As a guitarist, I would vote for piano. It's a much better basis for the wider musical world, music theory etc
@MelodyMaker
@MelodyMaker 4 года назад
I agree. As an example....when you've mastered piano chords, you can translate the underlying triads into your thinking while playing guitar. You're not really thinking notes when forming open chords or barre chords on the guitar having not studied piano. Upon learning fret board notes, one is now equipped to solo more easily.

Been playing guitar for like two years now, would it still be worth it to learn the piano? Still don’t really understand much about music theory and soloing i haven’t succeeded at yet. How long would it take to learn piano and use that knowledge on guitar?
@MelodyMaker
@MelodyMaker 4 года назад
@@shillian4770 It depends on what you want Colton. If you're limited by time, I would not recommend playing piano. You want to focus on your guitar while supplementing your guitar practice with learning music theory. The ads you see on youtube claiming that you can't learn guitar via youtube videos are nonsense. There are quality channels on youtube. (examples: Stichmethod Guitar / Brian Kelly). Naturally, you'll get premium content if you pay for it. Aspiring players quit because they think they'll be able to "play be ear" thinking they can short cut knowledge. You want to learn something new often and regularly to avoid "the rut".

I'm a guitar player, and have played it exclusively for decades now. I started on piano though, and in my opinion that is the best for learning music theory. When playing guitar and thinking through music I generally think in terms of patterns on the fretboard, but often fall back to thinking about it on a keyboard. It has been a huge help to me to have that early piano training, and vocal (both church choir and what used to be taught in our public schools) as well.

Learned a bit of piano as a child and it still influences how I think about music and how I visualize it. I've been taking guitar lessons for a little over a year now and have made super fast progress because of the knowledge I have from piano. Also bought a keyboard because I still felt the urge to hit the keys every now and again. And now I practice both. Usually start with the guitar and then sit at my keyboard and often play the same songs on it. That is actually when I feel like I'm learning the most, when I can really feel my understanding of music expanding. Both skills sort of feed each other and it's amazing.

I play piano, drums, and guitar (and when I say play I mean I have been learning them) and they are all fun. Drums make you feel cool, piano makes you feel classy, and guitar makes your fingers hurt while also feeling cool. My favorite is most likely piano but I but I enjoy them all, at some point in time I'd like to write my own song (I can also sing) including the instrument pieces but I digress. Both piano and guitar are cool and it's up to the person which they want to play.

I'm a guitar player mostly, but I found it easy to learn music theory in piano. You can see every unique notes from top to bottom in a linear fashion and how it relates to one another. It's just easy. In Guitar there are redundant notes and weird arrangement that only make sense so that your finger can fit and be able to play chords.. That's why there are many guitar players that only know chords and play by ear and still be successful and not knowing much music theory.
@EagleHunt

Honestly, I think piano is more applicable to other instruments but it's WAY easier to be proficient/presentable to others on guitar. I tried learning piano for years and didn't click. I picked up guitar and was presentable within a couple months. I think guitar is more rewarding because of how fast you see results. In my opinion it's easier to be "decent" on guitar than piano. But either way both seem like good instruments to learn.
@Carebear_Pooh
@Carebear_Pooh 2 года назад
I feel like there are many general concepts that piano really helped me to train and understand. For example, being able to play different parts with both hands at the same time while controlling pedals with my feet, controlling dynamics individually per hand (so you can make the melody louder), understanding and reading music and how chords work, being able to read in different keys. It's just a general sense of flexibility and independence that is really good to get used to without having to think about actually getting a clean sound out of your instrument. With that said though, passion absolutely goes first. If you are in love with the sound of a certain instrument, then stop wasting your time looking at piano and learn that instrument (unless it's piano). On the other hand, if you're not completely sure what instrument to pick, but you do want to get into music, learn the piano. You won't regret it, because you'll be building general musicianship alongside your skills as a pianist.

he is really right about piano being a great place to start. You could learn music theory way easier and it’s just a stepping stone. In my opinion, it is easier to start than guitar as anyone could press a key on the piano. Personally, I’ve played piano since I was 4 and only started guitar when I was 12. I could understand more of the chords and things on guitar due to what I’ve learned from playing piano.

If you think piano vs guitar then pick piano. It’s a much better instrument. It’s got great potential if you are serious about music. You will learn music theory much easier . You can play anime openings , music form your favorite movies , classics , pop songs etc. if you want to sing you can play piano and sing. You can play scales for yourself to learn to sing. It’s a much better overall instrument . Then you can get a guitar and I promise you : anyone can learn to play basic guitar in 3 months. You basically just play six chords and sing. However, if you’re interested in metal and rock then just get yourself a guitar. But even then you will need lots of music theory if you want to play with someone else , then you will do some research on music theory and it will eventually bring you back to piano lol. I’m not a good guitar player, but Ive been playing guitar for 12 years , two years in a band as a teen. Now I’m learning piano and I wish I started with piano. Good luck.

Oooooof. Lol. I have to admit that I'm biased in favor of guitar. And even though I definitely give piano the utmost respect as a boss ass instrument and a very good tool to learn music theory on (it literally lays music out in front of you)......... it's hard for me to cosign that it's a *much* better instrument than the guitar. Personally, I think that the guitar and the piano are neck and neck with regards to which is better; each has "powers" and advantages the other doesn't have. Even if you could make the argument that the piano is better (which I'm not quite sold on....yet), the race between the two would at least be a *close* one. 😂 I do respect your view, and I know there's a lot backing it. It's just hard for me to cosign that the piano is better hands down. The guitar is packing heat in its own right (muted or percussive strumming, soloing, the ability to go acoustic or electric, arguably a better "cool factor," etc.). And it's not impossible to learn theory on guitar, even with its obstacles. Plus the "simplicity" of guitar gives it some advantages also. If piano wins the race, the race is at least gonna be close between em imo.

I play multiple instruments. Guitar was my first polyphonic one. I just clicked with it instantly ... maybe because I'm inclined to think sideways? There's a lot to be said for piano, though, and it's the way I'd lean for a beginner who wants to learn an instrument but doesn't already have a strong preference as to which one. Guitar and piano are both crazy versatile and have manageable learning curves; guitar has the edge in portability, although electronic keyboards may have made that a moot point. Hell, it's a wash. Either one of them can play basically any genre of music you want.
@jtelevenoyd1571
@jtelevenoyd1571 4 года назад
Another argument in favor of piano occurs to me: there's a thunderin' herd of guitar players. Want to stand out? Pick an instrument that everybody and his dog don't already play. Supporting remark: although I'm a multi-instrumentalist, my primary is violin, and if I were putting together a band I'd look for a drummer/percussionist, a piano/keyboard player, and a bassist, in that order. Then I could worry about sorting out the three or four dozen guitar players who'd wandered up in the meantime. FWIW, IMHO, YMMV, etc.

Guitars are cheaper and smaller, and pianos are expensive and big. Of course there are electric keyboards that are nice and small and cheaper as well. I personally think the guitar sounds better than the piano, its a more rustic, full tone. That being said the piano does sound amazing, and they sound amazing together. Piano is easier to get into and its not as painful as guitar. It really comes down to personal preference over anything. I prefer guitar but I am glad I learned piano as well. But definitely just learn what you wanna learn.

Chords, relationships with chords and keys , modes, bass and treble clefs,so much more. I learnt theory for two years before playing trombone, one note a a time- too little. Then took up guitar and things began to meld together. Six string chords, notes such as 6ths. etc. No- playing the piano leads to so much more.

The piano is a great instrument to play and unlike a guitar every key you press down is in tune not like a guitar were if you dont fret it right you have duff note . Just on lock down here in the uk so music is the only thing thats keeping me sane and out of my wifes way .The piano shes fine with ,guitar just about but what drives here mad is when i start playing the ukulele .Think everybody should own and play one .

The major stuff to learn on an electric is more all the stuff surrounding it that don't really have much to do w/ playing it like amps, pickups, tone controls etc. but that is more of a personal thing than something you should feel you have to learn.

This video was funny but true. So as a working pianist and have grown up in a musician’s household and having hung around just musicians having experience with all instruments this is the case. I loved what one person said on youtube. Guitar players and drummers attract the chicks but the pianists well,,,,, we get more the work. I love how you stated that the guitar is an intimate instrument because it is. Not only does a jazz or classical guitar sound sexy but you can hold it close to you. With a piano, it is not really a romantic and sexy instrument. Now the sounds you get out of it can bee romantic but the instrument is like for example cat’s and dogs. The dog wants to bee close to you every second and will nuzzle you. Man’s best friend so as they say right??? Well, the piano is like a cat. You can’t bee to close to it but then if you are to far then it is not comfortable and you can’t reach the pedals. It is very demanding and it takes up your day. We pianists are set to a high standard and our requirements are much much higher. Our instrument is very very demanding compared to a guitar. You can hold a guitar in your arms all night long but a piano you can’t hold it. You can approach it but then if you are to close it doesn’t feel right. So with a piano it basically wants you but then it doesn’t. It is like Ithe piano is saying this. “I love you but don’t bee so close to me!!” It is like a cheating girlfriend. Yea. You go out on a date and the girl can say she loves you but then she will go out with someone else. Well, now that is crazy right??? Now the guitar is like the woman that will stay with you no matter what. She is actually strapped to you and doesn’t want to leave you. The piano is more serious as far as work goes. It basically is saying. “Yea. I am here to sever you lets go to work.” “Now, we are done working now get away from me.” Kind of funny examples but this is what the piano is like. Now the guitar is like this. It is saying if it could talk “hold me close and don’t let me go.” This is if a piano and guitar could talk. The way that they are approached. Really the guitar if it could speak and if the piano could speak. Or how about this. The guitar is a dependent instrument. It is strapped on to you. It depends on you to hold it and baby it. The piano is like the independent one. You can bee close to it but then again you can’t bee to close to it. The piano is one of those instruments that says... “I am hear to work!!! Play me!!!” Then after playing it it is like saying “get out of here and leave me alone!!!!!” So the mannerisms of the guitar versus piano is much nicer with the guitar. The other thing with the guitar is that it is more of a loving instrument if you look at it from an emotional point. It wants to bee picked up and held. The piano on the other hand is kind of a jerk!!! It sits their all big and beefy and it has its player approach it but then when you go to sit behind it you can’t bee to close. Then you can’t bee to far. It is like it doesn’t know what it wants. Lol!!!!!!!! But that is why it takes a certain person to play it just like a guitar. Maybe that is why it shows what instrument you play. It reflects on you. Now from the players prospective. Fun examples here. For a guitar player the player is effectionate and loving. Where as the pianists are confident and bossy. Just examples... piano players are authorities as they go about their day today tasks. Where as i think the guitar players are more loving and passion ant.

Yamaha makes some great 88 key fully weighted hammer action velocity sensitive digital grand pianos.. other brands make some solid competing hardware as well. But you can get a 61-key velocity sensitive midi keyboard with full size keys to learn on for around $100.

Keyboard, without a doubt, should be everyone’s introduction to Music Theory. We humans process information mostly on a Visual basis, so keyboard is a strictly linear Left-To-Right (and literally, a Black-And-White) instrument. With Guitar, there are dot vs. block inlays, ups & downs on the neck, equidistant scales that get thrown off by the G to B string interval, hammers & pulls, bends, tap techniques, hybrid picking, vibratos- and don’t even get me started on truss rod & bridge saddle adjustments! If you ask me, Guitar is a beginner Music Theorist’s worst nightmare. Piano/ Keyboard lessons are the only true path toward Music Theoretical Glory! This is Dr. Frazier Crane. Goodnight.

Me who was born to a poor family, guitar is way more accessible than piano. Yamaha guitar isn't as expensive than any piano or keyboard. So I started playing guitar since highschool. I do look cool with the guitar, but when I listen to old school jazz, it makes me wanna learn piano so bad. Like it's so sweet-sounding.

Piano: pro: literally the black and white of Ionia con: hard to transpose the obvious black and white of C to other keys Guitar: pro: portable repertoire con: EVERYTHING ELSE actually. Bends are human? Then why are they so damB hard to do. They are truly equal opposites and I recommend that everyone frequents both for maximum brain-splitting victory.

I forgot one thing. Now a digital piano is even a different beast. It is the I can do everything instrument. It is like a selfish person. A digital piano is like if it had character it would say. “I don’t need you get out of here!!!!!! I can do everything!!!!!!! Forget the musicians!!!!!! Leave it to me!!!!!” This is the attitude if the digital piano had character as a person. It is actually a very helpful piano buy the way but on one hand and yes. I am talking about my instruments as a pianist lol!!!!! But yea. Digital pianos are actually the self centered instrument because they can do it all and they are the I can do it all and I know it all kind of instrument. Digital pianos are egotistic actually. Digital pianos are the instrument that says to all musicians “get out of the way!!!!! I don’t need any of you, because i can do everything!!!!” Lol!!!!!!!!!!

@@NeonGreenSpidey I would look at the Yamah digital pianos or even Rolland. It also depends on your price as well and what you can afford. Also Koaii has good ones for beginners as well but i would go with Yamaha and or Rolland. Yamaha though brings your piano to life with the traditional real sound of the grand piano. The other brands sound more synthesized.

I am looking for an instrument to play that is easy to practice with sitting at my desk. My regular electric guitar does not fit in my lap with the arms in this chair in the way, and I have a Yamaha 88 key digital grand piano that's too big to sit on top putting me in a situation where I get to practice neither. I am considering a 61-key velocity sensitive midi controller, and also an Anygig travel guitar. I just cannot decide which. It'll probably be both before long.

Remove the arms! I’ve had many computer chairs and when I get them home I put them together with out the arms. As a guitar player I joke about it with friends. The new trend of “tell me something with out telling me” I’d show my office chair without arms. I’d think a lot of guitar plays would get it.
