Hey....what about PiCore player and Logitech Media Server.... They are Free and better. Also snakeoil server with Logitech Media sever is the best sounding server solution.
I wanted to build one but I'm from South East Asia and everything seems hard to get. Was wondering if there is anyone have a fully built up version that can let off to me. Thank you very much.
I built something similar and used a HiFiberry hat with this case. I did have to modify the case slightly to allow the coax out to fit the case. I’m also using a usb splitter with one power supply for the screen and the RPi. It’s a pretty cool setup.
Great video John, Smart pi touch pro case, allo Digi one hat, with a standard pi 4 power supply works great. The case comes with a splitter. I never get a low power and one cord. Dead silent with ropieee and controlled with roodial and a PC.
A big fan of the versatility of Raspberry Pi, I have one powering my home entertainment system using Plex and another one powering my smart home using Home Assistant. Thanks to you, I will now using one to compliment my audio streaming too!
To reduce the number of power cables, use the jumper cables with the display. Use a power supply that provides atleast 3amps 5v on the usb C and the power low message will go away.
I love my Pi 4 with the Allo DigiOne Signature HAT. I'm only disappointed that streaming Qobuz is almost impossible with Moode, have to pay extra with Volumio or other options are way too complicated.
Nice ! Will there be an audio review of the Pi-Fi ? It will be interesting to learn about the sound quality, and how it compares with other streamers or HATs.
You just made me nostalgic for my modded Squeezebox Touch. Great little gadget and my first proper streamer. Gone up in the world now with an Aries G2 feeding a Terminator Plus but, as they say, you never forget your first, especially the excitement of having all the music all the time at the touch of a screen.
Additional Tips: 1. Use the Flirc USB receiver to be able to control play/pause, next/prev track using an IR remote. This needs to be configured in the Ropiee configuration page. This is pretty awesome as you don't have to unlike your phone/tablet every time you just want pause the music or skip tracks. 2. Use right angled adapters for cleaner cable routing, I use two USB-C adapters for power, one USB-A adapter for the DAC connection, another for the Flirc remote receiver connection and finally a ethernet adapter. You might also be able to find cables with right angled adapters. 3. To solve the display angle problem, keep the unit upside down! You'll need to jerry rig some kind of support to keep it standing. I use an Audioquest binding post wrench and some blu-tack :-).
Darko I see you use a Pi a lot, and pre-built streamers. What do you think about using custom built server PC’s? Lots of chat about ‘noise’ from more heavy PC builds. (Heavyweight CPU, PSU etc). I’m building a NAS and want to add a card such as JCAT to output to a DAC. Thoughts?
Nice. I packaged up my Squeezebox Touch and put it back in the box after replacing it on my bedside table with a touchscreen & pi & dac hat, because they were more stable and capable than the squeezebox. I tried volumio, but switched to PiCore player after not being able to get volumio to access files on the LMS server in the basement. I always suspected that volumio could read an LMS server elsewhere on the network, but could never find out how to make it work (there's lots of info on making the volumio be an LMS server, I could not find any for volumio as an LMS client).
Hi Darko, i Need your help... I Need to know of Is It possibile tò cast Amazon Music by using DNLA (bubble upnp on the smartphone) versus a Raspberry with Ropieee XL installed in. Which Is the maximum resolution? Thank you very much
So tempted by this, but the annual subscription for either Volumio or Roon is the biggest impediment. The visual element is great and using the Tidal, Qobuz, or Spotify media *without* an annual fee would make this a killer option. The allure of Roon is lost on me, even after a recent trial. $120USD a year for the nice interface on top of subs for whichever streaming services one uses. I just don't get it.
I like your videos! But I think the system will work even with another cheap screens too. You just need to install the apropriet driver. Of yourse if you plug in the the OEM screen then it will work out of the box...but you get cheaper solutions too....and then it's a more better and cheaper solution :) The driver install is not for greenhorn but with a little readings everibody can do it...
I am getting confused....in case one is looking for cheap tidal streamer this is 200$solutin plus about 50& per year...for subscription so you have tidal connect. In the same time you could buy ifi zec streamer that arguably is the same teck maybe slightly better but no need to pay for tidal at all....so in 2y you will basicly will be on profit....i am looking for a streamer to play tidal to my non MQA arcam irdac but i do have a hard time to find a good product on a well put price....
i'm realy irritate by this wonderful videos about volumio. i have had used to use volumio on different pi's , but never i've got these smothe results. volumio interupts loading the data, is breaks up displaying cover or artists picture screen. and that all not only on a pi3, it also repeted on pi4 with 8 gb. and that's while 2 gb only necessary. so far, for me it is'nt a solution for my hires audio hifi.
Hi, do You plan to review Wiim Mini on video by any chance maybe? Super convenient device for the price, especially when raspberry is so hard to get now.
Yeah, I needed a low-cost streamer for the den. Thought of a Pi but they are non-existent here in the U.S. (or going for 4X their usual price), so I bought the WIIM Mini. Works perfectly fine with Tidal Connect, especially since the firmware update to lossless via the Toslink optical output. I'm using it to feed the DAC inside an A/V Receiver and it is working well for that application.
is there a way you can just turn on the ras pi and it only plays out the speaker kinda like the google speaker! i want to create my own radio station that plays only my music for my fans
Not sure. Maybe the USB output of the Pi is better than most Android tablets? That is just a guess. Roon likely is the main reason. John is definitely in the Roon camp.
Love this idea. When the Raspberry Pi 4 4GB comes down to its normal $55 USD price instead of the current $200 I'll consider building one. Curious how the USB output of a Pi 4 compares to the Lightning port of a "decent" late model Apple iPAD as you used in a previous video? Great video by the way. Loved the presentation and clear instructions. Not getting bogged down installing all those additional jumper wires in order to power the assembly with one PSU would make it far easier and as you noted, allow it to power an external DAC.
One problem with volumio is if you play dsd files it has an issue switching from pcm to dsd. Other than that it’s a great solution not only for spotify but also your music library.
Speaking of hat based players, is it possible to get a screen to a player like Allo Boss2 Player or Allo Katana Player by using the micro HDMI port on the RPI? thanks.
I'm not 100% certain but think hdmi might not work for touchscreens, I.e.you could output signal to the display but not receive touch commands back to the RPI. Not helped that the PIs ribbon connector for screens (used to/still?) only work for the official Raspberry screen, crazy IMO. So with dac hats using key pins getting aftermarket screens attached/connected was a challenge I had - solution for me was RpI3 + IQuadio dac hat + DFRobot USB 2.8" touchscreen (ironically I rarely control the unit via the screen). The screen sends/receives signals and takes it's power via one USB cable to the RPI. This was set up in 2018 so options may have changed since then but my set up is still running today using LMS, Jivelite and Squeezer for multi-room music via main hifi and 2 Logitech SqueezeBox players. Jivelite I tweaked as std coding didn't cater for 2.8" screen
Instead of a mounted Touchscreen I am using an old android Tablet. Type in the IP of your Volumio Device and you have a wireless Touchscreen with all the Features.
this is to stream via the Wi Fi. So basically you don't need to plug in your ipad, you can just connect to your wi-fi, play a song then the streamer will convert the signal into your speakers wirelessly.
There's not a price or function advantage to doing something like compared just buying a fire tablet. But you're doing it yourself, however you see fit for various design decisions. You're doing a lot of it yourself, learning a lot along the way, and probably (most definitely) making mistakes. But that's the point!
If your dac is wired to other equipment e.g.stereo your ipad/tablet is limited to it's wired connection to dac? With RPI doing the streaming you're free to use the tablet in any room and still control the music via whatever app. you use.
Volumio is a nice polished OS for the Pi, but I really don't like the subscription model for what is essentially a pretty UI. I have a pi which is running Spotify connect, MPD, Airplay 2, Tidal Connect (MQA) and a few other functions. It's headless (so no screen). It's not quite as plug and play as Volumio, but all of the features that Volumio lock behind a premium subscription fee are readily available for the pi to install for free.
Thanks for this upload. I'll dabble on Raspberry Pi. Currently I have an iPad. This iPad is connected to an HDMI Audio Extractor. Extractor is connected to Receiver via Optical. HDMI Audio Extractor's are plenty in Amazon. I bought one for $35 USD.
Using my 65" Sony OLED TV + NVidia Shield ($200) + Schiit Modi Multibit DAC ($250) going to an AMP for Hi-Fi goodness. Android TV OS can do Plex / KODI / VLC / Amazon Music with USB out from the Shield TV Pro.
i don't see the use for it , especially when Spotify launched a dedicated device called "Car thing" for around 30$ , but it can also use on your desktop
Hi Darko...I'm having a problem with getting the screen to display the correct timezone, it's default setting is Amsterdam, I'm in the UK and it won't let me change this setting. Every time I hit apply after changing to Europe /London, A bubble appears over host name, asking to match the requested format. The name is the same as " welcome to ropieee running on" etc etc etc. Any ideas what the issue might?
Will the R-pi also support disc playback via USB optical drive the same way it supports the topping dac? Someone ought to design a "hifi rose" style enclosure where all you need is the R-pi with a HAT DAC & disc drive. BOOM! Streamer DAC & Disc player all in one. Then Shove it up the arse of that $1k+ HiFi rose!!!
Don’t know what it is about you doing the building and explanation of these things but they’re super relaxing. I’d be happy if you made a second channel just for building stuff ha
Ok as a Spotify user there is an easier way to have it on a Display. I Start Spotify on my Smartphone and Tablet. Than i connect my Smartphone over Spotify Connect with my Yamaha Receiver. I can now Play Spotify on my Receiver over my Phone and see the Interface on my Tablet. Works great!!!!!!!
The simple answer is the cutouts would not be lined up. But I did think the same thing in the Fall, when I made my Roon endpoint with a screen. Couldn't they just design the screen cases 180 degrees rotated in the first place? Sure the cutouts would be on the other side, but so what, eh?
Amazing!!. Dude can you tell me what would it be the cheapest option to have tidal connect?i have a onkyo reciever and it's the only thing missing function for me.. I have raspberry also but volumio now it's expensive for only tidal connect function.. Thanks in advance!
Great video. Funny you should hark back to the Squeezebox Touch.... the technology is not quite dead yet! As someone who upgraded to an Innuos server/streamer I can still use my Touch for Now Playing (for music stored locally) and navigation, much like the Pi-Fi, and also use an IR remote. (I'm not sure if this would work as well, or at all, if the Innuos were configured as a Roon Core; or if it may also work with other server/streamers.)
nice vid as always John, never really understood wanting a touchscreen streamer/digital playback device although plenty seem to like the idea like you said. We've had remote controls for decades now so having a fixed touch interface away from the seating seems a bit retrograde.
I understand where your coming from. But please explain to me how with a traditional remote control (i.e a bar shaped device in x size) you will navigate an entire "modern library" of digital music with potentially hundreds if not thousands (connected to Tidal etc. service) albums and singles without any sort of visual feedback ? Cause if you can solve that for me, hell I will take your traditional remote control. Currently , the traditional RC only works best in more traditional applications where you have inserted a single piece of media, as in a CD.
How is this better than a used tablet for 50€ in which you put all apps you want like Spotify, weather, etc. I feel like this for what it doesn't make sense to me. Can someone please explain to me why I would choose this instead of an old tablet? + no subscriptions.
I would love you to a. Try JRiver Pibox software b. Get an old black/silver hifiPc component box or a small nice wood box rip out guts and cram all this into thereby hiding the wire spaghetti in some stretchy mesh cable management solution…..or not still enjoyed watching
Hi - It would also be nice to talk about one or more of the non subscription distributions. Especially in view of your recent Squeeze-box touch videos, perhaps piCorePlayer would be interesting.
It's all so convoluted. I stream tidal from my phone via a node 2i and that crashes/fails to connect/gets stuck regularly. I imagine this setup Darko is proposing will also fail/crash/freeze regularly........so much work and potential for frustration to simply listen to music!
I like tinkering and have a few Raspberry Pis and BananaPis here...but I don't quite understand this use case scenario (aside from Roon, at least for spotify Connect etc.) yet. Why shouldn't I just use an iPad Mini or similar and save myself all the fiddling?
Just decided to remove the original pi 7 inch display from my pi volumio music streamer. The original pi display has such a bad resolution causing it to show the volumio gui in a really bad state. Will use the set, raspberry pi 3 + allo boss dac, using my phone or tablet only.
lol i did my version many years ago but.... with an integrated dac. now i've a better version based on a pi 4 with a audiophonics double dac and... a deported touchscreen to control my player qho's connected to my nas. i also made a touchscreen hifi player with an amplifier for my brother's wedding
Hello! Great review! Tell me, is there a good external DAC, does it make sense to use a linear power supply for a raspberry streamer with a hi-fi coax and toslink digital output board only?
You guys have to know that sd memory card can age fast. Therefore anyone using sd card as OS with heavy read and write must be ready for sd card failure in the future unlike ssd that has longer lifespan. Perhaps better quality sd card needed.
I wish the official screen had slimmer uniform thickness bezels, Come on, three! different bezel dimensions? The super rounded corners are a turn off too.
I see no use for screens on gear if you can just use a smartphone app to control everything from the couch. Can't justify the cost and it probably introduces more noise to the signal. Why is it upside down?
Streaming! What a terrible idea... Wait till you get sanctioned and maybe then you will realise that this is an idea that should have never gained traction....
