Hi Karen, I know it goes against your good nature to 'name and shame' the cowboy outfit but doing so could actually save someone else's life. I'm a few miles away from you (Scotland to be precise) but I'm an experienced business compliance and quality auditor. The rules concerning gas in NZ are not that different from here in the UK and a safety certificate "should not" have been issued when there were clear faults in the appliances. As for the suggestion you ignore the smell of gas, well that's just 'criminal. Never mind pulling their ad's from magazines, they need to be struck off the approved fitters register and beaten with big sticks. ANYONE who endangers you is my enemy for life. As for the ants... well they're protein and probably had better personalities than the gas fitters. Stay safe :-)

Really sorry about your bad experience with the dodgy gas company. It always amazes me that when you get people who are competent, know what they are doing, how simple it all is apparently. Still, it seems you have learnt a lot and passed on that to your viewers. Good for you. Living in the UK and having New Zealand and Australian friends, I am envious that the lockdown for you is lifted. Personally, I feel that NZ had a for better approach to the siuation than the UK. Keep up the great work on youtube and enjoy your travelling.

OMG. Gas leaking on one side of the kitchen and a frayed electrical wire in the heater on the other... that combo doesn’t bear thinking about. So glad you got that fixed.

That company sounded horrendous, especially with the advice about don't worry if can smell gas. So glad you found someone decent to do the work.

I am very happy that RVMega has gotten you all fixed up, Rod sounds like a very professional individual, As for the dodgy individual before your final repair, That person will get taken care of in the end. he will run a cross the wrong person one day and I am sure it will get very ugly for his past actions. Hey Karen! I think you are so courageous to journey on your own, it inspires and encourages me! Way to go! Glad to see you were able to get through the "Fridge" and "ants" episodes. An expression I've heard a lot in the past is " If it doesn't rain, it pours!" With regards to the "fridge" episode, I like to research the internet as I often get reviews of the company I want to use. I read a few of the good reviews, and then look at the bad ones to see what has been the problem. It's helped me balance out the pros and cons of using a given company. It is a challenge at times dealing with all the "situations" that can arise. Deep breathing helps me. "Stay calm and carry on!" Thanks for sharing your experiences!!! As others have said its time to name and shame them you went though all the legal channels and they didn't sort it. Now its time to give an honest review, Its not about getting revenge its to stop them before they kill someone

So glad you managed to find a reliable and trustworthy company to sort out your gas issue. Leaves a horrible feeling in your stomach when you realise someone has ripped you off. Happens all over the world unfortunately. In Britain we do have the consumer rights act and Citizens Advice who will help you through your rights should things go wrong. You’re a decent, honest person, K. There are rouges out there and you may unfortunately have just encountered some of them. Conversely, there are reputable companies out there too. It’s a lottery. Thankfully you got it all sorted out eventually. It’s challenging when you’re constantly on the move. Job done. Posting shared for our benefit. Lesson learned - get on with living your life. We, none of us enjoys being ripped off, but it happens. It's happened to me, and I didn't enjoy it any more than you did! I was proud to see how well you handled the situation, you worked through it like a pro! Especially for someone so young! I've been on this Earth for 56 years now, and I wish I could say it has happened to me only once, but that would be a lie. You have learned a valuable life lesson, and you came through with grace and dignity. Life goes on, remember that the next time. They are out there. Don't let it make you bitter. Most people are good, I believe.

We in the USA also have some dodgy RV repair companies. We don't have gas certificates however. You will slowly learn how to do more and more on your own as your Caravan life goes on. As for the ants! We have been there. Sparay anything that touches the ground around your RV. Tires, axles, hoses, power cords, jack stands, anything that touches the ground and your RV. Loved the vlog as I always do!!

You must name and shame those guys. They are dangerous. Think they would be in serious trouble in the UK. Stay safe.

Yes, many bad company, the last one did a good jobb, and now things works, hurray!

How frustrating for you. I know from personal experience how it feels to be taken advantage of and after it happening too many times I soon learned to not let it happen again. I recommend to you and other woman to practice something I find works for me. I practice what I'm expecting to happen when I step into a situation where I'm not familiar with the business or person. I make or write down point form notes of what I want to happen, what I'm going to pay at the most and what I won't let happen. I even write down a list of the top questions I need to ask for that situation. For example car is making a noise. I have to take it to a mechanic shop that I've never used before. I check the reviews online, I read at least 15 and not in date order incase they added reviews to over up/bury a bad review. (that happens). Call or website the BBB Better Business Bureau to find out if they are a member and if they have ever had a claim against them. Then I ask people that might know what the noise might be bad or good. Be somewhat aware and knowledgeable of what it could be because it's YOUR CAR AND YOUR MONEY. Ask on the phone when calling to book an appointment if they can email you a price quote for the service checkup and if possible a price quote for the repair using new or old parts. Insist on something in writing even get it when you arrive but before the work starts. Ask the important questions YOU NEED to know. Write those questions down and read them. Get those answers even when you're shy or awkward about asking. Don't be afraid to say no. Practice saying no. Don't be afraid to ask for a better price. Ask what the price includes. Anyway these are things you can do next time to better be prepared in situations that we don't feel knowledgeable in and we can get taken for granted in. I always tell people to go with your first gut instinct. If you are not jiving or liking the person you're dealing with, cut your losses and walk away or call somebody else. Learn to listen and trust your own instincts. It has served me very well in the last few years and it's the best thing I've learned about myself as a single woman. You should still go for getting your money back if that's what you believe should happen.

So glad, there was a happy end for you. Back in my time in NZ, my hiace had an issue with a fuse and the complete electric failed. That was struggling... but it all worked out fine at the end..., thankfully

Glad you reported these cowboys to NZCA and tried with the gas board. Its interesting how they use loop holes and introduce gas WOF that don't exist to bamboozle caravaners

Sad to hear you had to put up with all that but happy endings. What they did to you was upselling (doing more than was asked of them). Same as sending 2 plumbers out to fix a pipe join, Happened to me recently. Nowdays you almost have to draw up a work order and get them to sign it before work starts. I used to do that at work, perhaps we need to do it at home as well.

Diatomaceous earth is a great natural remedy for ants. Just sprinkle some around the perimeter and it will take care of the problem and it's completely natural and harmless to everything but bugs. You can even eat the stuff if you wanted 😁. But I wouldn't recommend it.

CGA don't pay unless you get "fit for purpose". Women often get taken advantage of. Stay focused on what you expect from the contractor and communicate that to them. You must know what you need first and research as much as possible.

I agree that they should be named, not sure about the law in NZ but here in the UK as long as what you say is true there is no fear of the dodgy company coming back at you.

Oh man, I feel you so much, that sense of being taken advantage of and railroaded into accepting shoddy work is awful. It;s hard to speak up in that situation. I once had a couple of guys out to clean and mend my gutters and I felt so uncomfortable the whole time they were there but didn;t feel safe enough to question what they were doing. When a piece of duct tape floated down in the rain from their "repair" a few days later I did manage to laugh wryly. Lesson learned. Glad you got sorted by a decent company in the end.

i always ask about call out charges and hidden charges before i let anyone near my home and i record the phone call......sadly for every good company out there you get a bad one.

Thanks for that. There are some buggers around Karen. We once had a service and said van had loads of damp over 30% then had another dealer check it to make sure. They said no damp they couldn't fine ANY high readings. They were approved by the relevant people, nothing came back when I complained.

I recon it would be cheaper to buy some insect surface spray and coat the stabilizers/tires and the caravan end of the hose's with it when you stay at van parks.

Hi K. I don’t know about NZ but here in UK we have Small Claims Courts that you can take the gas firm to to reclaim your bill and inconvenience up to a max of I think it’s £500. Also you cannot be charged for telling the truth. So as is said in the newspaper industry print it and be damned. But very good video.

Regardless of threats of getting in trouble saying the business who are not worthy. I'd say it as "public safety" comes first over any business reputation in my views and so too should it be in courts.

Ah no that’s terrible... gas isn’t something you play with... our caravan also smells a bit funny when I use the stove... will eventually get to it, just use an electric one for now... so pleased you managed to have a happy ending, but so annoying being ripped off...

Yup, that would have got me swearing too. At the end I noticed your fridge vent cover is a lot different than the ones we have in North America. Particularly, there is no drain hose sticking out of it. Where do you drain the condensation from your fridge?

Nightmare. Hate being ripped off by companies. With our caravan, I tend to do all my own maintenance, even gas. Where gas appliances have been found to be faulty, I have sent them off to a repairer but handled the removal and reinstallation myself. I’m the same with the electrics.

After all your fridge troubles it seems to be too easier a fix just stopping a small leak. When you first had problems with the fridge you didn't mention a smell. I don't mean to worry you, just thinking... Hope everything works ok now. The broken piezoelectric wire makes sense. Take care.

Where were these guys. We had something similar in Mangawhai. Fridge still not working. No leaks. Gas cert. $480.00. Totally ripped off. I may take it further now. Thanks K.

So glad it's now fixed. This sounds like a Fair Go story but I imagine that the pandemic situation would have got in the way and the problem company would use this for wriggle room. I understand why you can't give the name of that company. Maybe you could 'accidentally' take a photo/video if you ever drive past their depot!

Hi. If you have paid by card ring the card company and tell them not to pay up. Or get your money back and they should sort it out. Have a look.

Thank you for being so honest in your video's it shows the many pitfalls that can occur when caravanning. And while nothing will prevent rogue traders at least there was a happy ending. P.s. how much did you want to hook up and drive off with one of those Bailey's in the warehouse.

If these crooks are in the nzcva booklet in writing to the mag..cant you just explain your situation and which page and column said gasfitters are on with a warning without actually naming them

Simple put... they ripped off... Name shame... fair go... They have issued a gas cert that by your second guy finding gas leak to fridge means gas cert is quite invalid and poorly tested by the first three people.... this should also be reported to nz safety... A complete refund due to gass leaking being found .. reason fridge not working is a very serious issue... Follow this up for everyone else safety. Those three people got no right to issue a faulty gas cert

What a nightmare and a long one! Do you have a gas detector in your caravan, Karen? We call it a propane detector here in Cda. It beeps (really loudly) when it detects gas in the air.
