The phrenic nerve innervates the diaphragm, making it an important nerve. Let's have a look and see how it runs from the neck and through the thorax and diaphragm. it also carries some sensory nerves from a few interesting nearby structures like the pericardium and part of the peritoneum.
What happens if the phrenic nerve is damaged?

Wonderful teaching videos, thank you. So clinical question I am not getting. Significantly elevated right hemi-diaphragm recent onset in the presence of dysphagia distant onset in an ANCA vasculitis patient. Not right vagus nerve dysfunction/paralysis but phrenic nerve or both. No worries, lots of health care on board. I'm just not clear of where the lesion(s) located. Can you comment?

What is more likely to happen? A not working diaphragm that asks for respiration-help from the Scalenes, Or the diaphragm is not working because of (irritated) the Scalenes? Just asking since I have TOS and my accessory respiration muscles are taking over - but the cause is hard to find (chicken-egg story)

Thank you sooo much for sharing this information. I now understand the myriad of pain/referred pain I have in my neck shoulders, arms. Glad I have had alternative medicine and taken herbs for some time now; I hope they have helped slow down the damages that could have resulted further by not attending to the pain in these areas, and "not just working on pain management", as the *only solution* as recommended by my physicians.
