Great vid. Thx! Christian, I know what you like. My sister is called Piaget, and she literally has a golden smile, thanks to her dentist. She's a genuine 70's vintage piece. She's totally available, and only for PRX money. Now that's an offer your going to struggle to refuse.
Piaget is so disappointing. They could be competing with Cartier for the elegant, classically-inspired market, pushing into the higher end with stone dials and precious metals and leaving the mid-range for Cartier. Instead they're a footnote while Cartier holds court. And those seeking out high end gaudiness will just stick with precious metal Rolex or AP.
lol Cartier can never be compared to Piaget. Cartier just sold ballon bleu, Santos and tanks with entry prices, poor finishing and movement. They have the prestigous CPCP brand before but it is all history.
I agree with nearly all of this analysis, except (again, being the Vacheron nerd here) with the 222 price analysis. It’s only ~retail because a) they raised retail 20% to be closer to market price b) they are producing more to meet demand because VC corporate doesn’t want “waiting list” models.
This was actually a well spoken and thought out opinion piece Christian, well done. Sometimes this is a nice change from all the jokey banter on some other videos
Given the recent popularity of the vintage polos this is a good move because they are watching the market. But the price is a joke. This should in the high 20s to low 30s to competitive with the day date.

I love it. Never going to own it. And i Totally disagree, the Mens round is better than Mens sqaure. Also You have to calm down. It’s a gold watch so it immediately eliminates 2/3rds of the market. Also looking at everything through the secondary market is pretty specific to the fact that you sell there. And by the way there aren’t that many out there, Because i looked. So. It has materially helped Piaget, because I actually looked at their watches. Who cares. But yeah it’s too expensive
Why not buy an Omega gold watch , especially the new gold Omega constellation with the meterorite dial that they just came out with. The new Omega is half the price and is 41 mm with more gold and with an integrated bracelet
Don’t really understand judging a release based on it’s secondary market value and its success to Piaget ? Assuming they have sold out then it is successful
They're only making a few hundred, they are already sold out to Piaget collectors (at 74k!) - And they're probably setting up the launch of the square version...and you think the guy's upstairs are in trouble?
I dont care about Piaget or follow anything they do... but if it sold out, I don't really understand the point of this video... if it sold out, then it must not have been a failure. These probably cost under 15k to make, so they're making a huge profit on each one, times at least 100 watches. Doesn't seem too bad to me.
At current gold prices this watch costs the manufacturer over 16K dollars. That’s not even getting into the watch itself which has a highly decorated thin movement with a micro rotor. Too bad Piaget chose to make this a halo watch priced astronomically for a limited few rather than a viable option for the merely well to do but it’s delusional to think this watch cost no more than 5K to make
Gorgeous watch. I had a professor who is now 83 and still wears the round version from the 80s, which he bought in Europe. It’s a stunning watch. The asking price is insane, it’s worth 14-18K.
@@ThisIsTaco1 as he says in the video, you are instantly loosing 30% of the value when purchased new, I really do like the watch and I am planing to buy one if I am able to find a mint one, worn a few times, for at least -40% from retail...
@@ThisIsTaco1 given all the brands’ recent price increases, even 25-30k doesn’t seem realistic anymore. But I think going above 40-50k shrinks the potential market for this watch to a truly tiny group of buyers. But I guess they only need to find 150 people across the world and there’s a lot of rich people out there with questionable judgement
That Piaget Polo 79 is beautiful.. The chunky squared edges with a round dial is an amazing design. The 200g of brushed gold.. I'd say others should search for more photos online, he even mentions Hodinkee's review.. 👍 (except the 2 stock photos he shows over and over again here.. in same type of lighting 🙄) esp. ones in different lighting setups, daylight, etc. (like he seems to have no problem doing with the AP 12:24) Polo 79 looks awesome.
Being an older gentleman I have a different perspective on that. Piaget was an amazing brand a few decades ago. It had great presence and was known as a jeweler but also a watch brand. This is very important to understand Piaget’s business model. They lost their way in the watch world (like many other brands) in the 1970’s. Richemont bought the name and rescued it. Piaget is today, still mostly a jewelry company, not a watch company. I think that the few models that they manufacture are beautiful and worth a look. I do not expect them to produce a crazy new design (I will leave that to newer brands like MB&F, RM, FP Journe etc.). Piaget is a reputable name with a long history of making beautiful objects (watch among them). Look at it this way and your opinion may change. Anyway, it is never a failure when a person like you talks about the brand Michael. Your review is a win for the brand and I like the watch. Do I like the square version better; yes. However, I would not discard this model.
90% of the watch market is uninventive. Who cares about Piaget’s gold watch, it’ll be fun to see Lebron flaunt it thinking he’s a horological mastermind
Tell me you secretly don't "like" Piaget while telling me you do over and over.. 😂 11:00 I'm sure you meant the Nautilus (not the "Aquanaut ripoff").. but maybe didn't want to be called out for the glaring contradiction that the Nautilus was in fact heavily influenced by the earlier AP Royal Oak.. 🤔
My opinion is they made it too cheap. Why not go all eccentric, all decadent. They should have put it above the 222. Like 200K USD. Why not? It should be an ultra luxury item. The square would have been better I agree.
Calm down bro. It’s just a company & this is jewellery that does an ok job of telling the time. You sound like you’re shorting this company 😂 One thing I like about this release over the vintage examples is that these have not been removed from the corpse of a low level 1980s drug mule.
I absolutely love this watch but everyone I've shown it to is like what are you talking about. I think it's hard enough to explain the brand in 2024 let alone this model. I think they need to really up their exposure and why thin is cool before this watch makes sense to the masses.
Piaget priced itself out of the market. At $15,000 with no discount exclusively at the boutique they would sell a tonne of these. When I saw the $74k price I immediately laughed and thought to myself forget it. Regardless of how beautiful this piece is, no one will pay $74k for it.
Relative price of platinum to gold is irrelevant. It is the tradition in the watch market for platinum models to be the most expensive and exclusive. Look at the platona vs a gold Daytona etc.
@@DangerousKittenFangsGold is more valuable per gram than Platinum. Platinum, however, is denser. In objects of the same volume, there will be more Platinum than Gold. Platinum is also more difficult to work with so there’s a labor premium to consider as well.
😂😂😂 Love your rant. I kinda like that watch. I don't know if I $ 74,000 like it. (By the way I saw a genuine vintage gold Junghans for €63 the other day, talk about a steal). But judging from the photos I think that this watch is aimed as a ladies watch.
Agree w/ many points made, just one thing I gotta point out-Piaget would be last brand I’d pick to use such poor promo images, it looks like bad AI with a polo dropped in.
If they made a stainless w/ white gold accents for 10g, and the full gold for 20, they could actually sell some watches and get young people into the brand, Blew it big time
I really like the round version, the square version, really? However, you are right about their lack of a diverse watch portfolio, I keep seeing a new altiplano each year, it does get boring and last year was a new line of the polo on rubber strap. By the way, the polo is my dream watch to replace the Blue Patek Beta 21. May be Piaget focuses more on jewelery, I do not know what their numbers are. Also, the fact the new Polo 79 looks boring, it means that in person, it will be awesome soon as you get close to the finishing.
I’m surprised at this take from a polo fan. This seems like he may have crafted an entire argument around the fact that he prefers the square case. The fact he opens up with that suggests what the real issue is. I like the round one better but i was never going to own either anyway. And any price point they had was going to be massively higher than their vintage pieces. They aren’t unique to this phenomena either. He’s forgotten more than I’ll probably ever know about watches, especially vintage. But this release doesn’t bother me one bit, and I’d love to own the green Polo perpetual calendar someday.
Modern reissue for 5 times the price of a second hand one, in a market who was driven by "watch investors" for a brand no one wanted to "invest", and 1 year and a half after the hype of the market... Is the Piaget marketing team a group of 10 people sharing 9 brain cells?
Could not agree more here! Not only is the price insane. The movement uses a regulation adjustment system that most brands replace with a better system. ETAchron on a fucking 70k watch?! Even fucking IWC replaced that on their ETA sourced movements.
When I saw this watch a few weeks ago, I thought of the same thing - why round first. I am sure the square will follow sooner or later but don't you kinda wonna come out with the bang right off the gate? Otherwise, I wouldn't be so harsh on the watch. Pricing, no comment.
The originals round interested me but even the biggest is 33 ml, v small and I think that includes the crown. Most are listed as 27mm......Anyway I bet you can grey one in a coupla years for 40/50.......
I love Piaget as a brand, I adore vintage Piaget, especially the 1970s models before the great hype phase of the brand, I recently bought one myself. And still I would never even consider paying more than about 5000 euros for a Piaget, and I don't see how they are relevant as a brand today, except for their extremely rarefied Altiplano haute horlogerie experiments.
Yes! Think of the round Piaget as a tease and build-up to the release of the superior, square version. Issuing both with the alternative of having automatic mechanical movements instead of quartz would grab more interest.
I suggest you stop calling the polo an aquanaut ripoff … you sound like an armature when you say that. I don’t own it, but maybe some of your listeners do. Why by so nasty about it.
Ugliest watch I've ever seen. This is an unnecessary, horrible nod to vintage opulence and sheer gaudiness. Piaget is done and thank God we are over with this Polo period.
