Size of card depends also on the use, I have my camera on for hours at a time, wanting to make sure I capture the moment that big fish hammers my line. So because of that I need the largest possible card I can use. I don't like to be changing cards while fishing. Thanks for the video, very informative!

This video really helped me. I kept getting so error messages on my GoPro. I couldn’t figure it out but now that I saw this video I looked on my card and I had a 4 card. I hade a hero 7 and I was trying to use the 4 card. Thanks man.

Thanks everso for this super informative video. I've just bought my first GoPro a hero 5 and I hadn't a clue. I've done some research and am still learning really useful stuff from guys like you. Wished I'd watched this video before making my purchase of the SD card as the girl in the shop sold me an SD card that wasn't a micro card. I was was totally reliant on her knowing what I needed. I only looked on the back of the box which told me that I needed a micro not a standard card when I got home and now I have to go back to the store to exchange it. Hey, the pitfalls of being new to any sort of technology. What a plonker I am xx

So I got a really good deal on a canvas go 128gb v30 card.. (about half price) for my hero 5 black. I haven't used it yet but with you recommending a class 10 I certainly hope the higher speeds only work "better" and don't gunk up the camera. Thanks for the vid

Nicely explained. On a side note, for those of us who do use larger cards, its nice to see the prices coming down. You can pick up brand name 128gb cards for under $40 and Pro 128 gb cards under $60. I remember when they ran $120 each.

But now, I see people online talking about extreme or extreme pro, and I'm wondering what the differences are. I hope ultra works just fine for my new gopro.

I would only use u3 v30 for anything 1080p 60fps and over. Class 10 u1 didn't work for me with 1080p 60, but worked at 30fps.

Nice video. Two thumbs up! Just a note that it should be MB/s not mbps. Since most manufacturers list mbps write speed, it would have helped to have a column for that instead of kbps. In the case of 4K, you then need about 82.5mbps cards. And unfortunately manufacturers are not consistent. Samsung's cards are U3, but then only have 60mbps write speeds on some cards.

Eh, I only buy 128 GB and I unload daily but I keep it on for backup. When it is full I wipe it. It is just a little added security. When GoPro allows larger cards I'll keep upgrading my cards.

Have just bought a memory card Samsung Evo select 128 gb after many hours of searching for the right one for me and all this with the classes are complicated . I received the order confirmation just today and then this video go up. Thank you for the video but really unfortunately that I I did not wait and now I would go with lexar. Great content.

You definitely will not be sad with that card. The one thing we did get into is the speed you can read from the card. This is really important for off loading footage. Your new Samsung Evo select 128 gb has great read speeds making getting footage off the card easy.

Dhivakaran Moodley it worked, I have used it with my GoPro hero 6. I shoot normaly in 1080 Because my computer is to old to tender out 4K fottage. But that work well to. I can record 4k and show it on the memory card!

Great info, never realized about the 3 different speed classifications. Does seem rather stupid to create a new class when the original could be just extended. Regularly use SanDisk 32GB (Class 10) & recently acquired a 64GB card (also Class 10).

This is very helpful. I mainly use my GoPro while cycling, the rides are typically two hours and change, been shooting on a 2018 model with a class 10 64GB Sandisk at 1080p 60fps, and that gives me over four hours of video time. So if I hang onto a day’s video for some reason with that setup, there’s no rush to offload or erase it to make room. BUT, I just ordered a Hero 6 and plan to shoot at 4K, so I imagine just to cover two hour rides I’m going to need a 128GB card. That should be a decent cushion I think. GoPro recommends the Sandisk Extreme card, but I don’t get the difference, so I went with one step down on the first camera. In retrospect, the price difference isn’t significant enough to not buy the Extreme, but I didn’t have any problems with the standard Class 10 card.

just got home and checked again the sc card I just purchased, the card I bought is sandisk extreme 64 but it also says Microsd XC1 and V30 and letter A2 , not sure what those things mean? thanks

so I have the GoPro Hero 5 Black and got a Sandisk Extreme 64gb, U3, V30, A1 card with Read speeds up to 100mb/s and write speeds up to 60mb/s. Not sure how much 4k I'll be shooting in since i dont really have a computer to back it up, but was just wondering if this card will be fine or if the Extreme Plus or Extreme Pro is worth the extra $20-$40 Thanks in advance.

Thank you for helping us decode SD cards in a clear manner. Another thing you could discuss is the need to use SD cards as backup storage media. I have a lot of cards stored from previous shooting trips because I don't trust my computer or video editing program for holding irreplaceable footage. In my situations I find 16 GB cards to be appropriate as they are cheap enough ($5-6) to shoot an hour of video and file after off-loading.

Micro SD cards are a pretty volatile form of long term storage. They tend to degrade and fail. I'd recommend getting a couple hard drives and making copies onto them. They are cheap and less likely to fail in storage for long periods of time.

@@malcolmmarzo2461 I'm not an expert but I personally have many micro SD cards that have failed and I have heard that flash storage is unreliable. But more than anything, it's expensive and unnecessary. You can get a 1tb hard drive for the same price as a 128gb micro SD card. Just get multiple hard drives for redundancy and make copies, then store those drives in different places. That's the best data solution.

@@randywild6900 Lately I've had several SanDisk micro SD cards fail. Frustrating because they had material done from expensive light plane flights. Maybe SanDisk is another formerly top brand that is no longer reliable. Curiously, my Walmart cards have never failed.

Do UHS-II cards work in the Hero 6? Adata V90 UHS-II 128GB and 256GB versions now available. I have a Samsung 256GB EVO+ U3 card and it causes lock-up and split screen issues in my Hero 6 even though it works OK sometimes for a while. I record at 4K60. I currently use a Sandisk Extreme 128GB V30 U3 card but want 256GB capacity for 4K60.
