When many people start in photography they start off shooting in full auto because they are afraid to venture into manual. In this video you will see how easy it is to go from auto into manual. There is honestly nothing to be afraid of. You can use auto as a way to lead you into manual. The auto settings will get you close and the manual settings will give you more control.

My way of getting out of auto was going straight to manual. I stayed there for 2 years. You'll learn so well and you understand photography so much more. Teach yourself manual shooting and you'll get so much more out of your camera.

Good on you for hanging out with Lil! Btw, I'm doing film, absolutely an amateur. I just finally decided to jump in and learn to use my manual settings. Your videos are incredibly helpful. Thanks much!

This was by far THE BEST tutorial on RU-vid I have found so far!! I’m serious! Everyone has their own style, their own way of learning. I am a “book learner”. I have been reading, watching and listening to everything I can get my enthusiastic, yet apprehensive hands on. This video made back in 2011-2012 (I honestly don’t remember now, mobile doesn’t let you go back) has done more to kick my @ss into gear and pull the trigger on picking a damn camera and getting out there and start taking crappy photos so I can get better! Thank you!!! Truly, thank you for all of your years of amazing videos that I will spend months pouring over.

Thank you for posting his video Jared, I just bought a D3100 kit & 35mm 1.8 and I’m very happy with the D3100 system. After seeing your video, I’ve been using the Guide Mode as a starting point, then switch to Manual Mode and adjust the settings like iso, exp, and ss to my liking. I’ve learn a lot so far using this method. I enjoy your videos very much, keep up the great work.

Very helpful FroKnows. I didn't even know my camera would tell me the settings it shot at. Duh! Now I'm going to have to try the Manual setting. I'll make that my October project. Thanks for all your great videos. I'm considering a Canon EFS 10-18mm ultra wide angle lens next. Any thoughts on that?

awesome videos, thanks man!! would it be possible for you to put the two photos you are comparing side by side, or one after the other when talking about the differences, so that a beginner like me can actually see the subtle differences you are talking about? thanks again for the tips!

Froknow, no homo, I love you man. I use a mid-range camera (sony alpha 55)and was so scared to get out of shooting in auto mode. I saw this tut and started playing around with manual mode, now I feel more confident and can really TWEAK the shutter speeds to get better colors than auto. Thanks for all you do man.

I'm enjoying your videos. I recently bought a Canon sx 510 hs and am trying to learn how to use it. I started out in auto when I bought it, then moved to TV mode. After seeing this video I'm now practicing in manual. It's very cool, a lot more fun shooting than in auto. I'm also testing my manual photos up against the same picture being taken in auto... the manual photos are looking WAY better than the auto shots! Thanks man!

Bob Masiello Yeah it's the best way to learn, play with manual and then switch it to auto to see how similar you are to each settings. And then learn to tweak it the way you want it.

Omg ... thank you bunches Amazing I was thought photography by my dad by the age of 4. And I remember my first Zenit 😂🤣🤣. So imagine I haven’t touched one since I came to states 99. For me it’s a quantum physics now seeing digital camera After many reviews I got Nikon 3400 and some pictures look overexposure so I thought to do in auto , check settings , weather and copy than but you thought me how to improve it !!!!! I don’t see no post for last two years , don’t know if you still there but if you get to read one day - Thank you. Keep teaching

Nice tutorial for beginners going to manual, thanks very much, I hope I was watching your videos 3 years ago when I first bought my DSLR, anyways I would like to note that everything is manual except focus keep it auto, because some think that manual include manual focus and start training to shoot manual and end up shooting non-focused images. They don't put sonic motors in expensive lenses to use it while in manual focus, and when using autofocus it is easier and it will be sharp. :D

@MrJovabonito Depends on how good your camera is, usually you will be fine up to 3200 for mid range DSLR. if you got a D4 or something you can go a lot higher with less noise.

That lens is sooo pretty! I just have my d3000's kit lens right now, and it's nice, but I was trying to take pictures of the super moon out on the beach the other night, and as expected, they weren't as good as I wanted them to be. If only I could get a job :P Oh well, I'll learn to make this one work. Your videos are always soo helpful for me as a 14 year old getting started in photography :) Thanks!

Hi ! You mention using your Sigma 17-50 f2.8 lens ... I went shopping of course and found that there are several different Sigma 17- 50 lenses... Aspherical, HSM, APS-c...then there are the Tamron lenses are well. Which one do I need for my D7000? And not break the bank!? Lol... I would really appreciate your help! Your videos are great!! Thank you for posting! Trying to learn by reading material on the subject just not half as fun or useful as your posts are!

YESS!! I finally found someone who asked the same question. My camera doesn't handle high ISO very well that's why I shoot at 100. But when I do have to set it to max ISO of 3200, it looks sharp but tons and tons of grain and makes it look like crap. Do more expensive camera's lets say the D4 for example at a high ISO does it handle the noise and have no grain at all?

Hey Jared...I am getting a lot out of your digital photography videos. Great job and great content over a long period of time. I have a quick question related to raw file management. Do you use Adobe products exclusively for image manipulation and if so or if not......are there viable alternatives out there specifically for working with Nikon raw files?

Jared or anyone for portraits do you recommend choosing a single focus point on the camera to make sure it gets the eyes? Because on my 550D on multiple focus points it hardly ever gets the eyes and they are slightly out of focus. thanks

Just seems like youre not getting the cameras full potential and wheres the fun in just setting to auto and pressing a button for the photo! Although it's still rare that I actually get a nice usable pic lol but seems to be the best way to get started.
