Day 2 of my landscape photography road trip in the diy converted 4x4 camper van. Things don't get off to a great start, in fact the day was pretty much a write off from a photography point of view. Things just didn't go to plan, but the thing with landscape photography is that every day brings new opportunities and challenges, which is why I love it so much. Enjoy.

You need to tighten the belt to the alternator or replace the belt :) THat'll fix your issue
@bradyspage
@bradyspage 3 года назад
Mechanic here. Also, if the vehicle have an automatic belt tensioner, it's worth looking at replacing. If it's worn and old it may not be putting enough tension on the belt, so when the power steering fluid is thick when it's cold the belt will slip a bit causing the squeal.
@andyblessett1282
@andyblessett1282 3 года назад
Squirt some WD40 on the belt on the pulley side, when you get the next opportunity get the belt tensioned correctly.
@denisgeorge9287

I was a shop owner for 40 years and was always fighting that horrendous morning belt squeal. Usually the alternator belt. As the belt warms up the squeal goes away. Gates is the manufacturer of the belts that causes this and they seem to have a monopoly on the belt market. You can try just tightening the belts and that will fix it for awhile, but long term I would switch the belts out with Continental or Bando brand. Then you will be done with that horrendous racket.

Worth watching just for the food. Looks delicious. Two import points you raise however are that tiredness blocks the impetus and sometimes the stress of searching for something makes you overlook compositions that otherwise stare you in the face. We've all done that and stressed about it too particularly when time is short at a location. Rushing around a location trying to photograph everything is my nemesis. Battery flat yep been there too. Watching this video is significant for me as it reminds me to slow down, not beat myself up and enjoy the location and if there is something then it will hit you. Thank you👍

Hi Thomas. I had a similar squeal with my Suzuki SJ10 (way back in the early 1980's). It was oil not getting pumped up to the camshafts quickly enough. Suzuki said they had a fix, but it would involve modifying the cylinder head and would be expensive. I had recently done an in depth article on oils for the agricultural magazines I wrote a lot for and had been really impressed, when interviewing the oil engineers at Castrol and Mobil with the then new 100% synthetic oils. So I decided to change the oil in my Suzuki to the Mobil 1 synthetic oil. The second time of starting with the new oil and the screech/squeal had disappeared and never came back for the next 10 years I owned the vehicle (staying with Mobil 1) and that included taking a year off and travelling, also all by myself, all round southern, central and west Africa - taking thousands of photos and writing articles. Give it a try. Cheers, Bruce

Thomas - for my alcohol stove I use 90 percent alcohol and it burns so clean and clean that you can’t see the flame so I put a bit of coloring in it just to see the flame. I also use a syringe to take the alcohol out of the bottle and put in the stove. Doesn’t spill a drop and after a while you get to the point of knowing exactly how much alcohol to put into the stove without wasting any. Keep up the good work...

Loving what you have done with the van. Those redundant rear seat belts would annoy me though. Then I thought you probably didn't want to risk removing trim and breaking clips. Hey Tom, the squealing will be the alternator belt; a quick and cheap fix but if not done a major problem. Your battery will not charge properly but more Importantly the alternator supplies all the power needed to run the engine, so your engine will just stop.

Replacing the gas struts with new ones will likely fix holding the boot up in the cold. There's usually a clip at each end and replacing them is relatively easy. Do be warned that without the help of the gas struts the lid will be 10 times heavier than you imagine it will be.

Great video mate. I'm sure there's a netbook that has a simmer and you can get pans for them as well

The key to good forest photography is walking and loving the woods. Spend time in the forest explore the woods and sooner or later you'll start to see compositions appearing where you couldn't see any before.

Standing in Walmart looking at camping stuff,came across a Coleman butane stove with adjustable heat. You could look into something like that? If not a camping store they would have one or something like it at a restaurant supply or the like.

Thanks for all the vlogs. Been watching since the first one and never get bored. Got me out of the house on many an occasion, I've even taken a leaf from your book and got an old MF film camera to both slow down and try something new. Keep them coming.

Alpkit BruKit - tried many stoves and this works well and good value - very similar to Jetboil but better value.

Sounds like the belt is squeeling. Try spraying some silicone spray lubricant or WD40 on the belts while the engine is running. Thanks for taking us all on your trips. Cheers!!🍻🍻

Love you man. You are fascinating and my "guru" with regard to photography. How I wish if I was atleast 30% of what you are. Keep up the great work. It will be great if you kindly say something about metering in landscape photography. All the best from India.

Get a Jetboil MIniMO or Sumo burner system. I love the boil time and the incremental adjustment capabilities of the burner. A 230 gram Jetboilf JetPower fuel canister (propane) is compact and will go a long way. It's a pretty penny but worth it. Don't get bogged down with other systems that absolutely will not measure up.

That's a shame, Thomas. I always have at least 3 batteries, usually 5-6. I have forgotten a mounting plate, which renders the tripod useless....Also, have left filter mounts behind because I thought it was for another lens (2 style filter mounts: Laowa & Nikon). I always derive value from your videos. I have over 400 separate pics of 1 tree: all times of day and all seasons... Thanks for your work!!

Love watching your vids dude. Nice chilled wind down to the day here in the Emerald Isle. I'm learning little nuggets that I can apply to my CGI Architrctural Rendering. Also busted out my DSLR the other day after watching your last video and found the joy of composing a shot again. Also love your honesty of how you go through the ups and downs of the day btw

Tom- Coleman makes a one burner propane stove, I don't know if you have the propane bottles in the UK. Having done car/van camping for awhile I suggest you get something low and stable. Cooking in a van creates a lot of moisture which may lead to condensation and mold in the van. If at all possible I like to cook outside.
