This video was very entertaining to watch. Reminiscent of the times spent hanging out at guitar repair shops (lots of trash talk about guitars that you'd expect to not have any issues at all, and it has, for better or worse, skewed the opinions of certain high end guitar brands unfortunately). Anyways, the backstory behind this particular guitar in the video is that the guitar played fine and all the electronics worked perfectly upon arrival to the customer's home in Toronto. After a few weeks the weather changed and it adjusted the guitar. The customer brought the guitar in to Dave for an adjustment and didn't expect it to need a fret level and all. What Dave gets wrong in the video: 1) All of our guitars receive a fret level, crown and polish prior to shipping. 2) The fingerboard radius is 12" (Dave is surprised at the end of the video that the bridge radius matches the fingerboard radius, and that's because both are 12", we double checked with our radius gauges, too). 3) He is not familiar with Jerry Garcia guitar wiring, and so he plugs the guitar cable into the OBEL I/O Jack, and states there are electronic issues with the volume knob, etc. (unfortunately, there are now electronics issues with the guitar when there previously weren't any). With all this in mind, why did the guitar frets need to be re-leveled a second time? Well, the frets on this particular guitar were level and played well in our workshop, and perhaps the weather change and weather difference between Los Angeles and Toronto, likely caused what Dave is showing in the video. Additionally, this guitar played well upon arrival to the customer in Toronto. It's unfortunate to see a guitar get leveled twice when it was probably unnecessary. Dave contacted me after leveling the frets, perhaps he should have contacted me before? Also, there is a Phred Instruments customer service and support experience going on behind the scenes to ensure that the customer's guitar is playing great, plus we reimburse the customer for whatever the expense was to have his guitar worked on. If you own a Phred guitar, you know that customer service and satisfaction is a top priority.

Aaaand there goes the "backup tech" under the bus. That burden (if true) should never fall on the customer. If the product ships that means you stand behind the work 100%. If the backup tech doesn't meet standards of the regular tech, then you shouldn't ship until you find someone worthy. Definitely don't try to slide less than stellar work out there and publicly blame your employee if it gets noticed. Especially since you said yourself everything was great before it shipped. That was the moment you ok'd the "backup tech"'s work..so bringing up the story of the "backup tech" is irrelevant and kind of harsh for that guy (if he exists) ....I just dealt with the same story from my car dealership. "Oh sorry we thought your rear defrost grid lines were good, but it was our junior tech, not our usual tech"....if your junior tech can't run a multimeter, that's my fault?....seems to be a common issue...the "new guy" is always to blame
@PHREDinstruments
@PHREDinstruments 5 лет назад
Ed Bighead the “backup tech” statement has been removed from our comment. Our backup tech isn’t a “new guy” to guitar tech, but is new-ish to working with our guitars. Explaining a situation doesn’t to remove us from our responsibility to our customer.
@PHREDinstruments
@PHREDinstruments 4 года назад
@Le Spam I'm not sure exactly how you interpreted my comment as "it's all on the customer".
@PHREDinstruments
@PHREDinstruments 4 года назад
@Le Spam I can appreciate your perspective, as I too would be concerned and upset about a new guitar requiring additional fretwork a few days after delivery. As per my comment above, the frets were leveled by us, and the guitar played well prior to shipping. It's rare for a $1000+ guitar to require additional fretwork and setup after delivery, but it does happen. It's and unfortunate inconvenience for the customer, nonetheless, when it does happen, and yes, I've had to have the frets leveled on a $1000+ brand-name guitar in the past.

I own a Wolph by Phred and ive modded it myself. New pickups, brass nut, new bridge, custom brass p,ates with turtles and roses. Its my main guitar for 4 years now and I love it. But id say with the cost of the guitar and the parts etc i have about 1600 in it now. So ya have to consider that, but it nails the jerry tone. The guitar thru a twin into JBL e-120's is amazing, even if you are not looking to copy Jerry it has a unique tone that no other guitar ive played or own has. I own Gibsons, G&L, Ovations, Martins etc. Love these videos Dave :-)

I have a Langue-crock by the same guy (a phish guitar). It's super sweet. Here's the deal on Phreds, Olangs, etc. The bodies (and lotta times neck) come from China. They're the same ones that are for sale on Ali X. He buys them, puts the gubbins in them and sells them as Phred Guitars. So it's a real crapshoot as to what you get. The guitar was made in desert climate (Southern California) hot and dry, then went to Canada, cold and wet. The guitar itself must have shrank a half inch. Surprised the frets didnt pop out.

It's worth noting that because it's made in China, it's very possible the fretboard wood was still "green" when the guitar was built. Goes from China, to Southern California, up to Toronto....lots of potential for a fingerboard to get a bit wavy gravy and frets to pop free.

@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney
@The_sinner_Jim_Whitney 4 года назад
Adam Jarrett I think most people go to like the 17th, which seems about right to me. I go to where the neck meets the body and hold at that fret. In the middle, you want from about .006"-.014", depending on type of instrument and fretboard radius (the flatter the radius, the less relief you need, with basses getting slightly higher relief than guitars). When a feeler gauge will easily fit but has definite drag on the way in and out between a string and crown of a fret, that feeler gauge's thickness is the relief.

This isn't a replica of the Doug Irwin guitars. Irwin built Tiger, Rosebud and Wolf. This is a replica of Lightning Bolt, which was designed by Steve Cripe, and used by Jerry at the very end, like '93 - '95. Similar setup, with 3 DiMarzio SD2 pickups, each with a toggle to split the coils, and a 4th switch to engage the OBEL. After Jerry died, there was a lawsuit as to who got the guitars, because Jerry willed them back to Irwin. The band balked, and in the end, Irwin got Tiger and Wolf, while GD Enterprises kept Rosebud. Irwin sold both of them at auction for ridiculous money. Tiger was bought by Jim Irsay, owner of the Colts. Don't know if he still owns it though.

I'm a lifelong Dead fan and have almost bought one of the 3-4 Jerry models they sell on a few occasions. For less than a Mexican Strat I wasn't expecting a Doug Irwin original as far as quality, but I assumed it would be better than this! The Asian guitars have improved immensely over the last decade or so, but I guess "Phred" never got that memo. Glad I stayed away
@amityrockwell5162

Me as well. I use Mexican Teles, rout the body for 2 Dimarzio HBs and a single coil, battery box, build my buffer, drill a second hole for a stereo jack and solder away. They ALWAYS need fret leveling and dressing from the factory. It's a lot more work and it might even cost more but the results are worth the effort. I wish I knew how to attach a photo in a comment.

Phiga guitars is also amazing if want all the upgrades if/or if so then go with phred guitars it is unique and beautiful.. also Jerry guitars are not the main thing these guys focus on it is the Trey guitar copies I feel is their pride and joy.. It's a Phred Deadbolt which allegedly has 14 different tone combinations. "Inspired by" Steve Cripe's Lightning Bolt as played by Jerry Garcia. Jerry must have had a better memory than me. I struggle with the combinations on my Jazzmaster.
