Thanks for checking out the very first episode in our brand new series, Photography 180, featuring our amazing friend Lisa of Lisa G Beauty ( / lisag.beauty .
We are starting the series out nice and easy with a brief walkthrough on how we go about creating a simple and clean headshot in-studio using one light and some common studio accessories such as a V-Flat and a Reflector.
0:00 Episode Intro
0:16 Opening statement
0:51 Equipment Breakdown
1:22 First image with key light only
1:39 Adding V-Flat for fill
2:00 Second image w/key light + v-flat
2:17 Adding Bowflector for fill + catchlights
2:28 Third image w/key light + v-flat + reflector
2:45 Outro + Final Images
While the one light result is more than acceptable, I believe the final image is the most complete with the subtle improvements introduced by filling in some of the shadows and adding a warm glow to the skin as well as catchlights in the bottom of the eyes. It's important to understand that while this setup is extremely versatile, not every setup will work the same for each different type of person who steps in front of your camera. It is critical to develop the skills and understanding of how to work with lighting in order to properly light the specific subject that you are working with.
Of course, from here, things can get way more complicated and involved as we begin adding rim/hair lights, background lights, grids, gels etc etc etc. Remember though...if you are just starting out with headshots, it is always best to start simple, build up a comfort level working with just the single light and perhaps a reflector and then progress to including more lights and mods. This video also only shows one single light placement when of course there many. So move that light around and watch closely how light and shadow fall on your subjects and then react accordingly to achieve the result that you (and your subject) are most happy with.
All of these final images were edited using Evoto AI, which we have been using for the last few weeks now. It's been an absolute game-changer when it comes to our retouching workflow and if you retouch your own images, I think you'll love what it can do. It's free to sign-up and if you use the link down below you will receive 30 free edits to use within your first month of signing up. Give it a shot and let me know your thoughts!

Truly I’ve scanned tons of channels this past 6 months to learn photography and this is much better than the “big channels”. Thanks !

Interesting. I haven’t seen anybody use the curved reflector with a key light that was off center.

For sure! The biggest difference of course would be that within the reflection of the curved reflector in her eyes, you will definitely see that one side is slightly brighter if you do put the light off to one side. @@lour7753
