Great video! I just want to say regarding not being able to do somethings without a filters. I've been able to come up with my own flow to blend multiple exposures using photoshop to emulate an ND filter. I primarily use this if I want a really long exposure and my 10-stop ND filter isn't enough. I import all the exposures into Lightroom, do a little white balance/exposure matching. Then important into Photoshop as layers, auto align all layers and then mean blend. While it requires more work, I like the flexibility of this flow, since it allows you to mask out certain parts of the image that you may not want to be long exposure (trees in the wind)
Certainly, you can replicate an ND filter. I have done it using photo stacking, most photo editors have that option. However it does need some time and effort to take the right amount of photos (over 5) and process them, especially if they are not aligned 100%. Using an ND filter is much much simpler - if you can afford it.
Solid video dude! Love the production quality and audio you got even while in your van. Definitely makes it super enjoyable to watch. And the animations were on point. Gonna pick up a couple of these breakthroughs to add to the collection 🤙 thanks for the informative vid
we are camera filter manufacturer, I don't know why, we OEM for USA brand. we sale to them with USD3 per pcs, they sell USD199USD per pcs. who is making money. anyone knows? and I am looking for new customer. my salary is 500USD per month。 if I can't sell our filter, I gonna loose my job. help me
To me, the graduated filter is the easiest one to replicate for free. Bracketed exposure, combine in post and use whatever gradient you want. So I'd always recommend to skip it and put that money into the other filters. Except UV filters...are people just freeballing it without a lens cap and trusting UV filters for protection? I would never put cheap glass in front of my lens and I'd never pay big money for a UV filter.
Thanks Nate...Help! How do I best deal with sun glare on the water when shooting video of surfing? ND or CPL? I'm using a Canon R5C with RF100-500 lens. Great video content. Thanks for posting.
Are you talking about the IR filters that are built directly onto sensors? Because the IR filters that go in front of the lens filter out all light except for IR, which is a very cool artistic effect, but very uncommon in photography and nearly unheard of in videography.

My problem when it is sunny and will make a photo whits a lens 1.8 full open. Than the camera blinking ad 1/8000. Than you use also the ND filter (film makers). When you will isolad the back ground. Look out whits cheap variable ND not only the contract lost but you can take fat cross line in you photo. Look out for the price maybe cheap but not the real one.

Thanks for this. I just got a camcorder bundle with a filter kit - they come with not information at all, and companies who sell them don't have any info on their websites either.
Regarding UV filters for protection: UV filters can have a very minor effect on color rendition. The reason for this is that the filtering effect doesn’t suddenly go from 0% to 100% at the threshold of visible to UV light. Rather, the filtering effect starts within the visual spectrum and ramps up to full effect within the UV spectrum. So if you want to use a filter solely for protection, use a clear filter instead. As the name implies, these “filters” are optically clear with no actual filtering effect at all. And as always, the better, more expensive clear filters are more truly clear than cheap ones.
Thank you so much for this! I'm new to photography, (frankly I'm a DAD) but am taking a trip this weekend to the Blue Ridge Mountains in NC and don't own a filter. I can only afford one at a time, so I'm buying the CPL thanks to this vid. Thank you!
I am sure, that if you compare a 30.00 to a 100+ would probably make little difference, I do not think would be night and day difference. I cannot seem to find a youtube video on difference.
Breakthrough Photography filters. Some of you may not realize this, but the warranty isnt worth the paper its wrote on. I bought 3 of their filters because of the warranty. The last one I bought was the night sky filter. Less than 2 years after buying it, the coating was cracking everywhere on the lens. Figured this wasnt a big deal since I thought it had such a great warranty. Turns out the warranty is only on the frame! I was told by customer service that the coating isnt covered under warranty. Send it in with MORE money and they will put a new glass in it. Horrible company and will never purchase or promote their crap again. If you need a filter, buy from a reputable company. NOT THIS ONE
Your video is great ! I'm figuring out what filter system works out best for me (every type of photo + video) Either a high end vnd for video + fixed filters for photos, or a very high end vnd magnetic system + cpl and mist for everything. I'm trying to get the best quality and convenience. Any tips ? Do cpl from hign end vnd work well ? With vnd's though I think you can combine less filters together that would would with fixed filters (for instance nd + cpl + mist)
Great and informative video. I love how you just get into it. I'm new to photography and bought myself a variable ND filter. As you said, the quality is not very pleasing, but it's all about learning right?
Thanks for the night filter example ! What abour the ir option that is included on some Nisi filter ? is it enough to do the job ? And what about the Kase clip in Night filter ?
Hello I've been trying to get efficiency from this filter for days. I'm bad at my videos. What should be the aperture, shutter speed and ISO settings on my camera? please help me❤
Great informative video . Please can I ask you some advice , I’ve recently bought a dji Mini 3 drone . It has a fixed Appature although you can adjust shutter speed and iso . Been it’s a mini drone the sensor is very small . I’ve been getting overexposed pictures at sunset even when I slow shutter speed right down , or I can’t see the land scape . The best I’ve managed is using its hdr 3 photo mode helps a bit . So I’ve been looking at what’s available and free well sell 2 6 packs , 1 pack has just ND I think 4 to 128 called all day pack , They also sell for a little more money a sunny day pack of 6ND filters with polariser incorporated in all the filters . I do prefer getting photos and videos on sunny days and with water in my pics , but I live in UK and we don’t get a whole lot of sun . My question is if I use a polorised ND filter on let’s say an overcast day , or with no water . Using the 2nd set of sunny day pack of lenses , Is there any adverse affect ? I don’t want to buy both sets of filters unless it’s neccery. Or do I need just ND filters if I want motion blur and my pics not overexposed ? I’m also getting in to photography since I started with my drone and when I get the camera I want I will go with the best filters you talked about . Thanks in advance and pls excuse my spelling !

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I was looking for a clear explanation of the use of these different filters and you've been the only one to have answered all my questions! :)
Yes of course, but that should be a backup option to a polarizer. The image quality will *always* be much better by removing the light reflected by the haze particles in camera rather than digitally "enhancing" the image to remove haze.
I can't think of a reason why a UV or ND would help unless you'll be shooting video and need to maintain a 180º shutter angle. The clear choice here is the CPL
Phenomenal video and breakdown. I’m a diehard fan of the X4 filters from Breakthrough as well. Question...is there a recommended order in which you stack filters? CPL 1st and then ND on top of that? Leave the Breakthrough X4 UV filter on the lens with the others stacked on it? Is the Breakthrough X4 UV filter even worth having? Thanks!

Do good quality UV filterlike Hoya hmc uv(c) affect image quality ?? Should I use it for protection from scratches or not ?? or just using lens hood is fine?

HI Great video! Thanks a lot! Is it ok to use UV Filter (just for protection of expensive lens) and Variable ND together (or Polarizer )? or the UV should be taken off before putting on the Variable ND (or the Polarizer)? Thanks.

I have a Canon EOS Rebel Camera and the older Canon film EOS Rebel, and what you don't cover is my category of camera in the context of quality is non-professional quality filters. I did find the discussion of types of filters very informative, but it is hard to see why I should pay more for a camera filter than for my eyeglasses. So, for me the issue boils down to whether or not to use a filter at all. My first thought was for lens protection and cleanliness, but your presentation made me consider a CPL filter. In actual practice most of our photos today are taken with our smart phones, and there are filter sets and supplemental telephoto and macro lenses for those too. I have not seen any reviews on those, but the space savings is substantial.
There are very cheap filter options on the market. If you saw what a CPL does in my video and you like that, then you can absolutely find a CPL that costs $30 instead of $250. The quality will be substantially less, but that's a choice you can make! I started out with a filter like that, and it was great for learning. :)
Yes sir I do! All my filters are 82mm so I only need to own one set. I don't really have a brand preference for step-up rings as they're pretty easy to make and there won't be many advantages/disadvantages to different brands.
