Even if you are on social media, photography and every other kind of art is still alive. It is your own decision whether social media is simply a lookbook of YOUR art - the kind of art that comes from your heart. Or whether you create art with which you want to get the attention of others at all costs.

Part of the solution for me was not posting things on social media anymore. It felt like it was becoming a job, like I had to take images to impress other people not because I enjoyed it. I really enjoy and have fun taking pictures of my friends and family when we hang out, and got a decent printer and love sending people nice photos in the mail. It feels fulfilling and it captures nice memories. And the idea of going to shoot a sunrise really encapsulates it. Photography can get you out there. It can push you to the places you might usually not care to go to, at hours you might usually not be up, and when you’re there you’re just… present. Looking, feeling. It’s so much more than just mass producing “bangers” and sharing them on social media.

Peter Mckinnon: take a photo of the sunrise for no other reason but to take it, and do nothing with it... and then show all the sunrise photos in a video about doing nothing with the photos. Would have been more poinant had the video shown him taking a bunch of photos, and then abruptly end without him showing us the actual shots.

I hope to get a printer. It feels like the next logical step for me. So far Ive managed to keep social media posts to a minimum and I like it that way. I understand that its different when its a business and why I probably never will turn it into a business.

As an introvert photography has become a way for me to record all the instances in my life that have been outside my comfort zone. It gets me out in the world and it documents it. When we do things that are uncomfortable they tend to slow time down and with photography it lets you document this moment in time to relive later. Its truly a great hobby.

That thought of "what am i going to do with the photos after" or maybe "do i really need a picture of a sunrise" essentially "what can i gain from this" is what kills off motivation for a lot of people because the answer is almost always not good enough or isn't heavy enough to balance out the effort it takes to get up and get out there... but as we get older i think we are more wired to only do things and see worth in things you can gain something from like money, or to progress your career in some way... it's a shame we see fun as a waste of time or not worth making an effort for.

Thanks for this. I need to hear this message this morning. I'm a local video producer by trade, and have been careful to keep photography as a hobby and creative outlet... for me, not any client. I forgot that this morning. Another photography channel I follow recently called for people to share one of their photos that they were particularly proud of, so I sent one of mine in. If I knew he was going to select it for critique in the video he just released, I would have never shared it. He ripped it apart. I never claimed it to be any kind of masterpiece, but I loved the photo because it was very much a right place, right time moment I had the privilege to experience. He said it felt contrived. I forgot that I didn't take the shot for his or anyone else's approval in the first place. I took it because I wanted to get out and have fun, exploring the world around me through the lens of a camera just for the hell of it. No expectations. Thanks for reminding me that.

I'm sorry this had happened to you, I think of my photography like trading cards - the ones I value the most other people flat out 'don't get/understand' but they also might not understand what went in to the production of a photo that is near and dear to my heart. Keep your chin up, keep hunting for YOUR photos, and let the critics melt into the background!

Every photograph has a positive, a beauty or a lesson learned. You could tear apart the Mona Lisa or Michael Angelo's David. You have chosen to create, and without needing to see your photo, just the fact that you chose to create and share means I salute you @macgeorgeproductions The fact that the other person chose to destroy instead of uplift the positives says far more about them than it does anything you created - and now I want to see the photo! Photography, along with every other creative art, is subjective. Everything that someone creates and puts forth to the world, be it music, dance, writings, paintings, drawings, sculptures, etc. people will like it and people will not like it. Do it for you. Critique yourself and strive to learn and grow as an artist. Yes, other opinions may provide insight but it’s not the end all be all.

Peter, if I may, a short essay by C. S. Lewis absolutely nails your questions around 3 mins. The essay is called "The Weight of Glory". Here's a killer quote as to why I believe there's this ebb and flow within the creative arts: "We do not want merely to see beauty, though, God knows, even that is bounty enough. We want something else which can hardly be put into words - to be united with the beauty we see, to pass into it, to receive it into ourselves, to bathe in it, to become part of it." It's ultimately an eschatological answer. Please feel free to hook me up. God bless, Nick.

i just read this essay, what an amazing piece of work from the great CS Lewis, thank you so much for sharing this, i wouldn't have known about its existence otherwise. Truly changed my perception of what exactly we are chasing as photographers/ artists, and the realisation that i might never catch the thing im chasing but i'll just have a few glimpses of it throughout my life, and its these glimpses that i should treasure.

@@jippehiemstra my pleasure! Glad you were able to read it. If I may, Lewis’ essay is forcing us to think beyond where the very best creatives (and all of us!) typically “cap out” - ie at a sense of sheer wonder but also dissatisfaction at the sunrise etc., and needing to somehow do more than capture it; even setting the camera down to ‘be’ in the moment isn’t enough. The unsettling desire that’s within us as image-bearers of the LORD is, as Lewis says, that: “If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.” 🙏

I will be honest there was a point in my life of doing photography for 10+ years now that I got into a slump and I didn't pick up my camera for months and I felt this anxiety rush over every time I looked at my camera bag. But I would remember all the cool shots I took and all the memories I had with it and one day I said screw it im gonna jump back in and I have never looked back. seeing the shots im capable of doing now is crazy from when I first started. Seeing my growth in this, is my motivation. Knowing I am getting better and producing something good is my motivation to keep going. I of course ALWAYS have fun while shooting, I will never not have fun. The moment you don't have fun in your hobby is the moment it starts to lose its spark and love for it. This is your reminder to keep going and go do the things you used to do. Trust me you won't regret it.

When photography first appeared, statements were made that ‘painting was dead’ and there would only be photography. Well, as we know, painting lived lives. If it had not survived, many artists from Monet to Picasso and onwards would possibly have never put paint to canvas or board, and they were photographed and used photography. When digital appeared in sufficiently high quality, some pundits said film was dead. Film did not die and is currently undergoing a huge revival. When mobiles started to deliver high-quality images, articles appeared throughout the media saying that DSLRs (read cameras) were dead. Cameras are not and will not die. They will evolve and are and will continue to be used to make images, even if in a more limited way.

This inspired me in a different way than you intended. Yet, I find myself no less in tears, and no less inspired. In the last 2 years my life has been upended by a serious back injury leading to limited mobility, a wife now in fight number 2 of stage 4 cancer, losing my job and struggling to find our footing, etc. Photography as a hobby/passion has taken a back seat, hell I've even been on the edge of selling my gear at times. This video made me remember. The smell the early morning, the sounds of a place/location slowly coming to life and the energy surrounding it. It is such a unique experience at times. Thank you so much, Peter. I've been a fan for quite a few years at this point, you never cease to amaze and inspire. Thanks for helping me remember something I love. I plan on waking up early some morning soon and getting my sunrise photo, and I'll keep it to myself. I love what you do, and keep up the good work.

I took my first photo - of an elephant, when I was 8 years old. I am 75 now and still taking photos! I have a number of cameras, nearly all bought used from good outlets and find that it is my my creative input, however good or not that may be that makes all the difference. Don’t believe the hype that you need the latest camera or a certain number of pixels to take good photos, you don’t. It is all down to having an ‘eye’ and good composition. Think about a scene before you press that button and consider how to make it better. Even using a phone camera you can take fantastic shots!

I feel the same man... Since it became a job, it stopped being a hobby. I stopped carrying the camera with me and looking through it at life. Thanks for making these videos and giving us that small spark, that we need sometimes, to light the fire.

Thanks for the video and thoughts. Resonates with me so much. Having been a working photographer for 25years+ seeing so many changes, film to digital, photographers to ‘content creators’ have certainly fallen out of love with the ‘job’ And yes, sometimes need a reminder why I started and love it so much. 🙏

I had a realisation recently that photos outlive and are pieces of you. They’re your memories, your reality, your life, your perspectives, your friends and family. When you pass away they’re still around representing who you were, where you went, they tell your story when you no longer can. Keep on capturing your story.

I always feel hyped to do something creative after I watch your videos. I have been shooting for 25 years both film and digital. And I feel the same way as you do. You love photography and have been doing it for such a long time that it turns into a job and it is not your passion anymore but you still love it. But it is still a part of youy set up that you won't walk away from it because you still love it.

I really needed this! I love photography, but since about 5 years ago I've been on hiatus cause I just didn't feel like I was improving. I can make good photos, photos I can say people can enjoy; but I felt like I never felt satisfied with them becuase I feel like I platoed in my creative journey! But I watched this last night and felt inspired to brush the dust off my camera and just shoot for the fun of it. And I did the type of shooting I first feel in love with, night photography and sunrise and I don't know, I just felt at home. Now not all of them were bangers and the few shots I did great I kind of don't want to post them. Of course I'll edit them, but this feels like this is for me. This is my moment. Thank you for reminding me; the creative arts are more than just something to improve on, their something to enjoy (even thogh it is noble to want to improve, it shouldn't be at the cost of your love for the craft) and to communicate who you are: either to other people or even yourself if you're doing a little bit of soul searching. Beautiful video, beautiful shots! Love ya Pete!

Been here, been through the arc over 25 years. Hobby to pro, pushed that into a place where my creativity came to a place of contentment in my life and I didn’t have anything else to say any more. At first I thought I was burned out, and I was a bit, but eventually I came to understand it differently. Now all I photograph is my wife and friends. Simple record shots on my phone, and they are priceless and beautiful. Have fun. Peace out.

As someone who used to love photography, this hit me so effin hard in the heart. It’s felt like a chore this last few years. Thinking about what will make me money.. not what will make me happy. I need this. I have been stuck on will this be something that the public will like? Get likes on IG, but you said it perfectly. WHO CARES? My love and drive to create has turned into dread and over analyzing. Thank you.

He is so on point. Not only with photography people are nowadays doing it so much for other people instead of themselves. I’ve been to busy with work and other stuff and left my camera on the bench. I’ve been traveling last moth and was on a train station in Chongqing China and reflection on the floor made me realized I should pick it up again, as I enjoy looking at the world with the curious and creative eye. Whatever the equipment is. It’s not posting stuff for the likes but just the way you look to the world for yourself. Thank you Peter for this inspiring video. Hopefully it inspired more people to do stuff they enjoy than making stuff to impress others. Keep up the good work. Kind regards.

Now THIS is the Pete I miss. This too started as a hobby for me back in the early 90’s. When it evolved into shooting concerts and weddings, it felt like a chore. A job. Definitely took the fun out of it for me to the point where I didn’t pick up a camera for a very long time. Only recently have I started to rediscover this hobby I loved so much. I needed this video. What a beautiful video, man. I work as a digital designer and see so many similarities between the two crafts. "Photography is dead" - I sometimes feel the same about design. Thank you so much, needed this now

This is exactly where I am right now. I was totally drained a couple of years ago, after about 15 years of wildlife and sports photography, and my kit has remained in their bags since then, with only a few, reluctant ventures since. I've now resolved to offload everything and start again, and I'm really looking forward to it. 2:43 to 3:02 kinda sums it up.
