Owen Pesnell depends though. Having a higher MP only helps when printing. The siii will be better for Astro photographers (to a degree) as while it may capture less stars, it will capture more light and thus have a cleaner image. I think It also has a 16bit sensor vs the 14bit canon sensor. So color performance in raw may be better. If you’re only posting on social media or other digital sites, the 45mp image will be pointless on the canon. Only if you’re printing will it have a real advantage in photos.

Gerald, I discovered you a few weeks ago and the more I see of your current and past work, the more I feel compelled to say, I LOVE YOU! Your videos reveal a depth of knowledge, a willingness to do painstakingly meticulous research, incredible organization skills, and a deep understanding of how to arrange and present complex information in an easy-to-consume format. And all that still doesn’t include the significant amount of planning that goes into every level of your work. You have to come up with an interesting set of questions just to get the process started, and that’s no easy feat itself! Seriously, you are unique, irreplaceable, and, unfortunately, under appreciated (but not by me!). Just wanted to send you a sincere thank you for all your hard work. I know I’m not alone in saying this, but i comes from the heart: I deeply appreciate you!

Probably the best review of the video function of these cameras I've seen to date, although I would've preferred a little more showing along with the exemplary telling (e.g., more sample videos). Love the incremental f stop adjustments. Here's my question: is the line skipped 4K (non HQ) out of the EOS R5 better than the 4K out of the EOS R (cropped)?

I’m not sure I can compare the effectiveness of any review of any kind of product I’ve ever seen to Gerald here. This is mind blowing how he can not only test these very specific tools to their utmost far limits and yet compress and deliver the analysis in such a concise and understandable package. A++ As a note, I am a professional photographer that does almost zero video for work. These cameras were not marketed to me. I don’t need anything new, I’m happy with my DSLR, however I do feel Canon marketing and product highlights in these cameras are very confusing. How can they on one hand, deliver 99% of what people hated about the R yet shoot themselves in the foot by offering features that are somewhat unusable? That’s not typically their MO, I have always looked to canon for their reliability and durability. They should stop trying to be something they are not.

Bizarre. If all you need is 4k video, then 8.5 megapixels suffice. why even consider a 45MP camera? If you do need 8k video, then your alternatives are few and good luck with that. Engineering is always about tradeoffs. E.g. there's no way to say that the A7s3 is a "better camera" than an A7r4. They're fundamentally different, making different tradeoffs relative to what current technology permits. Clearly this is not intended to be an a7s3 competitor: its hardware is optimized to handle 45MP frames at a high frame rate. That's going to get hot. if that's not what you need, why pay for the extra hardware? Yes, yes. I'm sure everyone is still looking for that swiss army knife camera. but the demands of a peak-performing hi-res stills camera will always be different from what a video camera wants. Perhaps this is what Gerald is getting at in his review -- this is primarily a stills camera. but again, who would think otherwise?

Yeah the more I see about this camera, the more it's just an EOS R that isn't really really limited, as opposed to the God camera that's 5 years ahead of it's time. If you actually strip it back to what most people will get from it, it's a 4k average camera with slightly awkward but ok high frame rate options. Which is fine, if that's what it said on the box. But it takes a lot of digging to find out what any of that actually means. Which I think is pretty bad of Canon tbh.
@chuiwyjustin
@chuiwyjustin 4 года назад
James Travis I disagree. I have the R5 and it’s an excellent camera which is more photo oriented than for video. It has a great balance of ergonomics, resolution and autofocus capability that puts it miles ahead of the EOS R, which was frankly a shit camera for any purpose. The R5’s video capabilities are pretty good for non-feature length purposes, and getting to shoot 8K is a bonus.
@jambononi
@jambononi 4 года назад
@@chuiwyjustin fair enough! I think the marketing really did rub me the wrong way though because (maybe because I'm insane and need to chill but also) as a pro videographer the R5 just looks like a massive red flag of 3 to 4 years of constant frustration on jobs. And yeah the photo side is awesome, the auto focus looks great and I've no doubt people will get good results. Just don't sell it to people who will get burned by a camera that will fail on a job because they recorded 60p for too long after taking photos or something. I think my point is, it might have been better not to have the features at all or a hard limit of 5 mins so no one messes up a shoot because of it. 🙃 anyway!
@chuiwyjustin
@chuiwyjustin 4 года назад
@@jambononi if your main gig is doing video, the R5 isn't for you. The Sony A7S3 is better suited for you. But if what you do is mainly photography, and you take high quality 4k/8k footage (clips) occasionally, the R5 is great.
@jambononi
@jambononi 4 года назад
@@chuiwyjustin well the point is its marketed as a primarily a video camera. And the expectation, based on who buys hybrid cameras is that they function as expected. That's the point really. A high end hybrid camera works. This doesn't. The hq is fine if you're literally playing around with it for fun or randomly taking one or two clips a week, but who actually does that? A camera needs to be able to record for an hour, thats where most hybrid video sits, in weddings, events, and interviews. The point im making is youre saying that as if it's obvious, but its not. Unless you watch multiple videos and follow tech channels, you won't know that the camera will be an on set disaster. So its very frustrating and people seem to think its fine but its not. Loads of people will get fucked over by this.

I like the title :D first 4k cameras weren't better than this one is with 8k :D and yet everyone promoted them :D Is canon's 4k 120p better than a7rIV's 1080p 120? Does a7rIV offer 4k 60p? I am an owner of r7IV and it looks like R5 eats that camera for the breakfast. Now Sony released 12mp pure video camera that cannot shoot 6k and yet they try to compare video only camera to the hybrid wet dream camera with high mpx like a7rIV. I would praise sony if they made 20mp sensor in a7sIII. For video a7sIII is just a cinema camera in mirrorless camera body and everyone is clapping their hands as they put flip lcd, while my a7rIV has a backscreen that has less pixles than a price of a camera. Same goes to that beautiful screen which has a moire when I focus and it looks like crap compared to the eos R.

@@blazeboy777 The R5 is more of a hybrid camera in which Canon threw the kitchen sink at. Good at photos and videos with some limitations (though like what Gerald said, they marketed it more as a video camera). The a7R IV on the other hand is a stills first camera that does good video. wonderful video, I've been watching all the R5 videos i can find while learning about, loving and hating my R5. I feel like i a have a good handle on what i can and can not achieve with this camera. A quick question about the IS modes. So when i don't have an is lens on the camera i get is mode on or off option. IS this the IBIS or an added IS, so i can turn off ibis to help with the wobble?.also theres the Digital IS which has on or enhanced. so assume this is just an added is with cropping. havent really seem to much explaining these options in depth. Aloha have a good day, I see 1300 comments so ill keep hunting for answers as well.

The physics-defining overheating and the long cool-down time really seem to be a software limitation at this point. Especially considering the fact that cool-down time is not affected by ambient temp. Perhaps this should be considered as a "feature" for protecting Canon's pro cine cameras.

Ok, here goes - long read ahead, you've all been warned.. I almost never leave YT comments, let alone lengthy ones - but massive kudos for this review and all other previews, Gerald. I can imagine and appreciate the level of effort they take, and I don't subscribe to a channel lightly, especially when I'm unsure whether I'll be interested in seeing regular camera content constantly appear in my feeds. As far as R5 YT reviews go - I've seen them all at this point. Thought I'd heard everything so I just came here for the INTJ-style analysis - but the bit about 120p internal being recorded as 30p slow-mo in-camera (wtf?) and the extra DR headroom with RAW was complete news. You were also the first to talk about the line-skipping quality and provide detailed overheating/DR measurements with minimal fluff, so as a techy who sees this as a hobby (stills photography primarily) I really appreciate this type of detailed rundown that not only discusses the implementation details but also the implications of them in practice and how they might differ from the competition where a superior alternative may exist. It tells me what they're doing right and where there's room for improvement, and acts as a litmus for just how once-in-a-decade-revolutionary this camera really is. I don't think I've learned as much practical differences between the brands and various models from the other sources as I have from you. To other YT'ers: Y'all need to step up your testing and thoroughness game; there ain't no authority like expert authority, and I'm not the type who thinks a high follower count is proof of that. As someone who bought into the R5 as a first ever camera (hopefully in my hands tomorrow thanks to the lovely people at CameraCanada), I can say what burned me the most about Canon's marketing was the fact that they focused on building hype for the video-centric features right up until the pre-order window without having all their cards on the table or giving reviewers enough time to explore it in depth. It was the media pressure and confusion from the public that forced them to react on the overheating topic, and even then, they could've been much faster to release the detailed user manual and/or recording limits/samples/file sizes, etc. Instead, it went something like: months of slow trickle and hype build up, followed by a month of reality checks and steady trickle of bad/gotcha/caveat type findings by people such as yourself Gerald. It's as if they wanted people to pre-order the thing, hoping they wouldn't see any of this content over the next four weeks until they got the camera in their hands and further, that they STILL wouldn't care after running head-first into arbitrarily placed brick walls well after pre-order cancellation was no longer an option on the table. Yo, Canon, if you're reading this listen the fuck up - it's coming from a first time customer: With a basic lens and cfexpress card, you're asking Canadians to drop 8k CAD for your 8k pocket furnace during an economic and public health meltdown the likes of which hasn't been felt in roughly a century. You do NOT set impossibly high expectations only to allow them get crushed in the final push to market, ALL THE WHILE knowing that only a smaller subset of individuals (based solely on shooting style/pref/use case - such as Gerald already mentioned in his closing) would really look at this camera and be unoffended by the gimmicky nature of their implementation. You are lucky that Sony didn't shit on your parade even harder, because if that A7S3 had all the same capabilities it does now but with a slightly higher 20-24mp sensor we wouldn't be having this cozy fireside chat. Instead, what you should have done is emphasized the point that this is a STILLS FIRST camera with amazing video IQ but NOT SUITABLE for production use cases. Key word is EMPHASIZED, because no one wants a runaway hype train. Sure, the hype would've been dampened but all those people bummed out about the reality would accept that is not what you're trying to deliver. Then, when Sony revealed their camera, it would've been a scenario more akin to Christmas - everyone getting a camera for their needs without the bad mojo of crushed expectations ruining the festivities. Consider this free common sense feedback on your marketing strategy, from someone who consults professionally on Marketing Technology and Strategy for companies even larger than thou. But let's talk gear again: Do I wish the video features were implemented better? Yes - especially the 4k120/60 IQ, or maybe with unlimited 4k HQ recording. But as a person who was on the fence about an A7RIV and yearning for better modes in video, this still ticks the right boxes. Despite the A73S being by far superior as a workhorse product, I'm content just knowing I can match or exceed IQ with the few clips that I'm able to take (lol) while still being on par with A7RIV for stills. In the end, I just want to know it's capable of the best IQ on both fronts to justify this sort of crazy price premium, without being subjected to annoying and inauthentic marketing spin. If anyone's still out there reading this far *muah* love you. Here's my wishlist for the R5: 1) Fix the wide angle IBIS wobbleshit 2) Find ways to reduce cooldown recovery times - I don't care how, make it happen even if I have to send the body back for servicing OR failing that, make a cheap accessory to help OR provide guidance on what we can do on our end that will have an actual cooldown time benefit 3) cfexpress card buffering modes where HQ videos are automatically transferred to a slower 512gb UHS-I SD in the background to keep room for these ridiculous file sizes - no hobbyist is buying more than one of these golden nvme nuggets (plus this could enable relay recording) 4) Remove the ridiculous 30 and 7.5min recording limits, or otherwise explain what critical technical purpose they provide - I'm a first time customer and already I'm not liking this cripple hammer business 5) Enable internal/external RAW capture for the 4k modes, because it seems like the only way to get that extra DR is to pay the filesize tax 6) Implement all the fixes and little things that Gerald and others have called out - please don't make me cringe every time I open the card slot door. Peace out nerds.

I am reassured by your opinion that, for a still photographer who already owns quality Canon glass (tick for both), this camera is a good choice. Since 4K60 external has no overheating, Doesn’t this make the R5 perfect for studio RU-vid production considering it’s subject to compression once uploaded anyway?
@youuuuuuuuuuutube
@youuuuuuuuuuutube 4 года назад
It depends what you mean by "perfect", the 4k60 is using line skipping, so you don't get a very detailed 4k image. It should look pretty good once downscaled to 1440p though.
@mondotv4216
@mondotv4216 4 года назад
SwitchRich It really does depend what you shoot. For people and shallow depth of field it’s not that noticeable but for hard lines like buildings, cars etc and deep depth of field things then a line skipped image can look noticeably soft. You can also notice that lack of crispiness around eye glints, moire can be a problem etc.
@mondotv4216
@mondotv4216 4 года назад
SwitchRich Your confusing compression with bit depth and whether a camera line skips has nothing to do with either. A camera can line skip, have not the sharpest image, but if it’s 10 bit 422 and then you’re not going to see colour banding. If it’s highly compressed you might see artifacts on leaves rustling in the wind but actually you’ll see less problems than you’d see on a more detailed image using the same compression scheme. Unless we’re talking banding in stills which is caused by electronic rather than mechanical shutter.
@mondotv4216
@mondotv4216 4 года назад
SwitchRich That’s not compression. That’s 8 bit colour. The only time compression will affect that is if it’s crap compression (which is unlikely on most cameras these days) or if you push a grade far enough to see macroblocking. And once again, compression has zero to do with line skipping. Of course 8 bit colour is a form of compression (well not really - you’re just not recording data because it’s not available in an 8bit camera) but I assume by compression you are referring to bit rate and codec compression i.e. LongGOP or all I and data rate? These things have no bearing on colour gradients.
@mondotv4216
@mondotv4216 4 года назад
@SwitchRich Sorry - my original comment was about what images look worse with line skipping not compression. Go back and check. And smooth gradients would apply whether the image was line skipped or not. I never mentioned RU-vid compression at all - and yes currently RU-vid only supports 8 bit. If you want 10 bit use Vimeo. And once again - zero difference between a line skipped image and down converted image - both will suffer from gradient issues using RU-vid compression if the conditions are right. I was always talking about onboard compression that cameras use and I stand by the fact that will not make one iota of difference to gradients. Unless we're talking about the A7S3 which actually has a choice of 8bit and 10bit but then why would you ever shoot 8bit?

So there are two possible explanations for Canons heat recovery times: 1. Canon has placed a software limitation on the recovery time to lower the operating time following a heat warning. 2. Canon has created a space time barrier surrounding the camera that prevents heat energy from leaving the dimensional planes in which the camera exists. Maybe it’s a mixture of the two.

@NoTicket

Jay Sanchez hey Jay, yes I know. I agree with you on that. The problem is that the laws of physics are being defied through some mechanism which prevents cooling the camera externally with any real benefit. This camera seems to have the thermal characteristics of a Yeti cooler, rather than a 750g camera with how well it retains heat and resists cooling. Many have reported already that when the video “overheated” the camera is cool to the touch, and the fact that leaving the camera fully open, placing ice packs on it, make no difference means something weird is going on.

Maybe they insulated the camera so well from the outside heat that as a downside the heat inside is difficult to dissipate. Tony N. said that according to it’s test the overheating time doesn’t change so much when the camera is exposed to sunlight, meaning that probably is very sealed against heat.
