I really don't feel you picked a good image to convert, it appears to have some issues caused by the lens and focus that are captured in the relatively high resolution. I'd rather see something like (for instance) the examples on the front page of the gigapixel AI website, and see how Photoshop super resolution compares, IMO this really didn't tell me how they comprare.

To get the best results from PS Super Resolution you need to directly process the RAW file (as opposed to the TIFF processed in this video), as Super Resolution’s AI models include sensor characteristics for up-scaling during demosaicing.

Thanks for that walk-through of the two methods. You've made up my mind. I've been thinking of getting Gigapixel for some time because I use a crop sensor camera for wildlife and landscapes. Getting a little extra sharpness and good noise reduction is something I think I'll appreciate. Thanks again. You're always so helpful.

I have (the usual disclaimer!) n9 affiliation with Topaz, just a user, but don’t think you will be disappointed. I was sceptical, as I see many are sniping at adverts, on the grounds of no such thing as that free lunch, but on most images it’s worked miracles. Being able to tweak and recheck sharpness against noise reduction as well as to select the x ratio or length/height has been very helpful. On the other hand DeNoise and SharpenAI are so good I don’t use Gigapixel unless I need a really big change of scale.

You are missing the benefits of Super Resolution in this comparison. It isn’t apples to apples. The ACR version, “Super Resolution” is able to do this at the raw file root and output to a full raw DNG file. It maintains any previous LR or ACR adjustments and also allows them to be changed after using Super Resolution. So no matter what noise reduction, sharpening or even transformation/cropping, etc that you do prior to Super Resolution, it is fully non-destructive and editable after the fact and not baked in if you are working from a raw file. I love the results I am getting from using Super Resolution at the raw level.

@@raminolta PS is software your lease with free updates as long as you continue to make the payments to Adobe. Topaz G AI is software you license once, and get a year worth of updates. If you never want to spend another penny, it will continue to work generally if you stay on the same OS version. After the first year, you have the option to subscribe to the updates which are I believe across all the Topaz products you've purchased.

@Photography by....Mark Myhaver - with Adobe Photoshop it isn't limited to only raw files that have this advantage of being able to reverse changes, edits or other detrimental modifications to your image. You can do that in any format as long as his it was edited in Adobe. It saves a catalogue of changes to the file in .psp/.psd format. You can do it with JPEG, TIFF, etc.

I have all three programs and find that SharpenAI is so good that I only need Gigapixel for big changes of size. And that DeNoise is so good I often don’t need to use SharpenAI ! I’m going back and reprocessing RAW files of favourites using DeNoise as a first stage to make sure I work on a clean (as possible) file then use Sharpen or a Highpass filter layer in PS, which lets me paint in or out sharpening . For example, when only a small part, like the stamen of a flower needs to be sharper, and to avoid accentuating noise or film grain.

Thank you very much. I would be curious to see the 4x or 10x in Gigapixel AI; is it 4 or 10 times 'better' or just like 2x with merely the ability to pixel peep at larger magnifications? I doubt that it will 'create' resolution out of thin air (in the sense that if something is not captured in the original resolution obviously no s/w can ...) - so in my thinking this is all just increasing the number of pixels for larger print/display (and that means amplifying any flaws too). Am I missing something?
@kronkite1530
@kronkite1530 3 года назад
From my experience of Gigapixel I think you are right. The higher magnified images aren’t sharper (as in 10x V 4x) just give that same type of sharpness and detail but in a bigger print.

@@dimitristsagdis7340 Ah, I wasn't trying to criticise it - just that making a 8x enlargement doesn't make it (at 100% ! ) sharper than, say a 4x scale-up BUT as it is AS sharp/detailed at EVEN that bigger size it is a win. In other words, from my experience, scaling up from 2x, 4x, to 8x etc. makes a bigger file, printable at larger size at 300ppi that looks just as detailed on screen at 100% or, more importantly on the wall. From Photoshop go file `Open as`, Select a file and then choose `Camera Raw` from the file type list just above the open button. This will open most files in Camera Raw

If it annoys you how Topaz software keeps "rendering" everytime you move the preview or everytime you make an adjustment, you can easily disable "Auto Update" anytime in the Preferences. Then you can manually "update" the preview only after making a series of adjustments. The "rendering" or "updating" is actually meant to be a real-time display of the effect of a slider adjustment, but it takes so many seconds to compute and display that it feels like a "render."

I tried Gigapixel AI against PS Super Resolution using a cropped bird photo from a few years ago and found a significant difference also; however I thought to make a fair comparison I should apply some sharpening to the PS output as I was pretty sure Gigapixel was also applying sharpening. So I ran the PS SP image through Sharpen AI and found the result was better than Gigapixel. Then to make the comparison as fair as possible, I took the original cropped image and ran it through Sharpen AI and then Gigapixel AI and compared that to the PS SP + Sharpen AI. The PS SP + Sharpen AI was still a little better but very close. I was using the latest version (as of Apr 29th) of both AI products.

To provide a clarification, the ACR enhanced resolution does add noise in the shadows of that image, and AI clear does not remove that noise adequately, but the DeNoise AI setting does, while still providing improved image sharpness.

I understand, RH, but he makes it apples-to-apples to come up with a simple answer. Your note says it all. There is no simple answer. Of course the PS process introduces more noise because it has no noise reduction. And yes, Gigapixal AI has MANY more controls (I own a copy myself). Good package but like all Topaz products, very slow. My own take is that PS super resolution is perfect for those 8MP cropped bird images that will become 32MP after super resolution. You can still apply noise reduction when needed. If you're blowing up an image to print at 40" x 60", you want Gigapixel. Dewitt Jones actually blows up cell phone pics really large and sells the prints for a fancy price!

While you stressed that you wanted this to be an apples to apples comparison, using the Architecture setting in GP made this an apples to oranges one. As you said, you could have sharpened the image in Lightroom or Camera Raw, but didn't. The Architecture setting in GP obviously adds sharpening (to a wildlife image) that made the final image sharper, although I would argue it added unnecessary artifacts of the blurred part of the image (see the rim around the eyes and the doubling of some feather strands). Also, you could have easily added noise reduction in either LR or Camera Raw, which would have easily been comparable to the GP result.
