Billy Joel is a G.O.A.T ! He is a storyteller and philosopher of life expressed through his amazing music and lyrics. I have seen him in concert four times and was blown away everytime. He is incomparable!
Now you know just who the "Piano Man" is. This song is a historical account of nearly a decade of his life before "Just The Way You Are" made him a radio hit maker. The rest as they say is history, Classic Rock History.
Some of the instruments are quite subtle, but the song actually includes piano, harmonica, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, accordion, mandolin, and drums!
Billy started playing in bands when he was 14, but found himself on the bad end of a record contract in the early seventies and disappeared from the music scene by playing in a piano bar in LA for 6 months under the name Bill Martin, which is his middle name. In the mean time Columbia records came calling, got him out of the bad record deal and the rest is history
That's how he started out, playing piano in a bar where he got to know all the regulars. This was his first hit. I heard it on AM (amplitude moderation) radio in 1973. I was 13 years old. Been a fan ever since!
Just a word about old school lingo. There is a line where he says, "...as the businessmen slowly get stoned." Back in the day they used the word "stoned" for being drunk as well as being high on weed. So in this case, he means "as the businessmen slowly get drunk". Also, (you may know this one) money was often referred to as "bread". So people are putting tips in his jar.
JM, you've spent some time getting to know why we suggested you do this man's music. I know there are several others coming soon, and Billy is becoming one of your favorite artist. My own B.J. Best has 66 songs....
"THAT WAS UNBELIEVABLE!!!" ... That's what you said the first time you watched the Magnificent Classic Rock Legendary Voice.. You can believe this song is just as impressive.... Joe Cocker - Feels Like Forever (LIVE in Dortmund) HD
"Piano Man" It's nine o'clock on a Saturday The regular crowd shuffles in There's an old man sittin' next to me Makin' love to his tonic and gin He says, "Son can you play me a memory? I'm not really sure how it goes But it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete When I wore a younger man's clothes" La, la-la, di-di-da La-la di-di-da da-dum Sing us a song, you're the piano man Sing us a song tonight Well, we're all in the mood for a melody And you've got us feelin' alright Now John at the bar is a friend of mine He gets me my drinks for free And he's quick with a joke, or to light up your smoke But there's some place that he'd rather be He says, "Bill, I believe this is killing me" As a smile ran away from his face "Well, I'm sure that I could be a movie star If I could get out of this place" Oh, la, la-la, di-di-da La-la di-di-da da-dum Now Paul is a real estate novelist Who never had time for a wife And he's talkin' with Davy, who's still in the navy And probably will be for life And the waitress is practicing politics As the businessmen slowly get stoned Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness But it's better than drinkin' alone Sing us the song, you're the piano man Sing us a song tonight Well, we're all in the mood for a melody And you've got us feelin' alright It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday And the manager gives me a smile 'Cause he knows that it's me they've been comin' to see To forget about life for a while And the piano, it sounds like a carnival And the microphone smells like a beer And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar And say man what are you doin' here? Oh, la, la-la, di-di-da La-la di-di-da da-dum Sing us the song, you're the piano man Sing us a song tonight Well, we're all in the mood for a melody And you've got us feelin' alright. WE all can relate
Really enjoyed your reaction! Love this song & artist! Some of my favorite Billy Joel songs are, "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant", "New York State of Mind", & "We Didn't Start The Fire" ❤️🔥 New sub from TN :-)
Trivia TIDBIT, Paul the Real Estate Novelist was played by Tommy Lee Jones before he became famous, back in the mid 70s. A Real Estate Novelist who never had time for a wife chatting at the bar with a "Navy for Lifer" was a coy way of painting a picture they were gay back in the day.
THE DEFINITION OF LOVE: "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. 6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. 11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement." Romans 5:1-11. Also John 3:16-17
