowing that only a smaller subset of individuals (based solely on shooting style/pref/use case - such as Gerald already mentioned in his closing) would really look at this camera and be unoffended by the gimmicky nature of their implementation. You are lucky that Sony didn't shit on your parade even harder, because if that A7S3 had all the same capabilities it does now but with a slightly higher 20-24mp sensor we wouldn't be having this cozy fireside chat. Instead, what you should have done is emphasized the point that this is a STILLS FIRST camera with amazing video IQ but NOT SUITABLE for production use cases. Key word is EMPHASIZED, because no one wants a runaway hype train. Sure, the hype would've been dampened but all those people bummed out about the reality would accept that is not what you're trying to deliver. Then, when Sony revealed their camera, it would've been a scenario more akin to Christmas - everyone getting a camera for their needs without the bad mojo of crushed expectations ruining the festivities. Consider this free common sense feedback on your marketing strategy, from someone who consults professionally on Marketing Technology and Strategy for companies even larger than thou. But let's talk gear again: Do I wish the video features were implemented better? Yes - especially the 4k120/60 IQ, or maybe with unlimited 4k HQ recording. But as a person who was on the fence about an A7RIV and yearning for better modes in video, this still ticks the right boxes. Despite the A73S being by far superior as a workhorse product, I'm content just knowing I can match or exceed IQ with the few clips that I'm able to take (lol) while still being on par with A7RIV for stills. In the end, I just want to know it's capable of the best IQ on both fronts to justify this sort of crazy price premium, without being subjected to annoying and inauthentic marketing spin. If anyone's still out there reading this far *muah* love you. Here's my wishlist for the R5: 1) Fix the wide angle IBIS wobbleshit 2) Find ways to reduce cooldown recovery times - I don't care how, make it happen even if I have to send the body back for servicing OR failing that, make a cheap accessory to help OR provide guidance on what we can do on our end that will have an actual cooldown time benefit 3) cfexpress card buffering modes where HQ videos are automatically transferred to a slower 512gb UHS-I SD in the background to keep room for these ridiculous file sizes - no hobbyist is buying more than one of these golden nvme nuggets (plus this could enable relay recording) 4) Remove the ridiculous 30 and 7.5min recording limits, or otherwise explain what critical technical purpose they provide - I'm a first time customer and already I'm not liking this cripple hammer business 5) Enable internal/external RAW capture for the 4k modes, because it seems like the only way to get that extra DR is to pay the filesize tax 6) Implement all the fixes and little things that Gerald and others have called out - please don't make me cringe every time I open the card slot door. Peace out nerds.

I currently do not shoot Canon or shoot video, so was surprised that the video was really video-centric. Wish that was in the tagline. I am reassured by your opinion that, for a still photographer who already owns quality Canon glass (tick for both), this camera is a good choice. So there are two possible explanations for Canons heat recovery times: 1. Canon has placed a software limitation on the recovery time to lower the operating time following a heat warning. 2. Canon has created a space time barrier surrounding the camera that prevents heat energy from leaving the dimensional planes in which the camera exists. Maybe it’s a mixture of the two.
