How to teach the piaffe in hand. In this video Joseph talks about the very beginning of piaffe in hand training. This video focuses on leg lifting in the Crossties. Slowing down with the horse and teaching them to lift and hold the legs.

Extremely educational. I like how you compared teaching this to your horse for the first time to letting a little kiddo scribbled with a pencil when you first begin to teach them to write. I really like your heart in all this !

I love your support and awareness of him as you are training! He yawned and licked his lips as you were giving him time to destress ❤

Great info. Believe it or not, I used this technique to teach my boxer to go one step at a time into the pool. I am already in the pool and tap with my hand. He lifts and I place the foot. He backs right down the steps now that he is 3. Then, lots of cheese puffs for reward. 😁

How lightly is the tapping? He doesn't seem phased by it however he catches on quickly. Would it be okay to use the dressage whip's thicker end to do the same? Saw you using that approach in a video sometime ago. How often doing it? Once a day or more often?

maybe if the horse isn't used to commands like these, you have to build up also the sensitivity to the aid - start with a clear command that's difficult to ignore and once they answer consistently to that, move to a softer command. Not a trainer, but as a behavioural biologist that's how I read Joe's approach.

Q: since most horses are heavy on forehand and light in hind-(imbalanced) would lifting hind not put horse more on the forehand? What are you trying to accomplish with this exercise- as in biomechanics (I know the goal is piaffe).

Interesting thought. For sure some truth to this. Trying to teach alternation quick hind legs to find rhythm

How come tapping on front of right hind leg but back of left hind leg? Wouldn’t you want the aid to be the same on both legs?

The moment you picked up the broom, I saw his eyes flicker like "Are you going to hit me?" I think that it would have been really good for you to take the time to show him the broom first so he could see it, smell it, and then maybe you could move the broom over yourself so he could see what it is and that it didn't hurt you.

@@dawnaustin4556 Well, I guess that just means that patience has to be at the forefront of his training.

Excellent observation. Any object regardless of what it is needs to be accepted by the horse. When I started this work I just let the horse play with the stick and then next day do the tapping slowly is the way forward.
