Is it worth photographing without sunset colours? What do you do when there are no sunset colours?
In this video, I go to Black Lake at Preddvor in Slovenia. One section of the lake is still frozen over, but there isn’t a single cloud to be seen, even over the mountains. However, not to be deterred, I find a composition that includes more foreground and less sky.
Even though the lack of clouds mean there will likely be no sunset colours, I shoot three different types of images, each making use of the conditions available. I show you how I use a polarizing filter to make the snowy mountain peak stand out against the blue sky, and an ND grad to balance the brightness difference between the sky and foreground.
Finally, I use a telephoto lens to go right up close to the mountain peak and capture the last wisp of soft, warm light before it disappears completely.
