In this photography vlog I'm going to give you tips for photographing runners in a forest. I will do a comparison between entry level equipment (Canon T7i with the 18-55mm kit lens, the nifty fifty (50mm f/1.8 STM), and the Yongnuo 50mm f/1.8)) and more advanced equipment - like the Sony a7III with the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art and the 24mm f/1.4 Art. And I will also show you how to avoid high ISO noise.

It’ is what it is, too many photographers think they are the best artist since Leonardo Da Vinci and they are the sole reason for their images. The truth is quite a bit different 😉.

Hi Wolf, this is Alex Byfield. You know, the one who argues on PBG? As you know, I do nature photography pretty much exclusively, but have just ordered a Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM. I'm no fan of people photography, and this lens is praised much for portrait use. But, I thought it would make a great addition to my kit, for larger flowers. Also, if I ever wanted to start getting paid for portrait photography, at least I have an extraordinarily useable lens. :D When I get lens, I may try posting on PBG just to show how it is for flowers, since it took me a lot of searching to find sample photos for flowers with that lens. As you know, I agree with your views on kit. You can take photos that are great in some people's opinions with poor quality setup, but getting high quality shots does require high quality gear, with the skill and knowledge of course. However, I do try and explain to people that not all high quality gear costs thousands. High quality does cost more, but usually the other huge chunk in the price difference is aperture (especially fixed widest aperture zoom lenses), and zoom capability. Focal length does not seem to be as significant (except focal length range). Just look at the huge price difference between the Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM and their 50mm f/1.2 L USM. £125 vs £1,500. Although the latter is professional grade, I have no doubt that aperture is the leading reason as to why it's so much higher. I would love to see you do more of this kind of video. Still waiting for that 'Loo running' episode. :P
@wolfamri
@wolfamri 2 года назад
Hey Alex, oh yes, the loo running episode is still missing 😂😂😂. Thanks, I have actually planned a 50mm comparison but then time got into the way 🤦‍♂️😬. What you often pay for is sharpness wide open. E.g. the Sigma Art series, they are almost as sharp wide open as they are stopped down. The 50mm f/1.8 from Canon is OK wide open, but still a lot better stopped down. I personally like the primes for the shallow depth. You‘ll love the 50 f/1.4 for those flower shots. I forgot which cam you are using. If it’s a full frame, I would personally consider an 85mm lens for portraits. But for flowers, I‘d probably go with the 50 because it shows more from the background 😉.

@@wolfamri I ordered it from WexPhotoVideo yesterday morning, it's already here. Managed to get some photos before the sun disappeared. The Canon 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM is recommended for flowers by some, and I have it. My only issue is, it's too narrow an FOV for composition (in my opinion) on larger flowers, or groups of smaller ones. The Macro lens excellent for close-ups of small ones, like Violet. And of course, extreme close-ups of more specific areas of larger flowers and plants. The f/1.2 aperture is an interesting part, I don't think I've touched an f/1.2 lens before.
@wolfamri
@wolfamri 2 года назад
I love the macro mainly for insects, and when shooting flowers from a low perspective, similar to what you just posted in the facebook group 👍

Short legs long back. You must have some good Celtic genes somewhere in the family history. Always informative and thought provoking. How about a vlog on the sharpest lenses at the narrowest aperture (F22), I've never seen anyone do it that way around.

@@wolfamri There's also the Celtic foot, which is proportionately shorter and broader, and the propensity for round rather than long faces. We are of course all a mixture of migrating peoples and I think the Celts were probably the most genetically mixed of all the 'Ancient' races. Genetics is a minefield of trying not to drift into eugenics. I'm very pleased to be the result of a million years of trial by error relationships 😉

When u said gear and photographer skill both matter, I knew some photographers arent telling the full truth. Photography is about light (physics), there are ways to workaround certain limitations, but having gears indeed does help. AM I going to blow cash on full frame? No! Sport photography does demand higher spec gear, but for other types of shoots, grab some manual lens, shoot in manual, save a few buck, train up my skill and still get okay ish photo.
@wolfamri
@wolfamri 2 года назад
Absolutely. Both matters and for many types of photography, it doesn’t require the best gear.

You can take amazing images with literally any camera, including a tincan. But your gear dictates /what/ amazing images you can do. For some subjects you really do need a 1D and a $15000-tele...
@magnusmalmborn8665

The key to get nice gear as an amateur is to have an eye on the second hand market. It's still expensive, but it's just an arm now. Pro equipment that's a few generations old usually still beats today's consumer stuff hands down, for a comparable price. I got my first full frame for about $500-$600, a few years old D700. Loved it!
@wolfamri
@wolfamri Год назад
True. Unfortunately the used market changes too. Lots of scam, which is why companies like mpb are on the rise. They give a lot of safety, but you can hardly get real bargains. I totally agree on your other comment. If you want to get a good shot of the moon, basically all you need is reach (which can be had rather cheap). If you want to do sports, flying birds, etc. you need speed (focus and fps) or you get lots of crap, no matter your skills.
