Something I find odd is that TS2 has these ripple animations for water and such, and yet I get 0 lag from swimming pools, yet in TS4 whenever I build a pool on the lot the game slows down significantly. The performance dip is big enough that I stopped putting down pools at all. I am very curious why on earth that happens

From a game developers perspective, it my have to do with the shader used to display the water in ts4, in ts2 surface shaders were not as complex as they can be now, and usually consisted in one single difuse texture / color + roughness to make the looks of stuff, now however we are using different textures to make up the extra data for normals lightning, reflection, refraction, color,, water murkiness, etc Nowadays water if transparent may use a cameras Z depth texture to emulate depth based effects like refraction and murkiness, , wich is very expensive indeed.

@@RayznGames but it doesnt really matter no one actually cares that much to make games that run more stable smoother. Better art style, actually testing, fixing bugs in packs and the game before release will help.. they dont even care enough the to fix the bugs everyone is complaining about. I wish they had worked on and built a better game during the life span of the sims 4. the sims 3 open world, the sims 2 animations, gameplay etc. and the sims 4 graphics + create a sim + buildbuy along with some overhead with the optimisation and speed for modding and for the billions of dlc's that they eventually will release

@@RayznGames actually sims 2 and sims 4 pools differ only in normal map addition to sims 4 water surface. Might be that but i doubt it. Even a pc from 2010 should be able to run a shader like that. Maybe it's the planar reflections but again, sims 2 pools do those too. Most likely just bad coding on EAs part as it usually is.

I can forgive the sims 3 for "going back" and having less physics than the sims 2 because it was rendering and handling a fully open, fully customizable city and so much content and options. But the sims 4... with how much they reduced the game and how much they're cutting corners with almost everything, I don't know.

I read a comment about how sims 2 was detail focused, while sims 3 sacrificed details to focus more on the bigger picture. An example would be how in the sims 2 there's an animation for getting inside cars and the car driving off, sims 3 does not have them, but you can drive the car through the open world. I still appreciate sims 3 because you can tell the details were sacrificed instead of not being done out of laziness/cheapness like in the sims 4

@@olecal2213 Ang optimization issues. Seriously these tiny details make up a lot of CPU usage. The fact that the game is open world AND all the sims do stuff at the same time instead of one active household at a time? I love the details of TS2, and while I do agree TS3 had to sacrifice for the aspect of an open world, sadly it also scrapped the personality system, chemistry (attraction system), the relationship system, the memory system, and so much more. Don't get me wrong, I do still have fun with TS3, and absolutely am amazed that I can explore nearly every nook and cranny, but it was never optimized properly, ergo one has to have a high end computer with a high end graphics card to run. Not many people realize that TS2 was the first to introduce semi-open worlds in Apartment Life (modders have expanded upon that to entire hoods), without loading screens. I think if TS3 had instead expanded upon the semi-open worlds of TS2, it might have been more optimized (plus working on 64 bit, instead of the 32 bit).

To add onto the previous comment tho, even what we consider cape/clothes/hair physics in modern games however is also done in the same method that sims 2 does hair physics, but with more bones and more computations for directions and clipping.
@xFyrn
@xFyrn 2 месяца назад
Yeah, none of the games has actual physics, which would be a proper simulation of object A interacting with object B (example: Sim pressing down on couch). Instead the meshes were animated to accommodate the deformation. I mean 😅 Look at the Sim2 lady lean on the couch. The sofa gives way in a spot her weight isn't even bearing down on, while her elbow does, but it doesn't affect anything. They just used the same mesh deform animation as if she was sitting in that spot. One could argue that dynamic bones (Sims2 hair) could be called bone physics, too. As for the pool situation. 🤔 Maybe that's a simulation in Sims2. I'm not sure. But Sims3 and 4 have nothing. The splashing (Sim jumping in, floater or balls thrown in) looks like an animated texture to me. I don't even think those are particle effects/simulations. But to most people, all that is 3D-artist "mumbo-jumbo". What all these things are trying to achieve is simulating real world physics. One way or another. A mesh deform isn't a physics operation in the 3D-artist-world, but it can still simulate how a butt would interact with a couch nonetheless. So... to conclude... Sims2 put in a lot of effort to simulate real world physics (without actually using a physics system to do so). Sims3 omitted a lot of those interactions, but the bed one is more accurate/higher quality (I'm guessing simply due to higher polygon count of the meshes, which means a more accurate deform is possible). And then there is Sims4... Yeah... As I said... Some animated bubble and splash textures in the pool floating around. That's it. It's a "Downgrade" in effort. Yap, those are my two cents. (Sorry for any wonky English. I'm a bit rusty with writing stuff.)

Of course not, it would have been incredibly taxing for the computers at the time, and even today. However the fact that they went into the trouble of adding all those little details within the animations just proves how much passion The Sims 2 development team put into it, and is the reason why it's still the best in my opinion.

Sims 3 for sure had more varied and fleshed out game elements, but Sims 2 has always felt like the best game for building stories and lives and characters. (Especially since I can just add CC for the things it's missing like more varied body types, skins, different time periods, etc)

I understand why Sims 3 didn't have some of these physics because of the Open world and how it was built on a much bigger scale than Sims 2, however Sims 4 has absolutely no excuse because they literally removed the most performance heavy parts and yet it still has the least details out of the 3.

I understand why the water detail was reduced for both The Sims 3 and 4 because 3 had an ambitious open world and had to accommodate that and 4 was trying to optimize for lower spec PCs but I am sad with how lack luster that splash effect was in The Sims 4 :( The splash in The Sims 3 being so grand more than made up for the lack of movement in the water! I would actually love for you to compare the visual effects in the games some day! Like the splash from jumping in the pool or the fire in a fireplace! The styles of each game are so varied it'd be fun to see side by side!

@@keit99 I agree they definitely could’ve had more detailed water, at least at this point! They updated water twice with Cottage living and Island Living but neither were really the overhaul they needed. From a developer point of view, ts2 is easier to add details since it only work on each scene separately which is your lot, when making a game to run on much bigger size will be a lot harder to add any details let alone fixing bugs in a bigger scale like ts3 ts4. So difficultly of making ts2 is like 2/10 while ts3 ts4 are like 7+/10.

As someone who’s followed the franchise for a good while, who has all of the games nd bought most on release. The sims 4 will always be a huge let down for me. Sims 2-3 all the way, they’re the only games in the franchise (along with sims 1 sometimes) i can play for hours on end without getting bored. Small details in games matter to me, that’s why i love the sims 2… The game just feels so alive and real despite the graphics not being up to date. I love no loading screens and being able to see sims living their lives, and that’s why i love the sims 3. You can tell with every installation in the franchise the love just got sucked out of it. The attention to detail, the things you’re able to do. How alive the games used to feel compared to how empty they feel now? Atleast to me… The sims 4 is just janky. I kept buying the packs hoping it would get better but it never did. Can only imagine what the sims 5 will be like if it’s cross platform, they’ll probably sacrifice alot for it. I can only see it going downhill from here.

My perfect The Sims game would contains: details of animation, relationship system, genetic, memory system, personality affects behaviours, desires and fears from Ts2 (upgraded a bit ofc), gameplay content of ts3 (maybe some ideas of ts4 but defo not implementation), the world maps from ts4 but a little open worlds in "neighborhoods" so there won't be loading screen when going to buildingsnext to our sim (like in the sims 3), CAS from ts4 but with color wheel for each part like ts3, traits system from ts3. And design could be ts4 like because I kinda like it But it's EA it won't happen

mhhh idk, calling the couch/bed part "physics" would imply that the furniture would directly react to any impact individually. But I don't believe that there are elaborated collision physics implemented in any of the sims games. From what it looks like, in all sims games they just added animations for each furniture "with physics" and the correct animation plays if certain conditions are met (Sim interaction, sim age/size, if another sim is there etc.). Of course I have no idea if my observation is correct, since I don't know what the code/game engine is actually doing there. But since only SOME objects display animations like this only in certain situations, it seems pretty likely that these are just furniture animations without actual collision effects. Now with the pool I'm not sure if this was made without collision features, too, because it looks pretty convincing! However, a water reaction animation (+particle effects) would be possible, because if Sims jump into the pool they'll always land at the same spot, since everything in the sims works in a grid system, so it's easy to align the animations there. Regarding the Sims 2 hair, that's definitely physics in effect right there! I assume back then they added joints to each hair style to make it work. I wonder, does CC hair float like this too? I doubt that CC creators would always think of or know how to add this type of joints to their hair meshes.

I keep reading that Sims 2 was made with passion... Every sims game was made with passion otherwise it wouldn't even sell one copy. If you people don't realize sims 2, and 3 are not properly optimized to the day, and ever since I remember those games take various minutes to load just the main screen, where as of today sims 4 runs much faster in all aspects of the game, ironically faster than even sims 2. My take on this, is that everything they took from the sims 4 that was on previous games, was taken on account of optimization, and I actually can see how all those silly and small animations would take more memory o make the processor work harder. For me it's actually very surprising that a game from 10 yrs ago with all its expansions loads much slower than a game from today that has three times as much content, but its a fact, Sims 2 and 3 are not well optimized where as sims 4 it is, very well optimized to work even on a half baked gamer laptop like mine.

What i don't like in sims 2 is that it doesn't have aliens WITH abilities, mermaids and fairies but other than that, it's superior to all the other sims games even though sims 4 does have the best create a sim and sims 3 has open world.

We can forgive sims 3 has some details missing due to its ambitious scope of the design, so some sacrifice had to be made. I cant say the same for sims 4 thoooo.....

TS2 might look better from a distance but up close that couch physic animation is terrible. The couch deepens but the sims hovers above it. While it might be nice to see pool water swaying, in reality it is stagnant unless ppl are swimming in it. TS2 pools look like they are on a ship or something.

TBH, they chose the worst couch to show as an example. That one has a bizarre shape and is just kinda janky in general. But for most of the couches the dip is much more reasonable

I love Sims 2 because hair physics move, couch move, water wave 🌊 like more detail are better than Sims 4! 😫😭 I wish Sims 2 (Will Wright/ old employees team work on Sims 2) they work on Sims 4 like more detail same as Sims 2.. 😭😭😭

At least the sims 3 had a good excuse to be less detailed but sims 4 just simply unacceptable

Just like any of the rest of these videos in the series, we already know how it’s going to go. Sims four is gonna be the absolute worst. The Sims three is going to be hit or miss the Sims two is going to be the best and the Sims one is either gonna have it or not.

the sims 2 is easily the best sims game. from attention to details to entertaining gameplay, it doesn't feel at all like you're playing a game that was released 20 years ago. the sims 3 is also great, and the lack of certain details are comprehensible as it's open world and has a lot of in game content (although that can be a bit overwhelming sometimes). and the sims 4 just sucks. it has no excuses to being that awful. the gameplay feels empty no matter how many dlcs you have, the game itself is pretty ugly imo and it just gets boring. after a while of playing, it feels like you've already done everything the game has to offer. sims 4 sucks and it's a shame that so many people (myself included) wasted money on it because they didn't know how much better sims 3 and sims 2 are than sims 4.
