I came to playing mandolin as a classically trained violinist. The two finger grip just feels more natural to me as it keeps roughly the same hand shape to how I hold a violin bow.
After playing guitar for 45 years I had an experience where I came back from a vacation (so hadn't played at all for 10 days) and was having bad pain in my pointer finger. My grip had changed over the years to a position where I was gripping the pick on the very end of that finger instead of keeping the last knuckle bent and I had basically worn out that joint by putting sideways pressure on it. The break in playing brought this out and I had relearn the grip in a week since I had to play in a Christmas concert. Six months later I'm finally back to normal but now when I go on vacation I will always bring something to play...
Personally I use a triangle dunlop primetone 1.4mm, same thickness as a blue chip ct-55 but I also like it in 1.5 as well which is what he's using! Hope that helps
which of your picks do you find you reach for the most often - brand shape and thickness? everyone I know loves their Blue Chip Picks, I can not afford them and not sure what is a good substitute?
