In this week's episode, I'll show you the effects of adding a second light to your portraits in-studio, either as a Rim/Hair light or as a background light.
It is important for photographers, especially when first starting out, to focus their energy on mastering the skills that will build a foundation for everything that is to come. So before you think about using 2, 3 or even 4+ lights in your work, concentrate on getting comfortable with just one light and put more attention in to learning how to interact with and direct your subjects. Perfect lighting can never overcome an awkward pose or expression or a lack of flow to your session. There are no shortcuts in this game...one day at a time.
In this brief walk-through, I'd like to simply show you how adding that second light to your work can create a different look depending on how it's used. Over time, as your work progresses, as you book more jobs and have saved some money, you can consider purchasing a 3rd light to further diversify the looks that you can create during a session. Possibilities are endless for sure. I understand that in this video we are using a black savage seamless background so the darkness of the background is a bit more extreme than if we were shooting with lighter backdrops or even utilizing natural backgrounds. But just let this serve as an example with less distractions.
I hope this episode is helpful. As always, please let me know if you have any questions about this topic or this episode.
Also, if you are struggling with anything in particular, feel free to let me know in the comments and I will certainly consider dedicating an episode to that topic.
Thanks for checking out this episode of Photography 180 and be sure to subscribe to the channel so that you can tune in to future episodes.

Its good how us photographers work with different processes....i do the reverse, get my background right first then i and build in the key / fill lights. If these aren't quite to my liking then i'll adjust background...if it works then why not.

There are so many different ways to go about it... That's what makes photography so great! If you commit to a "my way or the highway" mentality, then you're missing out!
