Piano without looking

Playing wind, brass or bowed string instruments involves not looking. It’s the ears that do the work to correct and then the fingers learn their positions.
Playing piano does involve a little bit of looking, where there are large jumps, but even these can be judged. The eyes can play tricks though, and sometimes distances on the piano can be overshot.
Here is a method of playing right hand chords, with the fingers moving minimal distances. The same goes for bass notes in the left hand.

One thing I tried to get my piano students to do more than anything was to not look at their hands. I was never taught this and at one point I had a concert pianist giving me lessons and even he didn't realise that was THE thing I couldn't do. You will NEVER improve your sight-reading on piano unless you practise this. It took me years to figure this out and the thing that did it for me in the end, was trying to visualise the keyboard much in the same way that you're doing here, but not only using muscle memory but as I said visualising looking at your hands, creating the mental picture of what we're looking at here.

Great stuff. I'm going to recommend this to my mom, who learned a bit of piano as a child, and is now reconnecting with it later in life.

Dan… a favor please. I’ve watched so many of your videos, now trying to review one I can’t locate. The video where you outlined on paper the idea of finding chords by three. That made so much sense. Could you post a link please if you recall what I’m talking about? Thanks.

I do not have to look at the keyboard constantly, but remember how far to stretch my fingers. It is just muscle memory, like drawing circles, or eights.

Is the central hand position and shape intended to remain the same for all keys? As the smallest movements from there are suggested as practice to reduce reliance on sight I think the answer is likely to be yes, at least until confidence in touch grows.

Yes kind of. It’s just the concept of making everything reachable…
