You probably can, not at the same speed. Everybody can do everything is all about doing it. Do back flips for a year, do piano for a year, do jiu jitsu for a year..

Sounds great by just using the A or B rootless voicings and tritone sub for the dominant 7th. after minor 7th. b5.

Thanks for amazing lesson, Tony! I really like how you change the melody on 10:46, could you elaborate how you come up with that, it sounds very nice but I’m not able to come up with such a smooth melodic phrase myself. What’s logic behind it melodically and rhythmically? Thanks!

That comes from experience. Lots of practice. There isnt any thought at this point, it just happens. But basically it does follow the scales of d minor melodic ascending and e flat lydian dominant

I always assumed the standard 6th degree in minor was a flat 6. Is the flat in the key signature mostly just for the right hand/melody usually? But the left hand/chords treat the home key as Dorian by default?

Minor keys have many quirks, they are definitely not as straightforward as major keys. I'll try to answer your question in a future video but the short answer is... the 6 and the 7 can be flat or not. Depends on what 'sounds right'

I have a question? What is your approach on improvising on altered notes/chords? (b9, #9, #11, etc.) What do you think exactly in terms of scales or best riffs that come across your mind? That is what throws me off during my solos.I see a Eb7#11 and I have to think more on what scale to use.

I love the fly!! When I see an altered tension like the ones you mention, I usually go to the altered scale ( a tough one to learn) or the appropriate diminished scale. However, The #11 usually wants the lydian dominant scale. For Eb7#11 try lyd.dom: Eb F G A Bb C Db Eb. You might know that scale as Bb minor melodic ascending. Thanks for the tips! Yeah, a video on b9, #11, b13 and what scales to use would be invaluable. I come from a classical school and we use different names ( octatonic scale is the same as diminished scale in jazz). I have to adapt to it ...

About that minor 6 maj 7 chord, wouldn't that sound off if you're playing with a guitarist whos doing a regular Dm9?

21 21 yes it would sound wrong. Guitar and piano need to communicate or accidents abound.

Awesome tutorial, Tony, thank you so much for posting it! I've been learning from it for a couple of months and have a lot of the song down. I'm just curious - are you using the sustain pedal at for in this song? It doesn't sound like it. If so in which parts and how?

What do you mean by box voicings? Are you talking about the seventh chord inversions?

No, I'm talking about a chord like F,A,B,E (from bottom to top) that can function as a 7th chord

box 2 is the inversion of box 1 BEFA for example

It means this shape : F A C# E. This can be used as a Dmin-maj7 chord or a G7#11. The video I linked to explains the box voicings. /they are mostly rootless voicings
