I just found this site when I searched and found it very inspiring! I have only been learning for a year and still find reading whilst playing difficult. I will give your techniques a go but still find it a bit scary! so I will start by covering just small areas at a time. I will let you know if I make any progress, but I'm 72 years old so don't "hold your breath!"

This is the absolute BEST advice I have ever been given about improving on the piano. I can't believe the difference it makes to close your eyes - your brain has to engage to figure out where you are going. Life changing!!! Seriously!!! Why have I not thought of this before? Thank you!!!

I dissagree with one thing. It's the use of sleep masks, if you have one handy try it, I had one from a travel kit and been using it for the last few days and it really works, I got no darkened room but I have a sleep mask and it does eliminate that easy glance to get re-oriented when you lose your bearings. I found it was a knee jerk response to take a look down when I lost my bearings. Found it impossible to make the break. With the mask on it became very simple to feel for the place on the kayboard. Someone called those anchor notes, like C and F if you hit the thumb or pinky on the edege of the ebony key or feel for the group of 3 keys or the gap between the Eb and Gb, Bb and Db. The mask helped me swich over to feeling for those and also using my ears. It is like a switch from eyes and ears to touch and ears but the mask forced me to make the switch over much simpler. There are some other tricks to get the bigger jumps but that will come from the consequence of not being able to see where my fingers must go.

Good job! You can use one of those eye masks any time during the day. By the way, Willie, there is another reason for film/game music composers. They can compose while watching the scenes!

I hope it's not too late for me... I always look at my left hand because of those big jumps there and almost always completely memorize the sheet music because i cannot look at it... will try to focus on not looking at my hands from now on.

what happen when you play stride? (bass & chord got more than 2 octave interval) I found very difficult to hit right bass note without peek. especially when my right hand improvising at high notes area. My hands has very long distance between. (If I peek, my head will keep swing all the time, which is makes my head very unconfortable)

Thanks Willie for the mini lesson. Some of what you say also applies to sightreading music far as feeling the keys. Naturally you wouldnt play in the dark sightreading unless I have the song memorized. I have always wondered how Stevie Wonder first knows which is middle C is on the keyboard when he first sits down? Anyway, great tips on not looking at the keys, DaveT Jazzedge member

You could also mention, for pop playing, if you are also singing, it's way too distracting to not be facing the audience. So all the well known pianist/singers are always facing the audience. But like classical playing, for really large leaps you can glance down for a sec, but for the most part, no looking down at all!

I had to learn my scales and arpeggios blind out of necessity (no, I'm not blind). It's just that I couldn't play certain arpeggios (G minor diminished 7, For example) while looking because I felt my hands looked ugly while playing it, and it affected my performance. As I'm learning a piece, I tend to try adding blindness to the mix (I'm not the best sight-reader out there, and looking down doesn't help).

Why can't piano teachers get on the same page when it comes to fingerings for arpeggios, triads and 7th chords? One teacher or piano book will say 1-3-5 for right hand triads, while another says 1-2-4. For major 7th chords, one says 5-4-2-1 in the left hand, while another says 5-3-2-1. If two teachers agree that right hand major 7th chords should be played 1-2-4-5, wouldn't it make sense to learn 1-2-4 for the triad rather than 1-3-5 since you can just add the 7th without shifting other fingers from 1-3-5 to 1-2-4? My piano book fingerings for Ebdim7 (which is close to what you played, except for the 7th), for two octaves, is 4-3-2-1 4-3-2-1-4 from bottom to top in the left hand. At 11:50, you kept it simple by starting with the pinky, then 5-4-3-2-1 and crossing over with 4.

great lesson. that was funny at 15:17 maybe you could use that kind of humor to point out mistakes, bad habits and foolish things that people do while learning or playing. That makes discussed items in lessons even more memorable. I had two very funny teachers, math and French, and there are things that they taught that I could never forget because they made me and my classmates laugh. But again this is just my suggestion. you are an excellent teacher regardless.

If you feel the two Black keys you will know where c d and e is if you feel the three you will know where f g A and b are o if you do this on the whole piano slowly by slowly your ears will get trained and also you will have a more better of the geography of the piano.
